‎Ansel Adams: Letters and Images 1916-1984.‎

‎Boston::: New York Graphic Society 1988. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fineunclipped dust jacket with light sunning to the spine. Photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams 1902 - 1984 said his life was "colored and modulated by the great earth gesture" of the Yosemite Sierra. His first visit in 1916 Adams. using a Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie nearly depleted his pocket money developing film; this we learn from a charming letter to his Aunt Mary reproduced on front cover verso. He joined the Sierra Club in 1919 and was "keeper" of the club's LeConte Memorial Lodge for four consecutive summers; the club was vital to Adams's early success as a photographer and published his first photographs and writings in the club's 1922 Bulletin. This biography is a portrait of Adams through his letters and images. New York Graphic Society,, hardcover‎

First Edition. Paperback. Paris Librarie Militaire J. Dumaine . et chez l'Inventeur 1862. Octavo 32 last blank 16 'Rapport . par M. A. d'Abbadie' pages with a small illustration in the first item plus in the second item a leaf of diagrams a very large folding plan with four inset illustrations and a frontispiece comprising an original albumen paper photograph 134 × 90 mm of the device laid down on a printed mount. Original printed blue wrappers slightly creased with the head of the spine a little bumped throughout; trifling insect damage to some top and bottom corner tips and a few creased corners at the rear; an excellent uncut copy with d'Abbadie's 'Rapport' entirely unopened. On the title page the printed address of Chevallier 'impasse de Saxe' has been ruled out and replaced in manuscript with the address printed on the front cover 41 rue Mazarine. Printed on the inside front wrapper is a 'Note de l'Inventeur'; on the outside rear wrapper there is a list of three works from the same publisher. Auguste Chevallier's ingenious photographic plane-table produced a disc-shaped horizontal panorama by means of a rotating lens. Comparing images taken at different vantage points allowed the surveyor accurately to calculate distances and heights as with a regular plane table but with less room for human error in taking observations. This publication comprises two testimonials for the invention. Librarie Militaire J. Dumaine ... et chez l'Inventeur paperback‎

‎[PHOTOGRAPHY EROTICA SADOMASOCHISM]. RABIER, Hector (compiler).‎

‎Binding title: Peines et supplices.‎

‎France/Belgium 1910. Contemporary black cloth with the title "H. Rabier - peines - supplices" on the spine. 4to 23.5 x 20 cm. Album containing 24 small contact prints 2.5 x 25 cm and 153 albumen or gelatin silver prints 65 x 8 cm both mostly numbered and captioned in French on the photograph 16 photographic reproductions of paintings or drawings 17.5 x 13 cm 2 albumen prints of nudes and 17 silver gelatin prints of sadomasochistic scenes 10.5 x 15 cm. Captivating erotic photo album containing both original photographs and reproductions on the themes of "punishment and penance" which in most cases means flagellation. This specific album was probably compiled by a certain Hector Rabier whose name is inscribed on the spine and was possibly a young Belgian. Among the reproductions of prints in this album can be found various images with an erotic nature showing the flagellation of women by men and women and non-erotic images of the torture and punishment of female heretics and witches including reproductions of artworks. A few series do not involve women and show various types of corporal punishment in the French colonies of Algeria and Indochina and flogging in the British army. A series of 27 images though not explicitly showing scenes of corporal punishment shows life in the Parisian women's prison of Saint Lazare which also doubled as a hospital for the city's prostitutes. 12 photographs show wood engravings of the cruel murder and torture of nude women by Cossacks most including the pins used to hold the engravings in place. Of the original photographs two "academic nudes" show a woman from behind kneeling on top of a chair or hanging face down over a chair or cabinet. The other 17 photographs show a semi-nude woman being bound or tortured by "oriental" men or monks. A montage of small images suggests that the woman-and-monk photographs probably suggesting a witch or heretic being tortured by the inquisition formed part of a larger collection on this subject. Although these photographs were obviously intended as pornographic images they are hardly more explicit than contemporary historical paintings at the Salon or the images in popular histories. With the spine somewhat worn and discoloured the pages of the album very lightly foxed some of the photographs partly detached from the page and some of the larger photographs slightly worn and discoloured at the edges; overall both album and photographs are in good condition. hardcover‎

