[SOVIET UNION] [PHOTOGRAPHY] RODCHENKO, Alexandr
Moscow
Moscow and Leningrad: State Art Publishers 1939. No Edition Stated. Quarto. 26cm. Publisher's ribbed maroon leatherette with the title embossed in gilt to the front board gilt decoration to spine. Approx 250pp.Some wear and rubbing to the extremities most noticeable at the spine ends strong robust and handsome internally clean a very good smart looking copy. Complete with the two tipped in fold-out panoramas of historical renderings of Moscow intended to allow readers to compare the vibrant new Moscow to the less streamlined and progressive city of the past.

With photography by Rodchenko during a period when he was more concerned with painting and text by his wife Vavara Stepanova this volume of stridently energetic images of Moscow Muscovites and the general beauty and order of the urban jewel of the Soviet Union was created for the New York World's Fair of 1939. This use of Rodchenko's photography occured during a time when criticism of his work as being 'too aesthetic' and not adequately serving the cause of Socialist Realism was causing him some professional and political problems. His desire "to search inquisitively for new riches in the language of photography" frequently put him in a position where the taking of a photograph that fulfilled his artistic requirements placed him at odds with the artistic requirements of the Soviet artistic monolith or at least the monolith it aspired to represent.
No expense seems to have been spared for this volume and no publicity trope of Soviet Reality tm seems to have been overlooked; from clean streets and punctual public transport to racks of healthy babies in a Moscow maternity ward and laughing children behind the scenes at the State Theatre. Access is given to the production lines of the mighty factories of the Soviet industrial behemoth with special emphasis on the way in which the workers of the USSR are encouraged to streamline and develop their own working methods and procedures with the aim of constantly striving to increase productivity and labor output. Workers are smiling proud and uniformly enthusiastic schoolchildren are clean and respectful and avidly consuming Pushkin at age 7 and the rest of the world looks grubby cluttered and chaotic in comparison which was presumably the idea. Impressive somewhat awe inspiring and from a 21st century perspective rather grim considering the carnage and chaos that was about to overwhelm the world. Fairly well represented in institutions with some visible gaps clean tidy copies can be elusive. KARASIK: The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941. Pages 464-465. State Art Publishers unknown

[SOVIET UNION] [PHOTOGRAPHY - COLLECTIVIZATION] Unidentified photographer
СОВКОЗ No.1 ИМ Серго ОрджоникидÑе - ÐКВД - ГРУЗИÐСКОЙ ССР- ТБИЛИСИ 1938 = SOVKHOZ NO. 1 Sergo Ordzhonikidee - NKVD - GEORGIAN SSR - TBILISI 1938. Presentation Photograph Album of a Soviet State Farm Sovkhoz Tblisi 1938
Tblisi: NKVD 1938. A magnificent grand-format presentation album ca 35cm x 42cm bound in full calf with heavy gilt titling to front cover; containing 113 original photographs including 90 large-format gelatin-silver prints most about 22cm x 29cm ca 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" a few slightly larger or smaller; four folding panoramas and 19 smaller-format portraits 10cm x 7cm ca 4-1/2" x 3". Rubbing to covers; mild staining to some of the mounts occasional surface scuffs to photographs; two of the panoramas have mended tears at folds. Overall a complete well-preserved album with the photographs in generally excellent condition. A complete list of captions translated into English is included.

The movement for rural collectivization in the Soviet Union began in earnest in the late 1920s and reached its peak in the mid-1930's under the second Five Year Plan. In every Soviet state hundreds of thousands of rural peasants were moved off their own small holdings and relocated to one of the large collective farms kohlkozy or as here to State-run agricultural factories sovkhozy. State-owned farms like the one portrayed in this album operated under somewhat stricter conditions - in the words of one contemporary observer ".it is perhaps incorrect to speak of 'forced' labor in connection with the sovkhozy.but it is quite reasonable to designate this labor as 'militarized'." The fact that this farm was run by the NKVD the Soviet internal security apparatus means its residents were almost certainly present on a punitive or at least rehabilitative basis: as the agency principally responsible for ferreting out and suppressing counter-revolutionary tendencies among the vast Soviet populace the NKVD would have had little other reason to be involved in the operation of an agricultural enterprise. The use of the sovkhoz as a tool of repression especially in the early days of collectivization is well documented: the collective system was coercive and unwelcome to many if not most of the peasants whom it affected. "What is especially dangerous for the stability of the new agricultural system in Soviet Russia - introduced in such a hurry - is the fact that it was put into effect with coercive methods the system being forced on the peasantry and being accompanied by a cruel campaign against the well-to-do peasantry i.e kulaks quoted from Vladimir Timoshenko "The New Agricultural Policy of Soviet Russia" in Journal of Farm Economics v.13 no.2 April 1931.

