[Vernacular Photography - Nude Women's Wrestling]
C— D— Stomped in Nude Pro Wrestling" Photo Album
United States 1980. Very Good. United States: n.d. ca. 1980. Octavo 21cm; pictorial QSS 1-hour photo album containing twenty-two 22 original color snapshots 8.5x13cm with an additional photograph added to the final snapshot as a collage element. Wrappers rather rubbed old marker annotation to both covers—"Pro Girl Wrestlers in Nude Bowl"—with "C— D— Stomped in Nude Pro Wrestling" in pen to front. Contents about fine. Very Good overall.<br /> <br /> A series of twenty-two blurry snapshots taken of a color television set showing a match between two nude pro women wrestlers. Things seem fairly even until the final four shots which culminate in one woman finally knocking out the other. The end shot captures the victor standing over her collapsed opponent while flexing her muscles over which the compiler a woman in her fifties or sixties has glued on a cut-out photo of herself breasts exposed enjoying the show. <br /> <br /> A crude but humane example of the difficulties of documenting the ephemerality of television that also happens to capture the heyday of a favorite erotic medium which Carmen Electra and pay-per-view tried and failed to resuscitate in the mid 2000s. unknown

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM WITH IMAGES OF THE 1927 SHANGHAI MASSACRE
A photographic album with more than 165 images of people and locations in Asia created by a young Dutch chef serving on a merchant ship in the mid 1920s. Notably the album includes two photographs taken on the streets of Shanghai at the time of the 1927 massacre. The presumed creator of the album appears in many of the photographs and is identified in several captions as a chef. In one image he is shown killing a chicken while other photographs show him working in the kitchen onboard ship. The album contains a wide variety of images from his travels mainly centered around Bali ranging from farmers in the rice fields to waterfalls and temples. Notably there are two photographs with extensive captions in Dutch on the verso concerning the conflict in Shanghai. One shows a bustling street scene while the second shows armed soldiers hunkered down behind sandbag barricades. The Shanghai Massacre of April 12 1927 was a violent suppression of organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of China by the military forces of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and conservative factions in the Kuomintang Nationalist Party. Hundreds of communists were rounded up arrested and tortured; most were executed. The album also contains a variety of curious images including a Charlie Chaplin impersonator surrounded by a group of children ice and snow covering the deck of the ship "winter in Yokohama Japan" and a series showing a small water plane that appears to have sunk. Most of the black and white photographs are captioned in white on the gray paper album leaves and have extensive holographic captions written in Dutch on the verso. The photographs vary in size but are generally 4 1/2" x 5". Several dozen are secured with photo corners but the vast majority are pasted into the album with a few laid in loose. The brown paper album is secured with a silk yellow string tie. unknown

Médaille d'or. Exposition universelle 1878. Tampon bleu ; Editeur J. Kuhn, Paris. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]

