[12] p. Rare and attractive photo album titled "Cantieri del Tirreno Genova & Riva Trigoso" [i.e. Shipyards of the Tyrrhenian Sea Genoa and Riva Trigoso] including attractive six large-size silver gelatin photographs on six album leaves showing the process of the launchings and floatings of the Zafer destroyer in Tinaztepe class built under the 1929 programme in Fascist Italy, designed on the base of Italian destroyer Folgore, which were purchased while being built for the Italian Navy. Photos show the splendid process of the launching of this Turkish destroyer on the eve of WW II. The captions: 1.,2. Destroyer "Zafer" launching. 3. Destroyer "Zafer" floating and launching. 4. Destroyer "Zafer" completely finished in Genoa Harbour. 5. Destroyer "Zafer" floating after launching. 6. Destroyer "Zafer" completely finished in Genoa Harbour. The accompanying crowd is seen in some photos while the Turkish-flagged ship is being launched. The Tinaztepe and the Zafer were built at the Riva shipyard in Trigoso in addition to the Kocatepe. They were inspired directly by Freccia's plans, but their chimney ducts emerged separately. They could also anchor mines and had a less active career, apart from a few sorties in 1945 in a Mediterranean furrowed by Allied ships. They were scrapped in 1957.

20th-century photographic reproduction of the Shah Jahan Album.
1900. Contemporary gold- and blind-tooled burgundy buckram with the title and volume number lettered in gold on the front and spine a double fillet border on both boards blind-tooled turn-ins gold and burgundy floral end papers gilt edges. Folio. With 50 photographic reproductions in black and white mounted onto thick passe-partout leaves separated by thinner leaves onto which typed descriptions are mounted. 2 volumes. Remarkable photographic album beautifully reproducing the paintings from the Shah Jahan Album also known as the Kevorkian Album. The album compiled by the Mughal emperor Jahangir 1569-1627 and his son Shah Jahan 1592-1666 contains miniatures from the best painters of the Mughal era such as Govardhan Mansur Daulat Payag and Chitarman with calligraphic text by famous calligraphers such as Mir' Ali Haravi. The 50 exquisite photographs accurately reproduce the details of the original miniatures highlighting the iconographic and stylistic richness of Mughal art.Mughal albums also known as muraqqa usually included existing works in the patrons collection as well as works created specifically for the album such as paintings and drawings folios from preparatory pattern books and calligraphy specimens. They were not bought ready-made but compiled over a longer period of time by its owners. Emperor Jahangir commissioned the first folios for the Shah Jahan Album around 1620 and his son continued after his death. Shah Jahan's additions are stylistically different from Jahangir's with more portraits and illumination and the inclusion of calligraphy pages. After his death the muraqqa now with 39 miniatures passed onto his son Aurangzeb 1618-1707 who did not commission any more folios. The muraqqa left the royal library in the early 19th century and was likely acquired by an art dealer from Delhi who added 11 miniatures around 1820. These were made in the 19th century but imitated the 17th-century style of the others. In the 20th century the muraqqa was bought by the New York art dealer Hagop Kevorkian who sold 9 folios to the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington and the remaining 41 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where they still reside. The spectacular Shah Jahan Album is a collection of 50 single-page paintings which include intimate nature studies and portraits of the royal family and various dignitaries framed by a beautiful floral border. Each painting is faced by a single page of illuminated calligraphy made by renowned calligraphers. The photographs in the present work each mounted in a passepartout carefully reproduce the single-page paintings and three of the four calligraphic pages that open the collection. They are accompanied by a foreword and a short description of each painting which appear to be taken from an auction catalogue and were likely added later. A valuable testament to the interest in Mughal art in the 20th century this collection constitutes a seemingly unique iconographic resource as we have not been able to find another copy. There is no mention of a publisher or photographer but the quality of the prints suggests careful production intended for and commissioned by a scholar or collector specialising in Indian art. The present copy was part of the collection of Dr Ebadollah Bahari 1929-2018 noted historian of Persian art author of Bihzad master of Persian painting 1996 and benefactor of the Bahari Curatorship of Persian Collections at the Bodleian Libraries University of Oxford. The boards have been rubbed with minor loss of material on the back board of both volumes the joints are slightly weakened but the structural integrity of the bindings is still intact. Some of the mounted descriptions are lightly foxed. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover

[PHOTOGRAPHY - GREAT BRITAIN] [WW1] Anonymous Photographer
A Photograph Album of Early 20th Century London; with a number of images of the River Thames Shipping Mudlarks River Communities etc.