To counter some of the negative views of collectivization a large-scale propaganda campaign was initiated and some of the leading Soviet photographers of the period including Georgy Petrusov Evgeny Khaldei V. Teterin Ivan Shagin Arkady Shaikhet among others were employed to present an idealized version of life on the collective farms. The current album clearly intended to convey this sense of the rural ideal was likely produced by the Directors of the Sovkhoz Sergo Ordzhonikidze named ironically for a one-time ally of Stalin's who had been assassinated in the Great Purge for presentation to a regional state official. In more than 100 hand-captioned images the album portrays every aspect of the enterprise from fields of dairy cattle to chicken hatcheries to leisure-hour activities. The workers are uniformly happy and well-fed their surroundings ideally pastoral the machinery clean new and efficient. One can only speculate what conditions prevailed in the absence of a photographer's lens.

The photographs themselves are clearly professional: technically and compositionally sophisticated they are exemplars of the form produced in an era when the Soviets had raised the photographic arts to a high level in service to their considerable propaganda needs. Of particular interest are numerous interior photographs documenting industrial activities at the farm - maintenance of the boiler rooms and garages; canning operations; the blacksmith's shop etc: even though staged these are extraordinary photographs of a depth and quality one would associate with the flagship Soviet photographic magazines of the period and there were several the most prominent being Sovetskoe Foto which ran from 1926-1977 and USSR in Construction 1930-1941.

Despite our belief that these images were likely the work of one of the prominent Soviet photo-documentarians of the period attempts to match the images to a known photographer have proved fruitless. Of the names listed above these images most resemble the work of Evgeny Khaldei who would become famous for his photojournalism during the Second World War; but we find no evidence within the album attributing the work to him or any other photographer. Nonetheless a valuable documentation of pre-War Soviet agricultural life and a quite remarkable collection of images. unknown

[Sri Lanka; Photography; C A & Co]
Cingalese Family Portrait. Albumen photograph from the Colombo Apothecaries Company
1895. Good overall. Large albumen photograph depicting a Cingalese Ceylon family consisting of a grandfather father and young daughter all dressed in their finest. The young father holds a cloth parasol. The young daughter about 6 or 7 years old already is wearing fine gold ornaments including necklaces nose ring and earrings.

"Colombo Apothecaries Company was established by J. Smith Finlay and W.M. Smith in Colombo Ceylon in 1883. From a small mercantile establishment the Company grew rapidly into a large general store selling most commodities. The name Colombo Apothecaries Company was established in 1892 and by this time already had a photographic department. As an expansion of this department the company acquired the negatives of Charles Scowen Company and moved their studio to Kandy where the climate was considered better for photographic work than Colombo. After the acquisition of the Scowen portfolio the Colombo Apothecaries Company produced a fine catalogue and started selling their photographs worldwide". Our thanks to Palinda de Silva for the above information.

This is just such an intimate portrait with the grandfather at the right slightly blurred as if he moved during a long exposure.

A good bright image some light creasing and a little chipped at edges otherwise good condition. Large photo 8 1/4 x 10 1/2" hardcover

[Sri Lanka; Photography] [Karl Lewis, photographer]
Photo album of a British Businessman's life in Ceylon with 3 Hong Kong Silvertone photos
1920. Hardcover. Very good overall. An interesting photograph album of about 88 photographs compiled by an unknown British businessman who visits Hong Kong Colombo & wider Ceylon. He visits Hong Kong as a bachelor and here there are several amusing snapshots of men in kimonos some parading with parasols. Arriving in Ceylon the businessman seems to have been involved with either rubber or coconut plantations. He appears to marry in Ceylon. There are also 13 vernacular shots of Colombo buildings and people including a lovely Sri Lankan woman and a Chinese street seller. There is a charming image of a young coolie asleep on the bottom rung of his rickshaw. A group of 4 photos show a large white ship from various angles includes one of the captain looking at native boats alongside by photographer Karl Lewis possibly related to the Great White Fleet. Then a group of personal family portraits and one of the Forth Bridge in Scotland.

Lewis was an interesting photographer of the last century. Born in Kentucky in 1865 he started as a dock worker and eventually took to the sea living all over the world. He settled in Yokohama in 1901 had a common law wife and ran small photographic printing business issuing brochures postcards and covers that were sometimes hand colored. In 1905 his catalog advertised "take any photograph sketch or draw produce 100 elegantly colored postcards for $1.75 including shipping." Over the years he found sailors and the American Navy a popular subject possibly because of sales. His postcards & photographs have become very collectible. See great white fleet website.

