"L'idea di un libro sull'East End si formò intorno agli anni Ottanta. I docks della città di Londra avevano già chiuso o stavano cominciando a farlo. Decisi di fotografare principalmente nei distretti di Canning Town e Silvertown. Nel corso degli anni ho trascorso molti fine settimana a riprendere qualunque cosa colpisse la mia immaginazione. Le altre due volte che avevo avuto particolare ispirazione fotografica nell'East End erano state negli anni Sessanta e nel periodo compreso fra il 2004 e il 2010. Sono questi i miei tre periodi chiave da cui attingere immagini, piuttosto che 'pescare a strascico' negli ultimi cinquant'anni dai miei archivi fotografici. Alla fine degli anni Quaranta sentii una frase alla radio, "Go west, young man.' Al momento non le diedi molta importanza. Più tardi realizzai che veniva dall'America della metà del XIX secolo, quando la costa occidentale degli Stati Uniti cominciava ad offrirsi con tutte le sue grandi ricchezze e opportunità. I cockneys avrebbero dovuto ascoltare il consiglio, ma non lo fecero. Andarono verso est, proprio come avevano fatto i loro antenati".

This book is David Bailey's portrayal of the landscapes and personalities of the mystical and densely forested Naga Hills, part of the complex mountain barrier between India and Myanmar (Burma), and home to the Naga tribes, "those with pierced ears" in Burmese. Bailey's desire to visit the Naga Hills has been with him since youth, yet access had been continually restricted because of war and unrest&mdash;until 2012 when that wish finally became a reality. Bailey had initially wanted to photograph the story of the last headhunters in the region, but in typically Bailey style, he needed to improvise when things didn't quite go to plan: he recalls for example cutting though difficult terrain (at times needing to walk beside the four-wheel drives), becoming lost for hours, only to be discovered by armed men who directed him to a party at a guard post, where he proceeded to dance the night away with the soldiers... Il volume ritrae paesaggi e persone delle mistiche e fitte foreste delle Naga Hills, parte della complessa barriera montuosa tra l'India e il Myanmar (Birmania) e patria delle tribù Naga, "quelli con le orecchie bucate" in birmano. Il desiderio di Bailey di visitare le Naga Hills lo accompagnava fin dalla giovinezza, ma l'accesso era continuamente limitato a causa della guerra e dei disordini, fino al 2012, quando quel desiderio è finalmente diventato realtà. Inizialmente Bailey voleva fotografare la storia degli ultimi cacciatori di teste della regione, ma nel tipico stile di Bailey, ha dovuto improvvisare quando le cose non sono andate come previsto. Ricorda, ad esempio, di aver attraversato un terreno difficile (a volte dovendo camminare accanto ai fuoristrada), di essersi perso per ore, per poi essere ritrovato da uomini armati che lo hanno indirizzato a una festa in un posto di guardia, dove ha continuato a ballare tutta la notte con i soldati...