Walt Disney's African Lion A True-Life Adventure
New York: Simon and Schuster in collaboration with Marc Barraud 1956. Simon and Schuster edition in English. Hardcover. Very Good. 74pp. Quarto 29.5 cm White cloth spine with photographically illustrated paper over boards. Covers rubbed. With tipped-in illustrations all present. Designed by Armand A. Bigle and produced by Marc Barraud from the original French language edition "Walt Disney's Lions d'Afrique."<br /> <br /> An account which is not only a biography of the King of Beasts but of all unique wildlife inhabiting his domain. The story first appeared as a True-Life Adventure film and is now presented here in book form. The color photographs were taken by famed Ketchikan wildlife cinematographers and wildlife photographers Alfred and Elma Milotte who spent three years following lions in Africa. The Milottes were first hired by Disney to film the Alaska wilderness. Alfred and Elma created the True-LIfe Adventure series for Walt Disney and won six Academy Awards while working for Disney. The couple married for fifty-five years traveled the world for four decades. They strangely died within a week of each other in 1989.<br /> <br /> Walt Disney produced thirteen True-Life Adventure series films in the 1950s. The films were shown in public schools for decades and it is thought that some students were even influenced to go into environmental careers as a result of seeing these films.<br /> <br /> "If there is a note of grimness here it stems from reality of life; if there is a touch of humor it comes from the genuineness of rich materials for Nature can be both cruel and kind. both macabre and beguiling. and infinitely eternally strange." - Walt Disney. [WESTERN AMERICANA / PHOTOGRAPHY / MANITOBA / WOMEN'S HISTORY]
Delightful Group Portrait of Young Women in a Charming Tableau Vivant
Butte Montana: Genelli Studio N.D. Circa 1895. First Edition First Printing. Original Photograph on Mount. Original gelatin silver photograph measuring 13.25" x 10.5" mounted on its original heavy card-stock frame to an overall size of 13.75" x 10.75". An utterly charming and highly uncommon group portrait capturing ninteen young women dressed uniformly in flowing white gowns some adorned with sashes and bows. In contrast to the often rigid and sombre studio portraits typical of the period the image is remarkable for the subjects' relaxed candid and cheerful poses and expressions. Their choice of attire - resembling Victorian lingerie dresses - strongly suggests the group was gathered for a specific collective event such as a tableau vivant a theatrical production a society pageant or perhaps a graduation ceremony. Bears the stylized imprint of the prominent Western photography firm "Genelli" to the lower-left margin alongside a full studio stamp to the verso reading "Genelli 122 North Main St. Butte Montana." accompanied with a contemporary manuscript ink annotation also to the verso which suggests the era "about 1895" a location of provenance "Portage la Prairie" and a subject "Aunt Frank"'. Captured and produced by the American photography firm Genelli Studio a prestigious high-end franchise known for their artistic portraiture sophisticated lighting techniques and use of elaborate theatrical backdrops beautifully exemplified by the rich drapery and wainscoting apparent in the background of this lovely image. Exceptionally well-preserved retaining excellent clarity sharp focus and tonal range showing only but minor typical silvering to the darker areas and a few largely unobtrusive minor spots to the centre; Original mount remains sound showing some moderate edgewear slight rounding and minor delamination to the corners. Overall very good. Thoroughly lovely and charming. Rare. <br/><br/> Genelli Studio unknown

ICE PALACE LEADVILLE COLORADO
Denver: W.H. Jackson & Co. Photo 1896. Hand color-tinted photograph image: 9†x 3 ½†mount: 15†x 9 ¼â€.<br /> <br /> Although Leadville was one of the largest boomtowns in Colorado the mines were in decline by the 1890s and a plan to save the community in 1895 came in the form of an ice hotel and winter carnival. After months of fundraising and then building the ice palace opened on January 1 1896. It measured 450’ long by 320’ wide with five-foot thick walls. Two octagonal towers rose 90 feet at the entrance on the north where arched doorways led visitors inside. Smaller 60-foot towers flanked the sides and the south wall. Inside there was a rink that would accommodate 1000 skaters along with two ballrooms a restaurant and a 20-foot wide promenade that led people down the middle of the place.<br /> <br /> On its first day of operation 2500 visitors came by train wagon horseback and on foot to see the gigantic wonder. For nearly four glorious months visitors paid .50 cents for adults and .25 cents per child to walk past the ice sculpture of “Lady Leadville†at the entrance and into the fantasy world of their dreams. It’s estimated there were 250000 visitors.<br /> <br /> Some edgewear and staining to the mount with a small scuff to the photograph. W.H. Jackson & Co. Photo unknown

[Western Americana – Photography] Haynes, Frank J
Portrait of an Affluent Man Fargo Dakota Territory 1879
Fargo Dakota Territory 1879. Cabinet card photograph measuring appx 4 x 5 ½ inches on larger mount. Very good plus. An early studio portrait by Frank Jay Haynes taken during his initial establishment in Fargo Dakota Territory shortly after his 1879 move from Moorhead. The mount—“Art Studio cor. 8th Ave. & Main St.â€â€”appears to represent Haynes’s first likely short-lived location in the city set just off the main commercial corridor before he relocated his business to the more prominent Front Street Main Avenue. The sitter an affluent-looking man in a fur overcoat holds a cane. In 1879 the affluent class of Fargo consisted primarily of railroad officials tied to the Northern Pacific Railway for which Haynes would later become the official photographer land agents and speculators capitalizing on townsite expansion grain merchants and elevator operators profiting from the wheat boom and a small professional class. Haynes was the first major photographer in the area and would have a prolific output; this image represents an example of his early work before he was established in the city. unknown