Photograph sizes vary 3 ¾ x 4 ¾"; c x 2 ¾"; 6 x 4 ¼";3 ¼ x 4 ¼"; 4 x 5 ¾"; 6 3/8 x 4 ¾". Most images are vernacular some have numbers/letters in the image but no identified photographer other than the Lewis images mentioned above.

Thick oblong photograph album 11 ¾ x 9 ½ x 2 ½". Green two-tone cloth covers with thick album board varying between brown gray and dark green backing the photographs. Boards a bit speckled corners rubbed and a bit marked but firmly bound.

An interesting vernacular album of Sri Lanka and the course of this man's life. hardcover

[Texas Revolution]: [Photography]
Large-Format Photograph Picturing the Last Reunion of the Final Five Survivors of the Battle of San Jacinto Posed with Colonel Fannin's Goliad Cannon and a Large Texas State Flag
Houston: Nelson Art Studio 1906. About good. Albumen photograph 9.25 x 7.25 inches on a printed studio mount measuring 14 x 11 inches. Substantial rubbing and soiling to printed mount with some loss of printed text top two corners chipped right corner chip costing a few words of text. Extremities of photograph worn and a bit chipped with some soiling to the image area. Overall a battered but charming survivor. A stunning original photograph of the final five survivors of the crescendo of the Texas Revolution the Battle of San Jacinto on a detailed printed mount which provides important information on the subjects. These five Texian veterans are all identified in the printed caption at the bottom. From left to right they are: William Physick Zuber of Austin John Washington Darling of Taylor Stephen Franklin Sparks of Rockport Levi T. Lawlor or Lawler of Florence and Alfonso or Alphonso Steele of Mexia. Each man's age is listed as well. The latter man Alfonso Steele was the last surviving participant in the battle when he died in 1911. Zuber stretches the Texas flag out from the flag staff while the other four men sit or stand at right facing the camera. One of the veterans sits on the cannon used by Colonel James Fannin at Goliad. The photograph was taken at the final annual meeting of the Texas Veterans Association on April 21 1906 the seventieth anniversary of the battle.

According to the online Portal to Texas History: "The Texas Veterans Association an organization of those who had served prior to during and immediately after the Texas Revolution held its first convention in Houston on May 13-15 1873 with about seventy-five veterans present. After 1876 the annual meetings held in some seventeen different Texas cities always took place in the week including April 21 San Jacinto Day. The association dissolved in Austin on April 19 1907 during its thirty-fifth annual convention. With its dissolution its work was taken over by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas."

The present card mount containing the photograph is printed with important information on all four sides though some of the information at the top has been chipped away. We would prefer to know the handful of missing words but we cannot find another example of this photograph on the same mount for comparison. Still the heading of the photograph identifies the subjects as survivors of General Sam Houston's Army from the Battle of San Jacinto fought April 21 1836. The caption in the left margin states that "This Picture Was Taken at Their Last Reunion. They Have Resolved Never to Meet Again Being Too Old to Travel. This Picture Can Be Had for One Dollar. Address V.C Terry Houston Texas General Delivery." A few words in the right margin are obscured but can be easily inferred: "These are the Remnant of General Houston's Army. Five Living Out of Six Hundred and Eighty-Six Who Captured Santa Ana and His Murderers Twenty Miles Below Houston." The last portion of text below the identifying captions at bottom addresses the other Texas war relic in the photograph: "This is Colonel Fannin's Cannon at the Massacre near Goliad where Two Hundred and Eighty Men Were Shot Next Day Two Weeks After the Fall of the Alamo."

The present photograph is decidedly rare but not completely unknown. The only other version of the image we can locate measures roughly the same size but includes a sixth Texas veteran named Asa Collinsworth Hill who holds the flag staff but was not part of Houston's forces during the Revolution and is affixed to a different printed mount with identifying captions for the veterans but with a simple title reading "Veterans of the Mexican War -- 1836" above two lines of poetry. This other version contains a photo credit and copyright notice from C.A. Major of Goliad who apparently took the original photograph at the reunion.

The present example pictures only the five surviving veterans of San Jacinto is affixed to a much more verbose printed mount with a blindstamp in the center of the bottom margin credited to Nelson Art Studio in Houston. Curiously Asa Hill may have been removed from the middle of this version of the photograph through photographic development methods. In any case these are the only two versions of this photograph we can find. We locate examples of the six-man version on the simpler mount at the Bee County Historical Commission in Beeville with an image hosted by the University of North Texas's Portal to Texas History the Texas State Library and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library which may own more than one copy. We have been unable to locate any other examples of the present photograph on the same printed mount as seen here. This somehow appropriately-wounded photographic relic featuring the heroes of the Texas Revolution should positively sing to collectors of Texas history. Nelson Art Studio unknown
