[Walt Disney] [Disneyana] [Wildlife Photography] Algar, James
Walt Disney's African Lion A True-Life Adventure
New York: Simon and Schuster in collaboration with Marc Barraud 1956. Simon and Schuster edition in English. Hardcover. Very Good. 74pp. Quarto 29.5 cm White cloth spine with photographically illustrated paper over boards. Covers rubbed. With tipped-in illustrations all present. Designed by Armand A. Bigle and produced by Marc Barraud from the original French language edition "Walt Disney's Lions d'Afrique."

An account which is not only a biography of the King of Beasts but of all unique wildlife inhabiting his domain. The story first appeared as a True-Life Adventure film and is now presented here in book form. The color photographs were taken by famed Ketchikan wildlife cinematographers and wildlife photographers Alfred and Elma Milotte who spent three years following lions in Africa. The Milottes were first hired by Disney to film the Alaska wilderness. Alfred and Elma created the True-LIfe Adventure series for Walt Disney and won six Academy Awards while working for Disney. The couple married for fifty-five years traveled the world for four decades. They strangely died within a week of each other in 1989.

Walt Disney produced thirteen True-Life Adventure series films in the 1950s. The films were shown in public schools for decades and it is thought that some students were even influenced to go into environmental careers as a result of seeing these films.

"If there is a note of grimness here it stems from reality of life; if there is a touch of humor it comes from the genuineness of rich materials for Nature can be both cruel and kind. both macabre and beguiling. and infinitely eternally strange." - Walt Disney. [Washington State] [Mountaineering] [Vernacular Photography]
CLIMBING OLD BALDY. JULY 1912
Small album containing 12 photographs captured during an ascent of "Old Baldy" which looms majestically above Spokane Washington at 5883 feet. The southernmost mountain in the Selkirk Range it was known as Mount Carlton until August 1912 when it was renamed Mount Spokane.

The images show a party of eight men at the start of their journey and at various points along the way including Sky Line Spring Brickell Creek and the summit. All the photographs are accompanied by holographic captions and two are identified as the work of Joe Shields. Notably there is an image of Cook's Camp and a portrait of Francis H. Cook.

A pioneering figure in Spokane's history Cook 1851-1920 published the city's first newspaper The Spokan Times before setting his sights on developing an area on Spokane's South Hill. He purchased 680 acres and platted it out for development and in 1888 started the first steam-powered street railroad to move residents up and down the hill. Later Cook purchased the top of Old Baldy and set about securing the rights of way in order to build a road to the summit. Though he did not live to see it his vision was realized with the establishment of the Mt. Spokane State Park in 1927.

The photographs are pasted to leaves of an oblong album which is bound with string in brown paper wrappers 8 1/2" x 5 1/4". The front panel features black titles and an original white ink and watercolor rendering of Old Baldy framed by tall trees. Some mild edgewear; else very good. unknown

This independent photography school taught limited-enrolment classes by its co-founders Tomatsu Shomei Moriyama Daido Araki Nobuyushi Hosoe Eikoh Fukase Masahisa and Yokosuka Noriaki. Each photographer taught a workshop for a period of one year with a strong emphasis on one-to-one teacher-student relationships. During the first year Nakahira Takuma and Narahara Ikko also taught two additional two-month courses. The journal actively explored new trends in photography through essays and criticism by members of the group and others. Issue 4 was edited by Araki and was based on the simple theme of 'making photography' for this issue he contributed an essay on how to shoot good portraits. Issue 6 was the most controversial issue published in January 1976 which announced 'We Will Sell Photographs: An Exhibition of Photographs Selected by Twelve Photographers' which was issued to accompany an exhibition in February 1976 as an attempt to present photographs as commodities. At that time in Japan as elsewhere sales of photographs as works of art were virtually non-existent and there was some resistance to the idea most notably from Norio Asaki in Asahi Camera.