‎
Photography Haworth-Booth Mark. Camille Silvy: Photographer of Modern Life. Los Angeles: The J. Paul Getty Museum 2010. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. The French photographer Camille Silvy 1834 –1910 was one of the most original artists of his time. More than any other nineteenth-century photographer Silvy exemplifies Charles Baudelaire's idea of the artist as an interpreter of modern life. This book explores Silvy's innovative efforts to master industrial-scale portrait production alongside fineart photography in his popular London studio. Presenting sitters in modern dress was a new phenomenon and Silvy was a pioneer in the creation of the carte-de-visite a photographic visiting card. Combining research into exhibition prints still lifes and street scenes as well as the intimate beautifully lit and posed cartes-de-visite the book demonstrates Silvy's extraordinary originality and his life as a man of both art and commerce.
The J. ‎[Photography – Abolition – Reconstruction] Phillips, Wendell; Sonrel, Antoine‎

‎Carte-de-Visite Portrait of Wendell Phillips c. 1871-1874‎

‎Boston Massachusetts: Antoine Sonrel 121 Washington Street 1874. Albumen photograph on original mount with printed Sonrel studio backstamp. No other examples of this pose located in online institutional collections. Fine condition. A studio portrait of the abolitionist and reform leader Wendell Phillips 1811–1884 shown seated at a table holding a small bundle of papers or pamphlets. Phillips one of the most prominent antislavery orators in the United States continued to play an active role in national reform politics after the war advocating for Black civil rights during Reconstruction and supporting federal enforcement of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. Phillips argued that emancipation was incomplete without political equality pressing for Black suffrage land redistribution in the South and continued federal protection of freedpeople. During the late 1860s and 1870s he remained a visible public lecturer on Reconstruction policy and also aligned himself with the labor reform movement briefly serving as president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and later supporting the Greenback movement.

The photograph was produced by Antoine Sonrel 1827–1912 a French-born artist and photographer who worked in Boston from the mid-1850s. Sonrel was originally trained as a lithographer and produced illustrated plates for American scientific and educational publications before establishing a photographic studio. From 1871–1874 according to local directories published during those years he operated at 121 Washington Street in Boston advertising portrait photography alongside lithographic and illustrative work. This example appears to represent an unrecorded studio pose of Phillips by Sonrel distinct from the better-known Brady and Warren studio portraits circulated during the same period. A particularly nice image of Phillips in his later years with fine contrast. Antoine Sonrel, 121 Washington Street unknown‎

A striking full plate tintype portrait of a serious young boy perhaps only 5 years old dressed in military style in a gray great coat standing with one arm resting on the back of a couch and one leg crossed in front.

Double breasted great coats such as this one were issued during the Civil War to be worn over a uniform during the winter and featured stand up collars and double rows of buttons on the breast and a large cape. This boy's cape extends to just above his sleeve cuff suggesting it was styled after a Confederate cavalry great coat. A name is signed in ink at the top right side "Tracy".

The cheeks hand colored and highlighted with pink and his hair hand colored blonde.
A whole plate image 6 1/2 x 8 1/2". ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - ALHAMBRA]. MAUZAISSE, Charles (photographer).‎

