‎Delightful Group Portrait of Young Women in a Charming Tableau Vivant‎

‎Butte Montana: Genelli Studio N.D. Circa 1895. First Edition First Printing. Original Photograph on Mount. Original gelatin silver photograph measuring 13.25" x 10.5" mounted on its original heavy card-stock frame to an overall size of 13.75" x 10.75". An utterly charming and highly uncommon group portrait capturing ninteen young women dressed uniformly in flowing white gowns some adorned with sashes and bows. In contrast to the often rigid and sombre studio portraits typical of the period the image is remarkable for the subjects' relaxed candid and cheerful poses and expressions. Their choice of attire - resembling Victorian lingerie dresses - strongly suggests the group was gathered for a specific collective event such as a tableau vivant a theatrical production a society pageant or perhaps a graduation ceremony. Bears the stylized imprint of the prominent Western photography firm "Genelli" to the lower-left margin alongside a full studio stamp to the verso reading "Genelli 122 North Main St. Butte Montana." accompanied with a contemporary manuscript ink annotation also to the verso which suggests the era "about 1895" a location of provenance "Portage la Prairie" and a subject "Aunt Frank"'. Captured and produced by the American photography firm Genelli Studio a prestigious high-end franchise known for their artistic portraiture sophisticated lighting techniques and use of elaborate theatrical backdrops beautifully exemplified by the rich drapery and wainscoting apparent in the background of this lovely image. Exceptionally well-preserved retaining excellent clarity sharp focus and tonal range showing only but minor typical silvering to the darker areas and a few largely unobtrusive minor spots to the centre; Original mount remains sound showing some moderate edgewear slight rounding and minor delamination to the corners. Overall very good. Thoroughly lovely and charming. Rare.

Genelli Studio unknown‎

‎ICE PALACE LEADVILLE COLORADO‎

‎Denver: W.H. Jackson & Co. Photo 1896. Hand color-tinted photograph image: 9†x 3 ½†mount: 15†x 9 ¼â€.

Although Leadville was one of the largest boomtowns in Colorado the mines were in decline by the 1890s and a plan to save the community in 1895 came in the form of an ice hotel and winter carnival. After months of fundraising and then building the ice palace opened on January 1 1896. It measured 450’ long by 320’ wide with five-foot thick walls. Two octagonal towers rose 90 feet at the entrance on the north where arched doorways led visitors inside. Smaller 60-foot towers flanked the sides and the south wall. Inside there was a rink that would accommodate 1000 skaters along with two ballrooms a restaurant and a 20-foot wide promenade that led people down the middle of the place.

On its first day of operation 2500 visitors came by train wagon horseback and on foot to see the gigantic wonder. For nearly four glorious months visitors paid .50 cents for adults and .25 cents per child to walk past the ice sculpture of “Lady Leadville†at the entrance and into the fantasy world of their dreams. It’s estimated there were 250000 visitors.

Some edgewear and staining to the mount with a small scuff to the photograph. W.H. Jackson & Co. Photo unknown‎

‎[Western Americana – Photography] Haynes, Frank J‎

‎Portrait of an Affluent Man Fargo Dakota Territory 1879‎

‎Fargo Dakota Territory 1879. Cabinet card photograph measuring appx 4 x 5 ½ inches on larger mount. Very good plus. An early studio portrait by Frank Jay Haynes taken during his initial establishment in Fargo Dakota Territory shortly after his 1879 move from Moorhead. The mount—“Art Studio cor. 8th Ave. & Main St.â€â€”appears to represent Haynes’s first likely short-lived location in the city set just off the main commercial corridor before he relocated his business to the more prominent Front Street Main Avenue. The sitter an affluent-looking man in a fur overcoat holds a cane. In 1879 the affluent class of Fargo consisted primarily of railroad officials tied to the Northern Pacific Railway for which Haynes would later become the official photographer land agents and speculators capitalizing on townsite expansion grain merchants and elevator operators profiting from the wheat boom and a small professional class. Haynes was the first major photographer in the area and would have a prolific output; this image represents an example of his early work before he was established in the city. unknown‎

‎[Women's History – Medicine – Crimean War – Early Photography] Kilburn, William Edward [Nightingale, Florence]‎

‎Carte-de-Visite Portrait of Florence Nightingale‎

‎N.p. 1870. Carte After the original photograph by William Edward Kilburn 1818–1891 taken circa 1854 with later CDV issue probably circa 1870s. Albumen print mounted on card; sitter identified in print beneath image. Standard carte-de-visite format approximately 2½ x 4 inches. Excellent contrast with light surface wear. Seated three-quarter portrait of Nightingale in dark silk dress with white collar hands folded over a paper posed beside an upholstered Victorian chair. The image derives from a sitting arranged in London with William Edward Kilburn one of Britain’s early professional photographers and a former daguerreotypist who gained fame by exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851. By the early 1850s Kilburn had established a reputation for photographing members of the aristocracy and prominent public figures.