London 1914. Tall Octavo. 24.5cm. Original green cloth over bevelled boards titled "Photographs" in gilt to the lower front cover. 24pp; 48 3" x 4" black and white images in total. Light bumping and scuffing to corners and spine ends cup ring to front board some light scuffing strong and tight. Internally clean with heavy grey card mounting leaves 2 captioned numbered and often dated images per page. Photographs are clear sharp and well composed with no apparent defects or signs of wear. A very good handsome album.<br /> <br /> Photographer unidentified. but clearly at least a gifted amateur this album judging from the numbers on the image captions is one surviving volume of at least two or three. The execution is excellent the composition and subject matter are far beyond the usual "Here's a picture of Big Ben!" genre of London photography; major landmarks are represented Hyde Park Kew The Embankment Cleopatra's Needle etc. but the manner of the photography is more artisitic than purely descriptive. The image of Cleopatra's Needle for example is captioned as such but the focus of the image is a small Edwardian boy in a Norfolk Jacket and knickerbockers lounging across one of the bronze sphinxes. The views of the River Thames in particular elevate this album to degree of historical usefulness; the shipping details including a number of photos taken from the water have effectively preserved vernacular images of the sheer weight and diversity of shipping at a time when the river ports of London were the arguably the most important in the world. Aside from the usual luggers and rowboats there are a number of photos of sail wherries and river barges which for a long period of time were the pre-eminent open water trading and delivery vessels in the UK with wherries and shallow water barges making their way from the enormous larder of East Anglia and the North East down to London. <br /> <br /> Wool potatoes ropetextiles from Manchester steel work from Sheffield and the North West coal from Sunderland and Newcastle all traveled mainly by water right up to the 1940's and in some places later. There were barge crews in the 1960's essentially doing the same jobs in the same vessels that their extended and often clannish families had been doing for 200 years or more. The watermen depicted navigating the Thames' vicious currents in these photos were essentially the same men who carried Pepys Newton and Marlowe backwards and forwards between the palaces of Westminster and the stews bear pits and rookeries of the Surreyside. Where there are clear avenues of industry there are the necessary shadow economies that accompany them; there are a number of images of small ragged children scouring the foreshore or "Mudlarking" as it was known around the breaking wharfs where barges and ships too old and dangerous for use were destroyed for re-usable lumber and fittings. A bag of copper nails or a few salvaged shackles even salvaged rope could be enough to get a few pennies at the back door of Pocock's bargebuilders down near Rotherhithe. <br /> <br /> In contrast to these off the beaten track images of industry and poverty there are also depictions of the more fortunate wandering around Hyde Park or Kew visiting the Palace or St. James Park. Also present in a slightly forboding fashion is an image of Graham White's biplane flight at Hendon on July 11th 1914 only 17 days before the opening of hostilities in WW1 an event which would quickly transform aviation from a public spectacle of wonder to the pre-eminent weapon of 20th century warfare. The fact that these images were all taken on the very brink of a conflict that would change every aspect of what they depict is sobering; the UK lost almost a million military casualties during the conflict meaning that a very significant number of the men and boys in these images would be dead within a handful of years of them being photographed. In the words of John Burns "Every drop of the Thames is liquid history. unknown

A Poet in Kashmir. Cover title.
<p>7 x 11-3/4 inches. 28 leaves containing 52 b&w photographs and three blue photographs as well as 17pp of holograph poetry written in white on the black leaves and two hand-painted color illustrations. Black hardcover post-bound album stamped in gilt. A few photos starting to come loose else fine. Very Good or better.</p><p>An exquisite photograph album about the travels through Kashmir of one man and two women -- all white possibly British inscribed only to "Auntie Gillmore" -- filled with vernacular photographs of the countryside and local people. Nearly all of the photographs are captioned and the three blue photos appear to be made after the method devised by Frank A. Perrett to photograph volcanoes in the early 1900s rather than being cyanotypes.</p><p>The trio's journey is narrated in rhymed poetry written by the man of the group as revealed on the last page: "The author of the photographs / And also of the paragraphs / Is standing on the Kamri Pass / Complete with alpenstock and glass. / He hears you say 'The verse might be / A little better' but you see / His job lies not in making rhymes / It's more prosaic and the times / When he is bold enough to write / His thoughts in measured words are quite / Rare and few and far between: / Hence all the nonsense you have seen."</p><p>The poetry in this cataloguer's estimation could indeed be better but it nevertheless illuminates the trio's travels which begin in Srinagar and proceed through the Sind Valley and the Kamri Pass. Included are gorgeous shots of Mt. Nanga Parbat Srinigar waterways a market stall a rice barge converted into a houseboat Gurais and much more. Additionally two illustrations one of a flower and one of a pair of colorful hummingbirds have been painted with a deft hand on two leaves.</p><p>A handsomely-produced record of a remarkable journey through 1930s Kashmir.</p> hardcover

[PHOTOGRAPHY - AUSTRALIA, EGYPT & FRANCE].