‎Collection of 13 photographs of the Alhambra in Granada.‎

‎Granada 1865. All albumen photographic prints 18 x 24 cm are mounted on black card stock 29.5 x 21 cm. Collection of 19th-century albumen photographic prints of the Alhambra in Spain by Charles Mauzaisse ca. 1823-1885; fl. 1860s. The beautiful images show many different parts of the Alhambra especially of the court and palace of lions including the central fountain and the pavillion with the oriental dome that was added in 1859 and later removed. The Alhambra is a medieval palace and fort of “Moorish” or Muslim rulers of the Kingdom of Granada in Andalusia in the South of the Iberian Peninsula. Additionally the collection contains one photograph of the tomb of the Catholic monarchs which is located in the Royal Chapel of Granada.During the 19th century tourism was booming. Travellers wanted to take proof of their travels home and often did so in the form of photographs. Many photographers took the opportunity to sell their work to tourists. Charles Mauzaisse son of the painter Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse traveled to the south of Spain and fell in love with Granada where he would develop his professional activity alongside other renowned photographers such as Laurent Coutourier and Dubois. All of them - aware of the lucrative field of work that the image of the Alhambra offered - settled more or less definitively in the city just as Masson or Count Vigier did in Seville or Clifford and Laurent in Madrid. The prints are slightly yellowed and some images were possibly overexposed or have faded slightly all prints show clear signs of having previously been mounted on another surface. Some prints have small tears in the edges. The print of the 2 Moroccan women in the Alhambra is probably by a different photographer but the name has been cut off. The collection gives a beautiful insight into 19th-century photography in the Iberian Peninsula - showing off the beautiful Arabic- and Muslim-influences architecture in Granada. unknown‎

‎Collection of eleven snapshots from the Middle East.‎

‎Iraq 1920. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. With 11 snapshots all ca. 6 x 9 cm. Collection of 11 snapshots from the early 1920s likely taken by a British soldier stationed in the Middle East. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where these photographs were taken but presumably in Mesopotamia present day Iraq. Great Britain was actively involved in Mesopotamia from 1914-1932. Prior to the First World War a large portion of the Middle East was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. However when the Ottomans sided with Germany in 1914 Great Britain sent forces to Mesopotamia to protect the Anglo-Persian oil fields. The British army initially suffered a major defeat but eventually gained the upper hand and captured Baghdad in 1917. In 1920 after the Ottoman Empire was partitioned the United Kingdom formally established control in the region under a mandate of the League of Nations. However the Iraqi people resented this idea and revolted. In 1922 Great Britain and Iraq then signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in which Iraq was given the right for self-government while Great Britain stayed in control of the country's foreign policy. This would last until Iraq's independence in 1932.The present snapshots were taken in the early days of British control in the region and depict the atmosphere at the time. They show the daily life of locals including women collecting water from the river men standing guard and the hustle and bustle in the streets. Also included are various group photos of British soldiers and locals. The photographs show some traces of wear around the corners and edges but are overall in good condition. unknown‎

‎Collection of thirteen press photographs.‎

‎1930. Kept in a brown kraft paper envelope. With 13 gelatin silver prints various sizes. A collection of thirteen press photographs from the 1930s showing Saudi Arabian leaders during diplomatic visits to Europe. The beautifully sharp and clear photographs give a good impressions of what these events must have been like at the time. Most of the photographs come with the text that would have accompanied them when they were published in a newspaper and are stamped on the back by the press agency that had the rights for publication. We have not been able to find any of these photographs in online archives.Four of the images show Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud 1906-1975 during a diplomatic visit to Great Britain. Faisal was the third son of King Abdulaziz the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. Faisal was very intelligent and was given numerous important duties as a result. He was sent on a five-month long diplomatic visit to Great Britain and France when he was just 13 and achieved his first military successes when he was 16. He succeeded his half brother as king of Saudi Arabia in 1964 and became a well-loved ruler. The present photographs however show his visit to Great Britain in 1939. In particular his visit to the Royal Air Force stations in Middlesex and Northolt where he viewed the Hawker Hurricane planes which he considered to buy for the Royal Saudi Air Force. After his return however he decided against it.The other photographs show Fuad Bey Hamza 1899-1951 the Saudi ambassador in France and Fakry Pacha dates unknown the Egyptian ambassador in France during an Eid al-Fitr celebration in Paris in 1939 a portrait of Sheikh Sir Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah 1895-1965 the 11th ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait and the Kaaba in Mecca during hajj. Some of the photographs are slightly discoloured or creased around the corners. ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - ENGINEERING - IRAN].‎