The Nightingale sitting happened shortly before her departure for the Crimea in October 1854 at a moment when her name was just entering the public press. The portrait predates her full transformation into the national icon later known as the “Lady with the Lamp.†Unlike later more romanticized images Kilburn’s photograph presents a composed unsentimental likeness more consistent with standard portraiture practices than her later photographs. Following Nightingale’s wartime service at Scutari 1854–1856 and the subsequent surge of public acclaim Kilburn’s image became the primary photographic source from which engravings lithographs and later carte-de-visite reproductions were made.1

1 Denis Pellerin “Florence Nightingale: The Mystery Behind Her Iconic Photographs†The Classic November 15 2020 https://theclassicphotomag.com/florence-nightingale-the-mysteries-behind-her-iconic-photographs/ accessed February 27 2026. unknown‎

‎[Women] [Massachusetts] [Boston Brahmin] [Photography]‎

‎Photograph Album of roughly 1400 Pictures Taken by a Young Woman with a Connection to the Cabot Family of Boston Showing a Modern Eye for Composition Circa 1930‎

‎Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures.

The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk’s torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads “Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930â€. Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston’s storied upper class. unknown‎

This independent photography school taught limited-enrolment classes by its co-founders Tomatsu Shomei Moriyama Daido Araki Nobuyushi Hosoe Eikoh Fukase Masahisa and Yokosuka Noriaki. Each photographer taught a workshop for a period of one year with a strong emphasis on one-to-one teacher-student relationships. During the first year Nakahira Takuma and Narahara Ikko also taught two additional two-month courses. The journal actively explored new trends in photography through essays and criticism by members of the group and others. Issue 4 was edited by Araki and was based on the simple theme of 'making photography' for this issue he contributed an essay on how to shoot good portraits. Issue 6 was the most controversial issue published in January 1976 which announced 'We Will Sell Photographs: An Exhibition of Photographs Selected by Twelve Photographers' which was issued to accompany an exhibition in February 1976 as an attempt to present photographs as commodities. At that time in Japan as elsewhere sales of photographs as works of art were virtually non-existent and there was some resistance to the idea most notably from Norio Asaki in Asahi Camera.

The Workshop Photography School lasted from April 1974 until March 1976 but one last journal issue was issued in July 1976. This eighth issue featured 'A Roundtable Discussion with Names Withdrawn: Bashing Photography Magazines' in which the Workshop teachers set about challenging the conventional views of photography put forward by Asahi Camera and other photography magazines as well as criticising popular photographers including Kitai Kazuo and Shinoyama Kishin.

The school continued briefly as Araki's Private Photo School until 1977 when Araki offered another one-year workshop. The Workshop Photography School paved the way for several independent galleries and organisations that followed such as Image Shop Camp Photo Gallery Prism and Photo Gallery Put.
For a New World to Come 354-358. ‎THE GRAY'S HARBOR TOOTHPICK‎

‎A black-and-white photograph of the Gray's Harbor Toothpick a unique exhibit offered by the state of Washington for the 1904 World's Fair held in St. Louis. The "toothpick" began as a 270-foot-tall Drummond Spruce that was growing in a forest near Aberdeen and was estimated to be 440 years old. It was donated by Weyerheauser Timber company. After being moved from the forest a 38-foot section of the log was hollowed out and mounted on two flat railroad cars. In the hollowed-out trunk an office was set up along with an animal den used to house two Washington bears. Another section of the log was fitted with living accommodations for the people hired to transport it on a tour of the United States with a final stop in St. Louis.

The photographer of the 10" x 4" image is unknown. It has remnants of black paper on the verso as if it was removed from an album; otherwise very good. unknown‎

‎N.p. n.d. s.i. Octavo 23cm. Printed buff wrappers; 32pp all halftone photographic reproductions. Mild external creasing and soil; pencil note to front cover "from Leslie / Sept 11th 1932"; another faint pencil annotation to rear wrapper indecipherable; else clean and unmarked Very Good.