Album containing photographs of Australia Egypt and France.
1895. Oblong folio 28 x 39 cm. Contemporary gold-tooled black morocco gilt edges. With 58 photograph prints ca. 21 x 25.5 to 13.5 x 20 cm. Mounted on both sides of the leaves in the album. 60 pp. The album contains 15 silver albumen photographs of Melbourne taken mainly from the series C. Rudd's new views of Melbourne 1886-1887 by Charles Rudd 1849-1901. They show Collins Street Melbourne town hall the public library Parliament House the Court of Law Government House and various other buildings and infrastructure as well as botanical gardens such as Fitzroy Gardens. The photographs of Sydney were the work of the renowned Australian photographer Henry King 1855-1923 born in England in 1855 who emigrated to Australia with his family in 1856. He worked as a photographer at J. Hubert Newman's studio in Sydney before opening his own studio in 1880. King gained recognition for his photographic studies of Australian Aboriginal people and his scenic views of Sydney. He died in 1923 leaving behind his wife son and three daughters. His glass negatives were acquired by J.R. Tyrrell after his death and are now held by the Powerhouse Museum. King is one of Australia's most significant early photographers. The album contains seventeen of Kings photographs of the harbour including Farm Cove and the Circular Quay Government House and interior and exterior photographs of the town hall King and George Street the Mutual Life Association Building the General Post Office and the Ferner Botanical Garden. Rural New South Was appears in nine photographs including images of Illawarra National Park the Hawkesbury River and a series of outdoor photographs taken along the coast at Blackwall and dated July 1895.This curious album of 58 photographs from France Egypt and most importantly Australia opens with a section with six photos from Marseille showing street views the city harbour the Avenue du Prado and the castles. The ten photographs from Egypt depict both the cultural highlights of the country such as the Pyramids the Sphinx the Citadel of Cairo and the Palace of Gizeh as well as ordinary Arabian villages and street scenes. They stemmed from the ateliers of the Abdullah brothers of Constantinople. The Abdullah Frères namely Viçen 1820-1902 Hovsep 1830-1908 and Kevork 1839-1918 Abdullahyan were three Ottoman brothers of Armenian heritage who gained international fame as photographers during the late Ottoman Empire. Some evidence suggests that he may have collaborated with the Zangaki Brothers and he may have been the official photographer for the Universal Company of the Suez Canal. Later he worked in partnership with the British-Italian photographer Antonio Beato. With an owners inscription in pencil "a appartenu Alfred Schmid" some photographs are captioned in black ink or pencil detailing the places. With a small label from the bookshop that sold the album: "Papeterie Sauwen-Jehotte" in Antwerp. The edges are somewhat bumped and some browning and foxing throughout. Otherwise in good condition. unknown

[PHOTOGRAPHY] [INDUSTRIAL HISTORY - ELECTRIFICATION - NEBRASKA] TALBOT, Gardner W (photographer)
Album of 25 Original Photographs Documenting Construction of the Central Power Station Omaha 1910-1912
Omaha: c.1912. Photograph album 9" x 13"; tape-backed marbled boards containing 25 original mounted silver-gelatin prints each 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" printed without borders mounted on linen album leaves; ink captions provide dates and sometimes brief descriptions. Four of the images signed "Talbot" lower right; four more back-stamped with studio stamp of "Gardner W. Talbot Omaha Neb" remainder unsigned but all captioned in the same hand and presumably all by the same photographer. A well-preserved album: covers loose with modern tape repairs but apparently complete; the images generally Very Good or better with minimal fading; occasional mild oxidation to image surfaces but no notable wear or soil. Six additional photographs laid-in as found now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. <br /> <br /> An attractive collection of professional large-format industrial images documenting the expansion of Omaha's Central Power Station between 1910 and 1912. The photographs are especially interesting for providing detailed and personal representations of workers and working conditions within the context of a project of truly massive scale. The images throughout are well-composed and clearly professionally-produced though we have been able to discover no other photographic work by this photographer. Talbot is not mentioned in Mautz Biographies of Western Photographers; the 1910 U.S. Census records him as a resident of Omaha with his occupation listed as "stenographer" with a "railroad office." We would deduce that he was an employee of the Omaha & Council Bluffs Railway charged with documenting the project from start to finish probably for the company's internal records.