[SCULPTURE] JONCHERY (Charles Emile).

[South Dakota]. [Photography]
Two Annotated Photographs of Early Groton South Dakota
N.p. likely Groton SD: October 1885. Very good. Two mounted albumen photographs 5.5 x 8.25 inches on 8-x-10-inch plain cardstock. Small chip to bottom edge of each mount some edge wear dust-soiling and rubbing. A highly-informative pair of original photographs of two different areas of Groton South Dakota just four years after its founding each identified in the lower margin both taken in October 1885 both from a slight elevation and each with numerous manuscript captions in the margins identifying various locations in the images. The first photograph pictures "Central Part of Groton. October 1885." Manuscript captions point to the bank post office "Trinity Church" the Presbyterian Church "Presbyterian Parsonage" and an "X" on the Brunswick Hotel identifying "Will's room formerly at the hotel." The second photograph is titled "Northern Part of Groton Dakota. In Oct. 1885." Among the buildings identified here are "Will's home" "School house" "New College Buildings" "Bank Building" and the location of Main Street. Each photograph pictures many more buildings than are identified through the captions and juxtapose the town's collection of buildings against a wide and empty prairie beyond. Together the photographs provide a rare and early city view of the still-remote city of Groton located in the north-eastern part of South Dakota and numbering just 1380 residents as of the 2020 census. October unknown

[SOVIET UNION] [PHOTOGRAPHY]
Commemorative Photo Album of the 50th Anniversary of the Russian Revolution
Druskininkai Lithuania 1968. Large oblong folio 30x41.50cm.; commemorative postbound photo album of brown blind-embossed cloth; 29 grey card leaves to which are mounted 30 original photographs measuring ca.15x24cm or the inverse to 30x24cm all captioned in neat manuscript Russian though the opening statement on front pastedown in manuscript Lithuanian of the same hand. Corners a bit bumped pastedown endpapers starting to peel from boards light occasional soil to leaves else Very Good the photographs all in fine condition. Collection of neatly compiled but rather amateurish photographs taken during the 50th anniversary of the Russian Revolution celebration in the Lithuanian spa town of Druskininkai featuring members of both the military the Young Leninists Komsomol and the Pioneers. The earliest photos show the visit of Anna Vasil'evna mother of the fallen hero Petr Naboichenko at the company with which he served her face shown weeping before an oversized portrait of her son. Vasil'evna reappears in one more photograph towards the end of the album sitting in a classroom surrounded by listeners as she wipes her eyes with a handkerchief. The photos also depict the march to the burial place of Naboichenko at which is held a rally of soldiers and members of the Pioneers in memory of those who fell during the liberation of Druskininkai. Other photos show members of the party in an empty field "the site of a fierce battle" our translation. The final photographs promote the importance of the press as a man in military uniform reads from the day's newspaper to a small cluster of soldiers some of them looking as young as fourteen. The final photo taken at the evening's banquet show a four-man military band on maracas bass accordion and guitar the caption describing them as the prizewinners of a televised competition. Kind thanks to our colleague Dr. Joseph Kellner for his assistance in the translating and cataloging of this item. unknown

[SOVIET UNION] [PHOTOGRAPHY] RODCHENKO, Alexandr
Moscow
Moscow and Leningrad: State Art Publishers 1939. No Edition Stated. Quarto. 26cm. Publisher's ribbed maroon leatherette with the title embossed in gilt to the front board gilt decoration to spine. Approx 250pp.Some wear and rubbing to the extremities most noticeable at the spine ends strong robust and handsome internally clean a very good smart looking copy. Complete with the two tipped in fold-out panoramas of historical renderings of Moscow intended to allow readers to compare the vibrant new Moscow to the less streamlined and progressive city of the past.

With photography by Rodchenko during a period when he was more concerned with painting and text by his wife Vavara Stepanova this volume of stridently energetic images of Moscow Muscovites and the general beauty and order of the urban jewel of the Soviet Union was created for the New York World's Fair of 1939. This use of Rodchenko's photography occured during a time when criticism of his work as being 'too aesthetic' and not adequately serving the cause of Socialist Realism was causing him some professional and political problems. His desire "to search inquisitively for new riches in the language of photography" frequently put him in a position where the taking of a photograph that fulfilled his artistic requirements placed him at odds with the artistic requirements of the Soviet artistic monolith or at least the monolith it aspired to represent.
No expense seems to have been spared for this volume and no publicity trope of Soviet Reality tm seems to have been overlooked; from clean streets and punctual public transport to racks of healthy babies in a Moscow maternity ward and laughing children behind the scenes at the State Theatre. Access is given to the production lines of the mighty factories of the Soviet industrial behemoth with special emphasis on the way in which the workers of the USSR are encouraged to streamline and develop their own working methods and procedures with the aim of constantly striving to increase productivity and labor output. Workers are smiling proud and uniformly enthusiastic schoolchildren are clean and respectful and avidly consuming Pushkin at age 7 and the rest of the world looks grubby cluttered and chaotic in comparison which was presumably the idea. Impressive somewhat awe inspiring and from a 21st century perspective rather grim considering the carnage and chaos that was about to overwhelm the world. Fairly well represented in institutions with some visible gaps clean tidy copies can be elusive. KARASIK: The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941. Pages 464-465. State Art Publishers unknown