Reproduces thirty official U.S. War Department and Signal Corps photographs all being battlefield photos of atrocities from the European theatre in WW1. Most are extremely graphic images of dead and mutilated soldiers the only text being brief captions providing sardonic commentary: "Abandoned;" "Decapitated;" "Asphyxiated;" "Where Children Played;" "The Price They Paid" etc. Issued without date or attribution nor has our research uncovered any definitive bibliographical data but the pamphlet was clearly intended to generate anti-war sentiment. Date uncertain; most OCLC records suggest a 1920s date but we suspect the pamphlet was issued later probably around the penciled date on front cover to discourage further American entanglements in the European conflict then just predictable on the far horizon. unknown‎

‎Toronto Ontario Canada: Photographer Not Identified 1917. First Edition. Original Photograph on Mount. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring 7.5" x 9.5" mounted on its original heavy card mat to an overall size of 13.75" x 11.75". Bears a printed label identifying the unit: "No. 2 PLATOON / SCHOOL OF INFANTRY / APRIL 3RD 1917" and its instructors "LIEUT. J. L. LEWIS MAJOR H. H. MADILL SRGT.-MAJOR T. RANSOM." A superb period ink inscription in the lower margin makes this a highly unique presentation copy: "To Lieut. Col. Le Pan / C.O. School of Infantry / Toronto Ont. / April 10th 1917."

A remarkable and historically significant group portrait of Canadian officers and NCOs taken on the home front in the midst of the First World War. The photograph is staged on the steps of the iconic Norman-Romanesque entrance to University College at the University of Toronto which served as a central hub for the Canadian Officers Training Corps C.O.T.C. and other military training schools for the Canadian Expeditionary Force C.E.F. The men pictured were part of an advanced "School of Infantry" learning the brutal arts of trench warfare and command before being sent to the front.

The photograph's date is especially notable: dated April 3rd 1917 the portrait was captured a mere six days before the launch of the Battle of Vimy Ridge April 9 1917. It captures a moment of intense final preparation on the home front as the men completed their training at the very same time their compatriots in France were moving into position for Canada's most defining battle of the war.

Inscribed to Lieut. Col. A.D. Le Pan. The recipient Lieut. Col. Arthur D'Orr Le Pan 1885-1976 was the C.O. of the School of Infantry and a major figure at the University. An engineer and the university's Assistant Superintendent of Buildings he oversaw the C.O.T.C. program which trained thousands of officers. Later in 1917 he would command the Polish Army Camp at Niagara-on-the-Lake a service for which he was later decorated by the French and Polish governments.

Instructor Major H. H. Madill: One of the named instructors Major Henry Harrison Madill 1889-1988 was a Toronto architect who served overseas. After the war he would have a distinguished academic career at the University of Toronto eventually becoming the Dean of the School of Architecture.

A rare and personal artifact connecting the C.E.F.'s training infrastructure the University of Toronto's immense wartime contribution two highly significant Canadian officers and the eve of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The silver gelatin print retains exceptional clarity and full tonal range. The original embossed mat is in very good condition with some light soiling and minor wear to the corners. The inscription is clear and bold. Bears a detailed white inscription along the bottom identifying the unit and its command. The caption reads: "No. 4 SQUADRON. FROM FEB. 21ST TO MARCH 18TH 1942. NO. 6 M. DEPOT. TORONTO MARCH 18th 1942." It proceeds to list the N.C.O.s and Officers of the squadron including: "Cpl. UGLOW" "CPL. GRINKE" "CPL. HUNTER" "A/S/O. GODDARD" "A/S/O/ MACDONALDE" "S/O. COLLIER" "A/S/O. CAMERON" "Sgt. RITCHIE" "CPL. LONG" and "CPL. MILLIGAN." An exceptional and historically important photograph documenting one of the very first cohorts of women to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. The unit is definitively identified as the R.C.A.F. Women's Division by the unique rank structure detailed in the caption. The ranks "A/S/O." Acting Section Officer and "S/O." Section Officer were officer designations used exclusively by the R.C.A.F. WD and were not present in the Army CWAC or Naval WRENS services. The unit pictured No. 6 Manning Depot "No. 6 M. Depot" in Toronto served as the primary basic training centre for all R.C.A.F. Women's Division recruits in Eastern Canada. The "WDs" as they were colloquially known were officially authorized in July 1941 and No. 6 Manning Depot itself opened in October 1941. This March 1942 graduating class therefore represents perhaps the absolute vanguard of the service - true pioneers who were among the first women in Canadian history to go through military basic training. The panoramic image captures the new recruits of No. 4 Squadron and their leadership upon completion of their intensive four-week basic training course running "From Feb. 21st to March 18th". Following graduation the women would have been posted to air bases and training schools across the country serving in dozens of trades and fulfilling the service's famous slogan: "We Serve That Men May Fly." A powerful visual record of the massive mobilization of Canadian women into the armed forces taken at the very beginning of that movement. The photograph retains excellent detail and strong contrast showing some edgewear creasing and surface emulsion cracks particularly to the right and left margins although the primary image content of the women remains clear and strong. A significant and rare visual artifact of Canadian women's military history. Good.

R.C.A.F. (Women's Division) [Photographer Unidentified] unknown‎