‎Collection of 19 engineering photographs in Iran.‎

‎Iran 1928. Oblong album 24.5 x 29.6 cm. Mid-19th-century bright blue faux-leather the front board features a pictorial on-lay within a rectangular frame the illustration depicts a young woman in traditional costume holding a large ceramic vessel. The joints are laced through onto 2 supports. With 19 black and white photographs ca. 23.1 x 17.1 cm on thick dark blue/black paper. 9 ll. Collection of 19 engineering photographs taken in Iran dating from ca. 1928 to 1930 CE. The majority of the images are annotated with the year 1308 AH 1929-1930 CE while only photograph 7 is dated 1307 AH 1928-1929 CE.The album documents large-scale engineering works and urban modernisation in Iran during the early years of the Pahlavi dynasty 1925-1941 under Reza Shah Pahlavi 1878-1944. In this period cities such as Tabriz underwent significant restructuring and infrastructural development as part of broader state-led reforms. The photographs depict surveying activities including measuring instruments mounted on tripods uniformed officials and extensive reconstruction works. Several photographs are identifiable as views of Tabriz including the development of the Gaji Gate Darb-e Gajil in December 1929 Ahrap Ahrab Street and Munjam Street under construction. Other views show street levelling and widening works illustrating the transformation of older urban quarters into broader modern thoroughfares.Further noteworthy subjects include railway works and one photograph taken in Jafarabad shows several men wearing a combination of traditional clothing including papakha-style headgear and Western clothing reflecting the broader cultural transition of the period. The present work therefore stands as an informative visual record of early 20th-century Iranian engineering urban renewal and state modernisation. With some glue staining to the dark blue paper on several pages. A few photographs show minor marginal wear not affecting the images themselves. The final photograph is not mounted on the album paper but on a separate piece of card and is loosely inserted. The earliest photos show the visit of Anna Vasil'evna mother of the fallen hero Petr Naboichenko at the company with which he served her face shown weeping before an oversized portrait of her son. ‎Composite Photograph of 100 Portraits of Actresses c. 1860‎

‎Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1860. Carte de visite measuring 2 ¼ by 3 ½ inches on heavy cardstock. Wear to both photograph and mount overall very good to excellent. Though Dadaists are frequently credited with the invention of photomontage techniques involving combining multiple photographs into a single composite image have been around since at least the mid-Victorian era.1 These could be made by combining negatives or by combining prints and then re-photographing the result so that it looked seamless. Offered here is an example of early composite imagery published by F. L. Moore of Philadelphia consisting of portraits of women numbered 1–100. It seems to be a reproduction by Moore of an 1860s “theatrical portrait gallery†of actresses’ portraits produced by C. D. Fredericks & Co. of New York City; note that Moore is identified verso as an “Importer & Publisher of Cartes de Visite &c.†not a photographer. An interesting early example of photomanipulation.

1 Robert A. ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - EGYPT]. ZANGAKI BROTHERS‎

‎Egypt: Zangaki brothers 1891. Original gold-stamped bubble-grained maroon cloth over boards modern maroon cloth spine and leather corners. Gold stamped title and year on the front white watered silk endpapers. Oblong album 31.5 x 41 cm. With 34 large albumen prints mounted on heavy cardstock leaves. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned in French in the negative and signed 'Zangaki'. The last one is signed Sebah & Joallier. The Zangaki prints measure 22.5 x 28.5 cm; the Sebah & Joallier one is 20.5 x 26.5 cm. A large German album with 34 albumen prints of Egypt. The Greek brothers G. and C. Zangaki were photographers who worked in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century. Due to increased tourism to this region after the opening of the Suez Canal there was a large demand for souvenir photographs. Photographers like the Zangaki brothers as well as Sebah & Joallier catered to this. The Zangakis were among the first commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of Egypt. They travelled through the country with a portable darkroom to capture high-quality images of famous monuments and daily life though the latter were usually posed. These images were then printed and sold to tourists either separately or compiled into albums. According to John Hannavy the brothers "produced some of the finest images of late Victorian Egypt". The 34 photographs include: the great pyramid Cairo and the Nile dervishes and other exotic looking locals Egyptians standing on top of the sphinx obeliscs the Ramesseum Karnak temple the temple of Dendera the Great Pyramid Egyptians climbing the pyramid the mosque and tomb of Muhammad Ali Saqqara and many others. With two small library stamps on the first page not affecting the photograph. The book has been rebacked. The left side of the front board has faded and the corners are worn. Minor browning around the edges of the leaves. Back flyleaf loose. The photos are crisp and clear and the book is otherwise in good condition.l Erdem Views of Egypt by Georgios and Constantinos Zangaki: Examining a late nineteenth-century photographic album at the Art Gallery of Ontario thesis 2006; Hannavy Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography pp. 1036 1093 & 1521. ‎Die-Cut Cabinet Card of a Young Woman in Five Different Attitudes‎