1938 = SOVKHOZ NO. 1 Sergo Ordzhonikidee - NKVD - GEORGIAN SSR - TBILISI 1938. Presentation Photograph Album of a Soviet State Farm Sovkhoz Tblisi 1938
Tblisi: NKVD 1938. A magnificent grand-format presentation album ca 35cm x 42cm bound in full calf with heavy gilt titling to front cover; containing 113 original photographs including 90 large-format gelatin-silver prints most about 22cm x 29cm ca 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" a few slightly larger or smaller; four folding panoramas and 19 smaller-format portraits 10cm x 7cm ca 4-1/2" x 3". Rubbing to covers; mild staining to some of the mounts occasional surface scuffs to photographs; two of the panoramas have mended tears at folds. Overall a complete well-preserved album with the photographs in generally excellent condition. A complete list of captions translated into English is included.

The movement for rural collectivization in the Soviet Union began in earnest in the late 1920s and reached its peak in the mid-1930's under the second Five Year Plan. In every Soviet state hundreds of thousands of rural peasants were moved off their own small holdings and relocated to one of the large collective farms kohlkozy or as here to State-run agricultural factories sovkhozy. State-owned farms like the one portrayed in this album operated under somewhat stricter conditions – in the words of one contemporary observer ".it is perhaps incorrect to speak of 'forced' labor in connection with the sovkhozy.but it is quite reasonable to designate this labor as 'militarized'." The fact that this farm was run by the NKVD the Soviet internal security apparatus means its residents were almost certainly present on a punitive or at least rehabilitative basis: as the agency principally responsible for ferreting out and suppressing counter-revolutionary tendencies among the vast Soviet populace the NKVD would have had little other reason to be involved in the operation of an agricultural enterprise. The use of the sovkhoz as a tool of repression especially in the early days of collectivization is well documented: the collective system was coercive and unwelcome to many if not most of the peasants whom it affected. "What is especially dangerous for the stability of the new agricultural system in Soviet Russia – introduced in such a hurry – is the fact that it was put into effect with coercive methods the system being forced on the peasantry and being accompanied by a cruel campaign against the well-to-do peasantry i.e kulaks quoted from Vladimir Timoshenko "The New Agricultural Policy of Soviet Russia" in Journal of Farm Economics v.13 no.2 April 1931.

To counter some of the negative views of collectivization a large-scale propaganda campaign was initiated and some of the leading Soviet photographers of the period including Georgy Petrusov Evgeny Khaldei V. Teterin Ivan Shagin Arkady Shaikhet among others were employed to present an idealized version of life on the collective farms. The current album clearly intended to convey this sense of the rural ideal was likely produced by the Directors of the Sovkhoz Sergo Ordzhonikidze named ironically for a one-time ally of Stalin's who had been assassinated in the Great Purge for presentation to a regional state official. In more than 100 hand-captioned images the album portrays every aspect of the enterprise from fields of dairy cattle to chicken hatcheries to leisure-hour activities. The workers are uniformly happy and well-fed their surroundings ideally pastoral the machinery clean new and efficient. One can only speculate what conditions prevailed in the absence of a photographer's lens.

The photographs themselves are clearly professional: technically and compositionally sophisticated they are exemplars of the form produced in an era when the Soviets had raised the photographic arts to a high level in service to their considerable propaganda needs. Of particular interest are numerous interior photographs documenting industrial activities at the farm – maintenance of the boiler rooms and garages; canning operations; the blacksmith's shop etc: even though staged these are extraordinary photographs of a depth and quality one would associate with the flagship Soviet photographic magazines of the period and there were several the most prominent being Sovetskoe Foto which ran from 1926-1977 and USSR in Construction 1930-1941.

Despite our belief that these images were likely the work of one of the prominent Soviet photo-documentarians of the period attempts to match the images to a known photographer have proved fruitless. Of the names listed above these images most resemble the work of Evgeny Khaldei who would become famous for his photojournalism during the Second World War; but we find no evidence within the album attributing the work to him or any other photographer. Nonetheless a valuable documentation of pre-War Soviet agricultural life and a quite remarkable collection of images. unknown