<br /> <br /> Omaha's Central Power Station situated at the eastern terminus of Leavenworth Street on the banks of the Missouri River was originally constructed in 1904 in order to power the city's new electric rail system under the management of of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Street Railway. By 1910 the rail system like Omaha itself had grown exponentially necessitating the significant increase in capacity which prompted the upgrades to the plant documented here. According to contemporary newspaper accounts the project cost about $600000 and provided an additional 15000kw of power. The structure remains mostly intact to this day; it is on the National Register of Historic Places and was recently converted 2017 to a luxury apartment complex "The Breakers. unknown

Beautiful album with 128 photographs of Egypt and Palestine present day Israel and the West Bank during the British Mandate. It was likely compiled by a British soldier who was stationed in the Middle East during the 1940s. [PHOTOGRAPHY - LATIN AMERICA].
Album with photographs engravings and drawings relating to Madeira Tenerife Brazil Argentina Uruguay and Chile.
1885. Contemporary gold-tooled dark purple quarter morocco brownish-purple pebble-grain cloth sides with a paper label "3" mounted on the front. Oblong ca. 38 x 27.5 cm. With 20 albumen prints 43 plates engraved and lithographed and 3 drawings. Remarkable album documenting the travels of HMS Calliope 1837-1883 a British warship in the first few years after her launch. The ship first sailed to Madeira and Tenerife after which she crossed the Atlantic Ocean to visit various harbour cities in Brazil Argentina Uruguay and Chile. Many of the illustrations and photographs include handwritten annotations about the ship's journey with the exact dates of when she arrived where. As such the album was likely compiled by someone who sailed on the ship during these years possibly a crew member. The album contains photographs drawings and plates relating to the places the Calliope visited between 1838-1840. It starts with photographs of Madeira and Tenerife like the Loo Rock in the harbour of Madeira locals carrying a tourist down the Pico Grande the town of Güímar in Tenerife and an age-old Dragon Tree. As the ship's next destination was Brazil the album contains a number of photographs and illustrations of Rio de Janeiro as well as a drawing of a picnic at the summit of the Corcovado. The Calliope then sailed to Buenos Aires and Santa Fe arriving in August 1838. This part of the album contains a drawing of a gaucho and 6 beautiful photographs by Samuel Boote 1844-1921 one of the most important photographers working in Argentina in the 19th century. His work shows the interior and exterior of the St. Felicitas Church in Santa Fe as well as daily life in this city. The ship then carried the British ambassador from Argentina to Montevideo arriving in June 1839 before continuing to Valparaíso. The final pages of the album contain a map of Montevideo views of Valparaíso and the mountains nearby and a drawing of a bridge. The plates in the album were taken from other works such as Journal of a voyage to Brazil 1824 by Maria Graham and A history of the Brazil 1821 by James Henderson. The photographs were taken in the 1880s which means the album must have been compiled several decades after this particular voyage of the Calliope. However as some of the annotations mention that a location looked different on the plate than when the Calliope arrived the album must have been compiled by a crew member. The Calliope sailed to China after the visit to Valparaíso to serve in the First Anglo-Chinese War 1839-1842. After she sailed to New Zealand and primarily operated in that region until she was converted into a floating chapel in 1855 and deconstructed in 1883. With the yellow bookseller's label of "A & N.C.S.Ld Stationery Dept. 105 Victoria St. S.W." mounted on the back pastedown. The leaves and plates are somewhat foxed likely lacking a plate or drawing on the recto of leaf 16. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover

One of many Northwest Frontier campaigns of British India the Tirah campaign concentrated on the area west and south of Peshawar in the mountainous region between the valleys of the Bara and Kohat Rivers. The large photos were taken by W. Rahn according to the memoirs of Peshawar Column officer Richard Thomsett we had a photographer named Rahn with the column and he accompanied us until we arrived at Ali Masjid in December 1897 when an accident necessitated his returning to India. Rahn was a German who had come out to the East some twenty years before and seemed to be ubiquitous for wherever we were there he was with his camera ready and I must say he took some very excellent pictures. The present album also includes 43 smaller gelatin photos with manuscript captions for 10 of them on a small piece of paper perfectly describing the photos on leaves 5 and 9 of the album. The album is supplemented with a rare 4-page brochure no doubt produced in a small print-run that lists 99 photos. About 20 have been marked by hand in pencil probably by the albums compiler. The brochure indicates that the present photos could be purchased from the Bombay Sappers and Miners.8 of the large photos have contemporary manuscript captions in ink on the mounts. 