The Workshop Photography School lasted from April 1974 until March 1976 but one last journal issue was issued in July 1976. This eighth issue featured 'A Roundtable Discussion with Names Withdrawn: Bashing Photography Magazines' in which the Workshop teachers set about challenging the conventional views of photography put forward by Asahi Camera and other photography magazines as well as criticising popular photographers including Kitai Kazuo and Shinoyama Kishin.

The school continued briefly as Araki's Private Photo School until 1977 when Araki offered another one-year workshop. The Workshop Photography School paved the way for several independent galleries and organisations that followed such as Image Shop Camp Photo Gallery Prism and Photo Gallery Put.
For a New World to Come 354-358. [World War II] : [Photography] : [Military Intelligence]
Prints from Partially Burned Negatives Seized from a Japanese Soldier
Japan ca. 1944. 16 black and white silver print photographs. Dimensions range from approximately 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" to approximately 5" x 3 3/4." Two with ink notations to versos. All about fine.

A remarkable group of original photographs developed from partially burnt negatives confiscated from Japanese forces on Saipan during World War II.

These were acquired by us from a dealer in militaria who identifies them as sourced from the estate of an American GI serving with the 881st Bombardment Squadron 500th Bomb Group which flew missions out of Saipan following its capture by Allied forces in July of 1944.

Two prints have neatly printed captions to their versos:

"Captured Jap Film: / Army family sent too Siapian sic before War. Cheerful looking lot. The black part is where the Japs tried to burn the film."

"Jap officers and Geisha girls. Rough customers - / Captured film."

The burnt film surrounds often banal though occasionally menacing images ranging from what appear to be everyday gatherings to a startling street scene of soldiers with bayonets seemingly trained on a small child. The effect is captivating and the group a powerful physical relic with relation not limited to military intelligence censorship and manipulated photography. unknown

THE GRAY'S HARBOR TOOTHPICK
A black-and-white photograph of the Gray's Harbor Toothpick a unique exhibit offered by the state of Washington for the 1904 World's Fair held in St. Louis. The "toothpick" began as a 270-foot-tall Drummond Spruce that was growing in a forest near Aberdeen and was estimated to be 440 years old. It was donated by Weyerheauser Timber company. After being moved from the forest a 38-foot section of the log was hollowed out and mounted on two flat railroad cars. In the hollowed-out trunk an office was set up along with an animal den used to house two Washington bears. Another section of the log was fitted with living accommodations for the people hired to transport it on a tour of the United States with a final stop in St. Louis.

The photographer of the 10" x 4" image is unknown. It has remnants of black paper on the verso as if it was removed from an album; otherwise very good. unknown

[WWI / PHOTOGRAPHY / MILITARY HISTORY / UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO]; Henry Harrison Madill (1889-1988); Arthur D'Orr LePan (1885-1976
No. 2 Platoon School of Infantry April 3rd 1917: Original World War I Presentation Photograph Inscribed to the Commanding Officer Lieut. Col. A. D. Le Pan
Toronto Ontario Canada: Photographer Not Identified 1917. First Edition. Original Photograph on Mount. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring 7.5" x 9.5" mounted on its original heavy card mat to an overall size of 13.75" x 11.75". Bears a printed label identifying the unit: "No. 2 PLATOON / SCHOOL OF INFANTRY / APRIL 3RD 1917" and its instructors "LIEUT. J. L. LEWIS MAJOR H. H. MADILL SRGT.-MAJOR T. RANSOM." A superb period ink inscription in the lower margin makes this a highly unique presentation copy: "To Lieut. Col. Le Pan / C.O. School of Infantry / Toronto Ont. / April 10th 1917."

A remarkable and historically significant group portrait of Canadian officers and NCOs taken on the home front in the midst of the First World War. The photograph is staged on the steps of the iconic Norman-Romanesque entrance to University College at the University of Toronto which served as a central hub for the Canadian Officers Training Corps C.O.T.C. and other military training schools for the Canadian Expeditionary Force C.E.F. The men pictured were part of an advanced "School of Infantry" learning the brutal arts of trench warfare and command before being sent to the front.

