‎African American Photography‎

‎African American Studio Portraiture and Self-Presentation in the Interwar Period Wallet Photograph Archive ca. 1920s-1930s‎

‎1920. Archive of fourteen small-format studio portrait photographs depicting African American men women and children during the interwar period offering a focused visual record of self-representation dress and identity formation within Black communities in the era of segregation. Produced within commercial studio settings the portraits reflect the role of photography as a means of asserting dignity respectability and participation in modern visual culture at a time when mainstream representations of African Americans were limited and often distorted. The sitters appear in a range of composed poses including formally dressed men in suits and ties-some wearing brimmed hats associated with urban style and aspirational identity-and women presented with direct composed gazes emphasizing self-possession and presentation. Additional images include subjects in more casual or work attire indicating a spectrum of social and occupational identities while maintaining the shared conventions of studio portraiture. Two photographs of children extend the archive across generations underscoring the importance of photographic images within family and community networks.

Fourteen original photographs ca. 1920s-1930s primarily sepia-toned silver gelatin prints with one example featuring hand-colored background elements. Each photograph is small "wallet-size" ranging approximately from 1.25 x 1.25 inches to 2.5 x 1.25 inches. The images are tightly framed consistent with commercial studio production and feature neutral or lightly decorative backdrops. Several subjects appear in multiple poses suggesting a shared studio session or related photographic context. The format indicates intended use as personal keepsakes exchanged portraits or album inserts within kinship and social networks. General wear consistent with age and handling including creasing edge wear and surface abrasions; two images exhibit notable fading and reduced contrast. The remaining photographs retain clear detail and tonal range. Overall condition good. A cohesive vernacular archive documenting African American portrait practices and social identity in the early twentieth century. unknown‎

‎African American Portraiture Tintype of Young Black Woman in Lace Collar Case Photograph Neff Patent 1856‎

‎1856. Neff Hamilton L. tintype portrait circa mid-1850s documents early photographic representation of an African American woman during the formative period of American vernacular portraiture when free Black individuals increasingly participated in studio photography as a means of self-presentation and social visibility. The image situates the sitter within mid-nineteenth-century photographic practice associated with Neff's patented tintype process which expanded access to portraiture beyond elite clientele. The subject's composed seated pose formal dress and direct presentation align with conventions of dignity and respectability that characterized Black studio portraiture in the antebellum and immediate pre-Civil War period.

Ninth plate tintype photograph measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 2 2/3 inches. The image depicts a young African American woman seated with arms crossed in her lap wearing a dress with a lace collar. The plate bears the stamp "Neff's Pat. Feb. 56" along the upper edge indicating production within the period following Hamilton L. Neff's 1856 patent associated with early tintype processes. The photograph is housed in a full wooden case with a gold velvet interior on the opposing side and a gold-toned metallic mat surrounding the image. The portrait is taken at midlevel and presents the sitter against a darkened field consistent with early tintype tonal characteristics.

Tintype photography introduced in the 1850s enabled more affordable and portable portrait production contributing to the broader inclusion of African American subjects in photographic archives during a period otherwise marked by limited formal representation. Portraits such as this one provide visual evidence of self-fashioning dress and studio conventions among Black sitters in the antebellum United States offering material for the study of race identity and visual culture. Image slightly dark with expected tonal depth; case intact with light wear; overall very good condition. unknown‎

‎African American House Servant Photography‎

‎Stereoview of an African American House Servant Holding a Tray‎

‎Albumen stereoview of an African American house servant holding a tray. 6" x 3 1/8". The subject of this photograph is an older African American woman dressed in housemaid attire. She holds a duster upright in one hand. With the other she balances a tray of indiscernible objects on her lap. There is a basket of various spools in the background. This is possibly from George Barnard's "South Carolina Views" series 1873-1880 a collection that focused on Black laborers in the Reconstruction South. Barnard is perhaps most famous for his photographic documentation of Civil War ruination and hardship most of which he captured while under General Sherman's command. This inch picture is in very good condition; it is an fascinating cultural artifact of African-American domestic workers in the postwar South. unknown‎

‎African American Interest Photography‎

‎Archive of photographs and letters regarding a pair of African American twin child actors‎

‎Los Angeles: N.p. 1935. Archive of material regarding a pair of prospective African American child actors including four black and white photographs of the children four autograph letters signed from a "Madame Fay" variously addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Smith and an unnamed "Mr. Agent" and one typescript letter unsigned but seemingly from one of the Smiths responding to Fay's previous correspondence. Two photographs with the stamp of Adair's Studio at 4105 Central Avenue on the verso.

Fay's letters which identify the children as twins broadly discuss her hopes of securing acting representation for the twins facilitated by the Smiths who seem to have had some connections within the film industry. The letters also frankly address Fay's financial hardships noting "I don't expect much for myself in the start buy if I only know that I have a Dependance I will feel safer. I don't think I shall ever be able to go into any ones kitchen and the lisence is so high for readings that unless I can't find any other sorce of Deasent living I hardly know what to do" sic all. Fay's note about licenses for readings as well as her distinctive moniker suggests that she also worked as a medium or psychic in addition to having previously worked for the Smiths.

In her single letter to the unnamed agent Fay reiterates her desperation and states that she previously took the children to noted film and television comedy producer Hal Roach. She goes on to state her preference for the children working with a white agent and avoiding "the Central ave. agents". Central Avenue and 41st Street was the heart of African American life in Los Angeles in the early and mid-20th century a populous region commonly referred to as the "Black belt of the city" home to a rapidly growing African American community as well as numerous Black-owned enterprises.

As a whole the archive presents an interesting and emotive glimpse into life on the edges of Depression-era Hollywood as well as the numerous difficulties and limitations faced by African Americans in gaining entry into the film industry.

