SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CAMERA CLUB LABELS
Unique collection of labels representing a variety of camera clubs in Southern California during their heyday from the 1930s through the ‘50s. This grouping represents 20 different Southern California camera clubs one Chicago camera club and two versions of labels for amateur photographer Al Carah a Fellow of the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs in 1955.<br /> <br /> As cameras became more accessible during the first decade of the 20th century a number of serious amateur photographers reacted to the snapshot craze by forming organizations dedicated to promoting photography as a fine art rather than as a popular pastime or commercial pursuit. Camera club members were able to participate in competitions and study groups designed to advance their photographic knowledge and skills.<br /> <br /> A detailed list of all 23 labels is available upon request. unknown

Real picture post cards mailed from Southern Rhodesia during the period in which it was a British protectorate administered by Cecil Rhodes' company the British South Africa Company to a Mrs. J. C. Clarke of 17 Bellevue Crescent Edinburgh Scotland posted from Rhodesia by her brother Will. <br /> <br /> Real vernacular photographs many captioned by the author including: Zimbabwe Ruins "between the river & second wall of the temple"; inside the temple; "another view inside the famous temple"; "Alan Wilson's first grave; after the last stand at Shangani"; the temple outer doorway on the west side; the outer wall of the Temple Zimbabwe; Summer time on the banks of the Sanyati River near Salisbury S. Rhodesia; First Gaol Gatooma a giant ant heap; workers transporting mercury to a mine; a truly rural hut occupied by the Infant School mistress; a road side shop in Gatooma; Native War Dance; block of offices in Gatooma built by Mssrs. Ewins & Fitt; In the midst of the Sanyati River near Salisbury showing a British family with small children standing on rocky outcropping; and the Great Zimbabwe Ancient Ruins Smart & Copley Bulawayo copyright.<br /> <br /> The Great Zimbabwe ruins which still exist today are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest ancient structure south of the Sahara second only to the Pyramids of Egypt in size. According to legend they were the capital city of the Queen of Sheba founded between 1100 ad 1450 AD. Gatooma now called Kadoma was an important mining town founded in the 1890s.<br /> <br /> 13 postcards are postally used split backs with franked 1D stamps of the British South Africa Company Rhodesia. 5 1/4 x 3 1/4". Sydney Harbour and Circular Quay.
Sydney 1875. Ca. 8 x 46.5 cm. Panorama photograph consisting of three albumen prints joined together with white bookcloth. A long folding panorama photograph of Sydney Harbour in the late 19th century. It prominently features the east side of Circular Quay which at the time was a commercial working wharf dominated by the wool trade. The many wool stores that were built here have since been demolished. The large wool store of Hill Clark and Co at the end of the wharf which was completed in 1883 cannot be found on the photograph which means it must have been taken in 1882 at the latest. The photograph is not signed but is reminiscent of the work of Australian photographers Charles Bayliss 1850-1897 and Francis Whitfield Robinson ca. 1819-after 1882 who made similar panorama photos of Sydney around this time.The photograph is slightly discoloured one of the bookcloth hinges is partly torn. Laura Gilpin's brilliant camera study of Chichen Itza and a tribute to the Maya and to the group of scientists who have restored and reconstructed the beautiful temples. Laura Gilpin 1891-1979 born in Colorado was a 1917 graduate of the Clarence H. White School of Photography. INSCRIBED BY THE FAMOUS 'LIFE' PHOTOGRAPHER TO LONG-TIME 'LIFE' PUBLISHER AND EDITOR CHUCK WHITTINGHAM. This very finely produced Italian publication was produced for the Programma di Iniziative Culturali of the Olivetti company. First editions thus of these four early pieces of airbrush trade promotional literature for Liberty Walkup’s patented airbrush which transformed the photography retouching and printing industry in the 1880’s. Fitted with air blast tube air regulator and a double-action trigger the airbrush enabled touchup artists to vastly speed up colour retouching and retouching of portraits and photographs in studio settings and by 1891 were publishing an in-house “Air Brush Journal.