The photograph's date is especially notable: dated April 3rd 1917 the portrait was captured a mere six days before the launch of the Battle of Vimy Ridge April 9 1917. It captures a moment of intense final preparation on the home front as the men completed their training at the very same time their compatriots in France were moving into position for Canada's most defining battle of the war.

Inscribed to Lieut. Col. A.D. Le Pan. The recipient Lieut. Col. Arthur D'Orr Le Pan 1885-1976 was the C.O. of the School of Infantry and a major figure at the University. An engineer and the university's Assistant Superintendent of Buildings he oversaw the C.O.T.C. program which trained thousands of officers. Later in 1917 he would command the Polish Army Camp at Niagara-on-the-Lake a service for which he was later decorated by the French and Polish governments.

Instructor Major H. H. Madill: One of the named instructors Major Henry Harrison Madill 1889-1988 was a Toronto architect who served overseas. After the war he would have a distinguished academic career at the University of Toronto eventually becoming the Dean of the School of Architecture.

A rare and personal artifact connecting the C.E.F.'s training infrastructure the University of Toronto's immense wartime contribution two highly significant Canadian officers and the eve of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The silver gelatin print retains exceptional clarity and full tonal range. The original embossed mat is in very good condition with some light soiling and minor wear to the corners. The inscription is clear and bold. Very Good.

Photographer Not Identified unknown

[WWII / RCAF. (WOMEN'S DIVISION) / PHOTOGRAPHY / TORONTO] R. C. A. F.
We Serve That Men May Fly": No. 4 Squadron R.C.A.F. Women's Division No. 6 Manning Depot Toronto - March 18 1942
Toronto Ontario Canada: R.C.A.F. Women's Division Photographer Unidentified 1942. Original Photograph. Original silver gelatin photograph long panoramic format measuring 17" x 7". Bears a detailed white inscription along the bottom identifying the unit and its command. The caption reads: "No. 4 SQUADRON. FROM FEB. 21ST TO MARCH 18TH 1942. NO. 6 M. DEPOT. TORONTO MARCH 18th 1942." It proceeds to list the N.C.O.s and Officers of the squadron including: "Cpl. UGLOW" "CPL. GRINKE" "CPL. HUNTER" "A/S/O. GODDARD" "A/S/O/ MACDONALDE" "S/O. COLLIER" "A/S/O. CAMERON" "Sgt. RITCHIE" "CPL. LONG" and "CPL. MILLIGAN." An exceptional and historically important photograph documenting one of the very first cohorts of women to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. The unit is definitively identified as the R.C.A.F. Women's Division by the unique rank structure detailed in the caption. The ranks "A/S/O." Acting Section Officer and "S/O." Section Officer were officer designations used exclusively by the R.C.A.F. WD and were not present in the Army CWAC or Naval WRENS services. The unit pictured No. 6 Manning Depot "No. 6 M. Depot" in Toronto served as the primary basic training centre for all R.C.A.F. Women's Division recruits in Eastern Canada. The "WDs" as they were colloquially known were officially authorized in July 1941 and No. 6 Manning Depot itself opened in October 1941. This March 1942 graduating class therefore represents perhaps the absolute vanguard of the service - true pioneers who were among the first women in Canadian history to go through military basic training. The panoramic image captures the new recruits of No. 4 Squadron and their leadership upon completion of their intensive four-week basic training course running "From Feb. 21st to March 18th". Following graduation the women would have been posted to air bases and training schools across the country serving in dozens of trades and fulfilling the service's famous slogan: "We Serve That Men May Fly." A powerful visual record of the massive mobilization of Canadian women into the armed forces taken at the very beginning of that movement. The photograph retains excellent detail and strong contrast showing some edgewear creasing and surface emulsion cracks particularly to the right and left margins although the primary image content of the women remains clear and strong. A significant and rare visual artifact of Canadian women's military history. Good.

R.C.A.F. (Women's Division) [Photographer Unidentified] unknown
