Published in 1923 this was a groundbreaking multi-volume work that mapped the spread of Romanesque art along medieval pilgrimage routes arguing these paths weren't just for pilgrims but were conduits for artistic ideas linking France Italy and Spain challenging French-centric views by highlighting broader European cultural exchange through extensive photographs. <br><br>The collection with its vast photographic documentation showed how pilgrimage routes fostered a unified artistic style Romanesque through shared themes and forms profoundly influencing art history by showing an interconnected medieval world.<br><br>In this work Porter demonstrated that pilgrimage routes acted as "highways" for sculptures ideas and motis not just relics. Porter used over 1500 photographs from his archive to visually prove his theories creating a crucial visual record of monuments in their original state. A magnificent work it significantly shaped the study of Romanesque art for decades establishing a new standard for visual documentation and understanding medieval cultural change. <br><br>ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Arthur Kingsley Porter 1883-1933 was a prominent American art historian archaeologist and medievalist famous as Harvard's art history chair a pioneer in Romanesque architecture studies and a wealthy collector who mysteriously vanished from an Irish island in 1933. Known for his groundbreaking work on medieval sculpture and his iconic "Indiana Jones-like" persona he authored significant books left his mansion Elmwood to Harvard and remains a figure of historical fascination due to his disappearance possibly suicide or faked death. Porter was the first American scholar in Romanesque art to gain international renown revolutionizing the study of its sculpture. His 10-volume work "Sculpture of the Pilgrimage Roads" featured his own extensive photographic documentation now a key resource in Harvard's collections.<br><br>ABOUT THIS SET: This matching set is bound in a dark salmon-ish burnt orange cloth. Covers are plain with gilt lettering on each spine. Nine out of ten of these volumes are housed in individual slipcases respectively which hold loose-leaf photographic plates in black and white numbers 1 through 1527 in portfolio-case bindings. Volume I does not have a slipcase but is protected by a glassine wrapper. Each book measures just over 9 inches tall x 7 inches wide with varying thicknesses. On a shelf the set spans 15 inches.<br><br>- Volume I: Text. Volume is in two parts with the following contents: Part I Cluny: The Chronological Problem; The Eleventh Century; Early Spanish Ivories; Santo Domingo de Silos; The Bari Throne; Cluny; The Diffusion of Cluniac Art in Burgundy; and The Diffusion of Cluniac Art Outside of Burgundy. Catalonia and Aragon. Loose-leaf plates 513-636.<br><br>- Volume VI: Illustrations. Castile Asturias Galicia. Loose-leaf plates 637-895. <br><br>- Volume VII: Illustrations. Western France. Loose-leaf plates 1411-1527. <br><br>CONDITION: All plates are present with the exception of the question of image number 513 noted within the description above within Volume IV. Plates have ever-so-lightly toned yet are unmarked and in lovely condition. The binding of Volume I is tight and textblock unmarked. Its glassine wrapper has mildly chipped along the edges particularly at the head and foot of the spine. Slipcases have an occasional discoloration spot and light shelfware. Other copies indicate they are numbered but we cannot locate a limited edition number within these volumes.