Photographs approximately 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Letters varying sizes. All materials generally Very Good plus lightly age-toned with some dampstaining to the letters. N.p. unknown books‎

In the foreground alongside the lake a woman holds her child in arms whilst others stand to bear a clearer view. ‎Hardcover, 272 pages, English, 285 x 245 mm, book is as New !, with very special photographs in colour !! gorgeous clothings and masks.. ISBN 9789401473644. In Dark & Dystopian Post-Mortem Fairy Tales, Mothmeister - the two-headed alter ego of the anonymous Belgian artistic duo - pays tribute to the many muses that incited its unsettling and eccentric dreamworld. These range from artists around the globe, legendary figures and myths and a quirky taxidermy collection to desolate places where its most grotesque and often melancholic characters were born, such as the macabre Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, the abandoned unearthly town of Pyramiden in Spitsbergen and the site of the Chernobyl disaster. All of this flows into a unique fairyland that flirts with the morbid, religious and often clownish, in which taxidermy animals are brought back to life in the most unusual ways.‎

‎Agee James; Evans Walker‎

‎Sia lode ora a uomini di fama‎

‎ill., br.

‎A Way of Seeing NYC Street Photography‎

‎Durham: Duke University Press 1989. Fine/A Near Fine Slipcase.
HELEN LEVITT & THE POETRY OF THE SIDEWALK - THE QUIET DRAMA OF ORDINARY LIFE.
A pristine copy of the 1989 Duke University Press edition. This 'Third Edition' kept Levitt's work in print for a new generation of photographers featuring corrected text and 20 additional photographs not found in earlier versions.

Key Features:
Content: The definitive 'reader's edition.' It includes the seminal James Agee essay and an expanded selection of Levitt's 1940s street photography.
Edition: Third Edition 1989 published in association with The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
Provenance: From the library of Ben Raeburn Levitt's former publisher at Horizon Press. It is significant that he retained this copy from the rival press in his personal collection.
Visuals: High-quality duotone reproductions of children masks and street theatre in Harlem and the Lower East Side.

Physical Specs:
Date: 1989
Dimensions: 9 x 11.5 inches.
Format: Stiff pictorial softcover wraps.

Condition: Fine -- Gift Quality. The wraps are bright and glossy with sharp corners. The binding is tight and uncreased. The pages are clean and unmarked. A superior copy of a book often found well-worn by students. By 1989 Helen Levitt was no longer a 'rediscovered' artist but an acknowledged master. This Duke University Press edition marks the moment her work transitioned from the world of fine-press rarities like the 1981 Horizon edition into the academic canon.

Published in association with the Center for Documentary Studies this volume solidified A Way of Seeing as a required text for students of photography and sociology alike ensuring that Agee's prose and Levitt's 'anti-journalistic' vision would influence the 1990s generation of artists.

Keywords: Helen Levitt James Agee Duke University Press Street Photography Documentary Studies New York School Harlem 1940s Photography Ben Raeburn Estate. ‎Agee, James (1909-1955) with Photography of Helen Levitt‎

‎A Way of Seeing with an Essay by James Agee‎

‎New York: Horizon Press 1981. First Trade Edition of the Enlarged Edition. Fine/Near Fine.
THE THEATER of CHILDHOOD
The First Trade Edition Hardcover of the 1981 expanded reissue featuring 24 new images not found in the 1965 original; the definitive 1981 expanded edition a dual-masterpiece of 20th-century street photography and American criticism.

Sourced directly from the estate of the publisher Ben Raeburn and bearing the ownership signature of his partner Pat Percy this copy represents the primary lineage of the book's production. While James Agee's 1946 essay is widely considered the most penetrating text ever written on the medium this specific Horizon Press edition-printed by the legendary Meriden Gravure Company-was the first to successfully marry Agee's poetic vision with Helen Levitt's expanded portfolio of 24 additional images.

KEY FEATURES:
Visuals: High-quality halftone reproductions printed by the Meriden Gravure Company superior to the later Duke reprints.
Content: The expanded layout designed by Marvin Hoshino featuring the complete unedited text of James Agee's seminal essay.
Provenance: From the estate of Ben Raeburn with the ownership signature of his life-partner Pat Percy on the front free endpaper.
Format: Hardcover in gray cloth with the original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

Physical Specs: Hardcover with Dust Jacket. - 1981 - 9.5 x 10.75 inches.
Condition: Fine in Near Fine Dust Jacket. The binding is tight and square with sharp corners. The text block is crisp. The dust jacket is remarkably fresh with the price intact showing only the faintest hint of shelf handling. A superior copy preserved within the publisher's estate. Historical Significance:
A Way of Seeing is unique in the canon of photobooks because it is a true dual-masterpiece. James Agee wrote the accompanying essay around 1946 specifically to champion Levitt's work though the book remained unpublished until after his death in 1955.

Agee's text is widely considered one of the most penetrating essays on photography ever written; in it he defines the camera not as a tool of journalism but as "the central instrument of our time" for capturing the lyrical fleeting beauty of the everyday.

He praises Levitt's ability to remain "invisible" on the street allowing the raw unposed theater of New York children to unfold before her lens. This 1981 Horizon Press edition was crucial in re-establishing this collaboration presenting Agee's poetic criticism alongside Levitt's expanded portfolio in a quality that finally matched their original vision.

Helen Levitt 1913-2009 is revered as one of America's great street photographers best known for her lyrical black-and-white images of New York children and city life. James Agee 1909-1955 was an influential American writer and critic; his essay in A Way of Seeing is widely regarded as among the most penetrating written on photography.

Subjects: Helen Levitt street photography James Agee photographic criticism/essay New York City street life American 20th-century photography Fine book design Photography monograph Art book Limited edition collectible.