†Originally developed by Abner Peeler Walkup d. 1927 and his brother Charles Walkup bought the rights in 1881 and quickly developed the invention further obtained patent rights and traveled the country demonstrating the value of the device. Sharjah 1980. Housed in a clear plastic folder with a piece of cardboard for protection. Ca. 19.5 x 29 cm. One photograph. Beautiful glossy press photograph of the Souk al-Markazi or Blue Souk in Sharjah. The impressive building was designed by British architects Michael Lyle & Partners and completed in 1978. Meant to ressemble a traditional bazaar it is one of the most iconic buildings in Sharjah and serves as the main shopping centre. The present photograph of the souk was taken in January 1980 for the Sunday edition of Associated Press News APN. It accompanied an article by Elias Antar dates unknown about the United Arab Emirates. The description by APN that would have come with the photograph when it was requested for use is included on the back.The lower right corner of the photograph is slightly creased without affecting the image. Light bumping to spine ends and some minor scuffing to extremities some scratches and shelfwear to the rear board clean and strong; internally clean illustrated throughout with the English text and 62 images printed onto heavy grey card in the manner of a 19th century photo album. A very good smart copy indeed with very light wear.<br /> <br /> A beautifully produced collected of images and reminiscenses depicting the boyhood creativity of the man who would become one of France's most celebrated photographers. Following on from his embryonic experiments with portrait and action photography in fin de siecle France through to his developing interest in scientific and aeronautical subjects. St. Louis: Published from 116 North Fourth Street 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Front cover now detached and the spine largely lacking but the text block is tight and the book can be easily rebacked. Despite the defects Very Good and quite scarce. The first twelve issues of this scarce western photography monthly edited by J. H. Fitzgibbon one of America's finest daguerreotypists and well-known for his portraits of Native Americans. Bound in contemporary half morocco with the original front and rear wrappers for all issues as well as the ads bound in. Illustrated with 10 original photographs mostly mounted albumens including a portrait of Fitzgibbon by Bogardus an Adirondacks landscape by Stoddard and various posed studies. One image the Great Steel Bridge of St. Louis is printed directly on the paper; another is a chromotype of the Chicago Apollo Musical Club by Gentile. There is no image with the sixth issue nor is one listed in the contents. The albertype by E. Bierstadt for the eleventh issue is lacking as is a ferrotype specimen holder in one of the ads. The articles are informative and instructional covering both news and many different technical aspects of photography at the time with much longing for a return to the daguerreotype and a number of articles on new processes such as the Lambertype. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the editor to T. S. Lambert in January of 1878 on the inside front cover. Theodore Sarony T. S. Lambert was no relation to the creator of the Lambertype Claude Lambert but he did team up with Claude to sell exclusive license for the Lambertype process. <br/><br/> Published from 116 North Fourth Street hardcover

Leicester UK: Cascelloid 1930. Very good . Beautifully-produced trade catalogue from the Cascelloid "Palitoy" company displaying a wide range of baby dolls and other toys. Several uncomfortable designs of black children with pitch-dark skin date this catalogue at roughly the 1930s when the Cascelloid company was dubbed the "House of Constant Progress" by the industry press for its material innovations with the plastics Bexoid and Plastex. One page features a celluoid model by the noted designer Mary Lucie Attwell a doll named "Diddums." The catalogue also displays the company's offerings of animal dolls die-cast trucks pool toys golf and ping-pong sets rattles pinwheels and more. Needless to say color photography was not the norm at this time and this catalogue comprises a beautiful set of vivid and sharp photographic prints. A truly exceptional example unlike anything we've seen: simultaneously surreal and nostalgic. Oblong 4to. album. Blue leather-covered boards. Contains 29 color photographs all 9" by 6.5" approx. mounted on rectos one each of light-gray cardboard leaves. About very good plus overall. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to boards. 1880. Tipped onto a stiff paper mount ca. 40 x 30 cm. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. One albumen print ca. 22 x 27.5 cm. Striking large photograph of two Bedouins on horseback carrying large birds of prey for hunting. Bedouins have a long history of falconry as it was difficult for them to catch live prey in the desert otherwise. They typically captured the falcons trained them for a few months then released them back into the wild before breeding season. This tradition no longer exists in this manner as hunting is now forbidden throughout most of the Arabian Peninsula. As such the present photograph offers a unique insight into 19th-century falconry in the Arabian Desert.The edges are somewhat discoloured and the corners are creased from a past mounting method. Two original vintage silver-gelatin studio portraits ca 5-3/8" x 3-1/2"; printed to borders with embossed edges; printed for postal use on verso with divided backs for addressing. Slight crease to one corner but both images very well-preserved Near Fine. Embossed studio stamp in image lower right: "Lucerne / Studio / 1437 Fillmore Street / S.F. Cal." <br /> <br /> Also included are slightly larger proof versions of the same two images on thinner photographic paper each with abrasions at center of image with evidence of scrapbook adhesion to versos; Good only. <br /> <br /> The first image is of two young female sitters posing arms encircling each other's backs dressed in identical Pierrot costumes -- possibly attired for a costume ball. The second image is a solo portrait of one of the same two sitters. Undated; sitters unidentified but this studio appears to have been active in the period 1909-1911. An advertisement offering Lucerne Studio for sale appears in the February 1912 issue of Camera Craft a San Francisco photographic trade journal. Iran and Iraq 1917. Contemporary cloth one album in in red and one in grey with 'Kodak' lettered in gold on the front board and a black classical meander border tooled near the foot. The albums are kept together by a black ribbon. Oblong 8vo ca. 15.5 x 20 cm. With 191 resp. 95 and 96 gelatin silver prints all ca. 4 x 6 cm. 2 volumes. Remarkable set of Kodak photo albums with nearly 200 photographs of military life and the oil industry in Iran and Iraq in the early 20th century. The photographs were most likely taken by the compiler of the albums and show scenes from his daily life. Most of them are captioned. Included are images of Persian oil fields Abu Zenema Sinai coast Port Sudan Bushehr Basra various locations along the Tigris Euphrate and Shatt al-Arab rivers Ashwaz and Shush. The photographs also show locals involved in various activities including races shark hunting and selling wares. The compiler of the album was likely a British soldier who was stationed in Basra and other locations in Iran and Iraq after the First World War.The edges and corners of both albums are slightly scuffed with a few light stains on the back board of the red album. The paper on which the photographs are mounted is slightly browned ten of the photos have either creased corners or a damaged surface some photographs a little loose within their windows missing a photo on the final page of the red album. Some very light scuffing at spine tips and corners otherwise bindings are fine. Off-setting of photograph onto tissue-guards creating some wonderful ghosts. Australia 1885. Folio ca. 44 x 36.5 cm. Contemporary gold-tooled black morocco with the title lettered in gold on the front gold-tooled turn-ins gilt edges watered-silk end papers. With 65 albumen prints. 29 ll. Late 19th-century photo album with views of New South Wales. The album contains 65 albumen prints of highlights in the region primarily in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. It was bought by the civil engineer Clément van de Velde dates unknown who was born in Belgium and moved to Australia in 1884 where he attempted to set up a sugar-beet industry. He also served as the vice-consul for Belgium. He gifted the album to his friend Cobus in 1885 possibly as a keepsake for a trip they undertook together.At least a third of the photographs show important buildings and other landmarks in Sydney including the Government House the Town Hall the General Post Office the Australian Museum the different colleges of the University of Sydney the Department of Lands building and the public library in Bent Street that has been demolished in 1967. Most of these buildings were relatively new at the time these photographs were taken. Also included are photographs of Hyde park and the Captain Cook monument the Man O'War steps Argyle cut Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the botanic gardens. The other photographs in the album show the towns and nature surrounding Sydney such as the Katoomba Falls the Three Sisters Govetts Leap and Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains the Zig Zag railway the Fitzroy Falls Fort Denison Broken Bay various views of the Nepean River as well as four portraits of Australian Aboriginals.With a contemporary French inscription on the verso of the first flyleaf "Mon cher Cobus Je prie de vouloir accepter cet album en souvenir de nos bons rapporte. Votre dévote Clément van de Velde. Sydney 10 may 1885.". The binding has been professionally restored the boards are somewhat scratched and dented. The leaves are warped and foxed the lower corners of some of the leaves are torn without affecting the photographs the photographs have somewhat discoloured. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf.