2 marks on the front paste-down reading "photographs by British Royal Engineers. The 44 photos in the album show the passenger ship SS Pegasus soldiers local people in the streets of Jerusalem and other cities an early war monument checkpoints destroyed military vehicles and other remnants of the war. The album is from the archive of the photographer; some of these photographs were sold to and published in national Dutch and international newspapers and magazines while others remained unpublished.Bianca Dony was part of a group of 150 Christian tourists from various European countries who were now - after the Israeli capture of these areas - able to visit the holy places in the old city of Jerusalem Bethlehem and other places that had previously been inaccessible. [PHOTOGRAPHY - ALGERIA - TUNISIA]
Algerie - Tunisie.
Tunis: Photographie Garrigues 1890. Half black leather red buckram sides blind-stamped boards and gold-stamped spine title in gold lettering on front board marbled endpapers. Oblong album 32 x 41 cm. Album with 50 photographic prints of various sizes 13.5 x 9.5 to 29 x 21.5 cm each pasted on thick paperboard. Album with 50 late-nineteenth-century photographic probably albumen prints of scenes in Algeria and Tunisia made by an unknown photographer. Most of the photographs have a caption naming the place photographed but only 5 indicate place of production or publication of the photos. These were all produced in Tunis at least some by the French photographer J. Garrigues printed and published at his studio. Notable photographs in this album are the first showing a veiled woman a barber at work in the streets riders on their horses camels with riders and luggage the Notre Dame d'Afrique in Algiers. Other subjects include city views fairly candid photos of people in the streets landscapes and the exterior and interior of a mosque. The most remarkable print in this album actually does not fit in with the other images of places in North Africa. It is a photograph of pilgrims before the Great Mosque and Kaaba in Mecca modern day Saudi Arabia with a caption in Arabic. This photograph was taken by the first Arab photographer Al-Sayyid Abd al-Gaffar ca. 1887 making it one of the first photographs of Mecca. The present album contains this picture in its original form including the Arabic caption. An edited version of the photograph in which remnants of the Arabic caption are visible can be found in Hurgronje's Bilder aus Mekka. With a small Antwerp booksellers ticket on the front paste-down". The binding shows some signs of wear slight foxing/browning of the outer edges of the paper boards not affecting the photographic prints some prints have slightly faded edges which does not interfere with the actual image. This album with photographic prints of Algeria Tunisia and remarkably 1 of the Great Mosque and Kaaba in Mecca is overall in good condition. Photographie Garrigues, hardcover

An Edwardian photograph of the staff of a butcher's shop possibly in Woodside in the Adelaide Hills
The five men four in butcher's striped aprons and one woman are standing on the unsealed road in front of the shop next to a horse-drawn delivery cart sign-written with the name 'A. Mount'. The vintage gelatin silver photograph image size 107 × 152 mm is on the original blind-stamped mount of 'McNeills 184 Rundle St Adelaide' 207 × 246 mm. Pencilled on the verso is '1907 A. Mount Woodside'; although we have been unable to verify these details most places in the Adelaide Hills in the Edwardian era probably did look like this. However what is decidedly most rare about this scene is that one of the butchers is of Indian or Afghan descent. unknown

An exceptional Grand Tour souvenir album composed of 26 American Colony albumen photographs of sites in the Holy Land from the Jaffa Gate to the Stations of the Cross Jericho Bethany and the River Jordan to Bethlehem and the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