‎United States 1910. Very Good. United States: ca. 1910. Cabinet card 13x20cm; black card stock blind embossed depicting a windmill scene die-cut to reveal five small snapshot portraits of a young white woman in different attitudes. Light rubbing to margins else a Very Good example.

Quite unusual cabinet card of a funny young woman posing with and without her hat looking thoughtful pensive and maybe even a little romantic. The center image however was taken of her sitting behind a chair to make it look like she's behind bars. A charming example of how even in the age of severe and highfalutin studio portraiture photography could still reveal the subject's silly side. unknown‎

‎[PHOTOGRAPHY]. POUNCY, John‎

‎Dorsetshire Photographically illustrated. By J. Pouncy. The detail and touch of nature faithfully reproduced by a new process on stone by which views are rendered truthful artistic and durable‎

‎London. Dorchester: Bland & Long. John Pouncy Photographic institution 1857. Four parts in two volumes. 90; 82pp. Lithographic title to Vol I. terminal advertisements and colophon leaves to each volume all included in preceding collation. With 79 photo-lithographic plates one of which double-page. Original publisher's limp cloth decorated in blind and titled in gilt; Vol II neatly recased in the original binding at an early date. Some rubbing tearing and a little marking to binding; loss to spines. Sporadic spotting to text and images occasional marginal tears including to endpapers and repairs only touching the image on two plates. Inscriptions to each front endpaper of 'Mrs Michel' of Whatcombe House featured in this volume and described as 'not distinguished by any remarkable feature' but as beautifully situated with 'adjacent grounds extensive and picturesque'. An unsophisticated copy of the most important study of Dorset country-houses from their golden age which was also the first - and only - major English book produced in photolithography and is as such a milestone in the history of permanent photographic reproduction. It was described by Gernsheim as 'not only the first but remained the only attempt in book form to reproduce photographic views from nature by photolithography' and by McLean as marking a 'transitional stage between drawing and unretouched photography'. As is explained by English photographic pioneer John Pouncy 1818-1894 in both the introduction and advertisements of this present volume the fading nature of early photography was the revolutionary illustrative median's greatest weakness: 'astonishing as is the effect and almost perfect as is the beauty of some of these works of art permanency is found wanting' or in short 'Photographs very generally fade'. Thus between the conception and completion of this photographic study of his beloved native Dorsetshire Pouncy called 'in the aid of another art that of Lithography; and thus without forfeiting the exactness which is the peculiar characteristic of the one to ensure the quality of durability which is unhappily wanting to it by means of the co-operation of the other' and so 'the views which were originally announced as Photographs will now appear as Photo-Lithographs'. As the reproduced excerpt from a contemporary Poole newspaper review highlights Pouncy's devised process involved transferring long-exposure 'photography to stone and then re-transfers it to paper'; a service that he also here advertises as available from his Dorchester studios. Non static-features were added in by hand giving a rather ghostly appearance. The process must necessarily have been both time-consuming and expensive and each part of this work published by subscription was advertised originally at the price of £1 1s or £5 5s for the planned whole the fifth and sixth of which were never published. Subscribers included the poet William Barnes and many of the owners of the houses featured in the book. Not pure photographs but not simply hand-drawn lithographs either his process produced images truly symbolic of the Victorian artistic compact between mechanisation and manual labour; no book could claim to more truly occupy the threshold between photographic and lithographic illustration. Gernsheim p.546. McLean Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing p.128. First edition. Oblong folio. Bland & Long. John Pouncy, Photographic institution hardcover‎