Jerusalem Palestine: The American Colony Grand New Hotel 1922. Oblong 4to. 12.25 x 9.5 in. 26 leaves unnumbered. on thick gray paper stock. Contemporary calf-backed olive/myrtle wood beveled boards binding Jerusalem “five-fold†cross carved on center of front cover minor scuffing rubbing very minor split at center glue seam front & back covers minor chipping to lower rear corner brown morocco rebacking still a VG exemplar w/ gift manuscript note “From Genevieve March 2 1922†on front pastedown presented to James Duval Phelan 1861-1930 banker philanthropist and former San Francisco Mayor and later California Senator 1914-1920. Ironically the album appears to have been presented to the rabid yellow peril anti-Japanese & Chinese politico while he traveled around the World through Japan China Hong Kong India Egypt Palestine Constantinople and Europe with Phelan’s Phoenix rising from the ashes San Francisco bookplate on front pastedown. This marvelous souvenir photo album composed of Ottoman-era albumen images captured not only recreated iconic religious scenes but also captured Jerusalemites in city streets and the Holy Land in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The album opens with the image of the “Street Scene inside Jaffa Gate†which captures Frederick Vester & Co.’s American Colony shop and photography studio in the right fore-ground of the image with bustling street and clock tower prominent in the center of the image. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The series included here which incorporates a view of the room for the Last Supper and a nicely composed image of a beautifully terraced Garden of Gethsemane follows with the Stations of the Cross. The often incorporate residents in their daily lives watering donkeys pilgrims praying at Stations merchants and those wandering through the gates and winding streets of the ancient city. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical “End Times†beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely “celibate†commune controlled by “Messages from God†to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larson’s “Doomsday†Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she “received a Message†that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904. [Photography]. SMITH, W Ramsay
An original photograph by Ramsay Smith of Port Vila New Hebrides inscribed and signed by him and used as a Christmas card
An original gelatin silver photograph 110 × 90 mm mounted on stiff card 220 × 170 mm inscribed in white ink on the mount beneath the photograph 'With Christmas Greetings from Dr and Mrs Ramsay Smith' stamped on the rear 'Photo. by Dr. W. Ramsay Smith' and captioned in his hand 'At Port Vila - New Hebrides'. Ramsay Smith describes 'picture-making' at Port Vila in detail in his 1924 book 'In Southern Seas' and this image contains all the elements referred to: one's wife 'for comparison and relief to the various objects in the picture' the harbour as background to the wooded heights the ship in the distance . The corners of the mount are slightly rounded and both the image and the mount are a little foxed; overall it is an attractive item with more than the usual amount of background information. <p>William Ramsay Smith 1859-1937 physician naturalist anthropologist civil servant soldier - and controversy was often never far away see the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. His entry there states that 'Believing that tribal Aborigines were dying out he recorded their folklore in "Myths and Legends of the Australian Aborigines"' London 1930. Subsequent to this being published Dr Philip Jones has also recorded in the ADB that from the early 1920s David Unaipon 1872-1967 the Aboriginal preacher author and inventor 'studied Aboriginal mythology and compiled his versions of legends . Gathered before 1930 the legends are in his surviving manuscript in the Mitchell Library: they were commissioned and published by William Ramsay Smith without acknowledgment'. unknown

[Photography]. [South America]
Annotated Vernacular Photograph Album of Mining and Engineering Activities in Peru and Ecuador
Various places in South America 1928. About very good. Sixty-six original photographs most 35. x 5.75 inches. Small oblong folio album string tied. Photos mounted directly to tan heavy card stock. Contemporary manuscript captions throughout and small return address label affixed to rear cover. A number of card leaves coming or fully detached. Occasional small corner chips and minor wear to photos. Interesting photo album containing over sixty-five original and vernacular images that document a work trip through Peru and Ecuador compiled by an American engineer likely named Breese Rosette of Alhambra California per an address label on the rear cover. He evidently traveled on behalf of the Frederick Snare Company a major U.S. civil engineering and construction firm that was responsible for myriad works in Latin America and major projects in New York such as the Triborough Whitestone and Verrazano Narrows Bridges. Rosette went to Snare-owned material sites such as a rock quarry near Callao and a cement plant in Lima and also visited various project locations where the company was engaged such as railroad construction sites and mines. In between times he traveled to major cities such as Lima Callao Quito and Guayaquil and he also documents his travel to work sites by train and by river boat. In all a fascinating and well-rounded album showing American industrial and engineering work in 1920s South America. unknown
