Il lavoro di Luigi Ghirri (Scandiano, 1943 - Reggio Emilia, 1992) è contrassegnato dalla tensione tra la cosa e la sua rappresentazione e non c'è nulla che egli ami più di quelle situazioni in cui i confini diventano permeabili. La sua opera ci ha insegnato un nuovo modo di vedere, dando un significato a quello che è apparentemente ovvio. Le immagini proposte in questo volume - vintage e projects prints - che risalgono soprattutto agli anni settanta e ottanta, formano una sorta di mosaico organico dei tratti principali del lavoro di Ghirri: interni ed esterni, campagna e città, presenza umana e minerale, architetture urbane e luoghi della vita quotidiana, fotografie di fotografie. Il tema principale di questi scatti è però soprattutto il paesaggio. Non il paesaggio che viene normalmente percepito, bensì quello che vi si suppone latente, inscritto sul rovescio: paesaggio della memoria e della favola, paesaggio di figure nascoste e di prodigi. In questa direzione, Ghirri ha sempre prediletto luoghi familiari, già visti, ma per la prima volta 'guardati' con occhi diversi, dove tutto è sospeso tra passato e futuro e dove, come in un paesaggio di campagna, il mondo può essere immaginato come una visione che dà ancora stupore. Un pensiero-paesaggio.

ill., br. Il paesaggio di Giacomelli è insieme reale e inventato, così come il suo sguardo è visionario e visivo al contempo. È il pretesto per rappresentare una situazione altra. Le sue sono "terre scritte", dove l'orizzonte è quasi del tutto eliminato: un incastro di tempo e non-tempo. Nei suoi paesaggi il rapporto tra campagna e memoria, tra Giacomelli e una terra-madre negata e accettata si fa più drammatico, traducendosi in un'asciutta e grande rappresentazione. Della terra egli coglie i segni, la materia, i solchi, tuttavia trovando in essi corrispondenze con i corpi dell'uomo, perché la terra, nella sua poetica, è la carne stessa dell'uomo. Nel complesso la sua opera è caratterizzata dalla ricchezza di rimandi interni e di sviluppi che la rendono inconfondibile, nelle parti come nell'insieme. Così la serie del paesaggio è profondamente legata a un altro importante capitolo della sua opera: "Motivo suggerito dal taglio dell'albero". Entrambe queste ricerche sono le più dimostrative del suo modo di procedere e di costruire. In questa serie di scatti, in particolare, partendo dai piccoli dettagli della natura, che veicolano in sé un respiro umano, come un alchimista dello sguardo Giacomelli trasforma l'immagine in un "doppio visivo".

ill., ril. Il volume riunisce in modo organico le fotografie realizzate da Olivo Barbieri (Carpi, Modena, 1954) nei primi anni ottanta. In questi scatti, carichi di mistero e quotidianità, si ritrovano già tutti gli elementi che nei decenni successivi il fotografo emiliano ha sviluppato: l'illuminazione artificiale nella città contemporanea, le vedute dall'alto, gli interni delle abitazioni e dei bar, i segni lasciati dall'uomo nel paesaggio. In consonanza con quello spirito di ricerca che ha caratterizzato la stagione della fotografia italiana tra la fine degli anni settanta i l'inizio del decennio successivo, Barbieri ha perlustrato, con sguardo acuto e minuzioso, angoli di provincia - autentici luoghi dell'indefinito - con l'intento di indagare il tema della percezione e della sua rappresentazione. Le sue immagini scalfiscono la superficie di un banale solo apparente e, in uno stato di attesa e spaesamento, aprono a un modo nuovo di guardare lo spazio, instillando nell'osservatore il dubbio: vediamo davvero la realtà? Attraverso la sottile ambiguità delle sue immagini, Barbieri ci insegna come sia necessario guardare moltiplicando i punti di vista dentro e fuori di noi, per vedere in modo più consapevole ciò che è indefinitamente vero. Il volume accoglie un testo critico di Corrado Benigni e una conversazione con l'artista.

Das Königreich Dahomey fiel 1892 an Frankreich und wurde Teil von Französisch-Westafrika, später entstand hieraus der Staat Benin. Seltene Ansichtskarte eines Verlags aus der deutschen Kolonialzeit!

Si tratta di un testo in qualche modo pionieristico, uno dei primi tentativi di tirare le fila di una disciplina che proprio in quegli anni si andava affermando su più fronti - esposizioni, editoria, grafica - e in modo sempre più massiccio e accessibile al vasto pubblico. Benjamin individua le tematiche e le ricerche che muovono la fotografia dai primi dagherrotipi fino agli autori a lui contemporanei, intrecciando il suo racconto con un dibattito di natura teorica sui legami tra arte e fotografia, ancora oggi di grande attualità. Questa edizione - la prima illustrata in Italia - ripropone alcune delle immagini scelte da Benjamin nel 1931.

br. Può forse apparire singolare che uno studioso del calibro di Walter Benjamin si avventurasse nel 1931 a stilare la storia di una tecnica, quale quella fotografica, che non aveva allora che un centinaio d'anni o poco più, avendo Niépce e Daguerre fondato solo nel 1829 la prima società per lo sviluppo delle tecniche fotografiche. E ancora più singolare che il filosofo tedesco già parlasse in queste sue pagine di periodo d'oro e di declino dell'arte fotografica. Questa singolarità cessa tuttavia di essere tale non appena si cominci a riflettere su quanto sempre vi è di originale nella ricerca di Benjamin, costantemente tesa a individuare le origini, e insieme le potenzialità grandi o piccole, positive o negative, di ogni fenomeno studiato. Da questo punto di vista il lettore non mancherà certo di avvertire in queste pagine pionieristiche una forte vicinanza, e una prima messa a fuoco, a quell'indagine a tutto campo che costituisce uno dei capolavori del filosofo tedesco:"L'opera d'arte nell'epoca della sua riproducibilità tecnica", che vedrà la luce solo cinque anni più tardi. Anche e proprio in questa direzione, questo volume riunisce altri due scritti poco noti di Benjamin: il primo, "Novità dal mondo dei fiori", è concepito come recensione all'opera del fotografo Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932), grande protagonista della fotografia applicata al mondo floreale; il secondo, "Lettera da Parigi", si concentra invece sul rapporto tra pittura e fotografia, riprendendo e sviluppando alcuni dei temi solamente toccati nel saggio iniziale.

Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. In de tentoonstelling is een mix van vintages afdrukken en nieuwe prints te zien. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar Hermans' archief. In het mapje Vrij belangrijke foto's zat een bonte verzameling van 57 afdrukken: portretten van Hermans zelf, zijn ouders en andere familieleden, vrienden plus foto's van affiches, de Arc de Triomphe, huizen in Wenen en het geboortehuis van Nietzsche. *** Als afsluiting van het 'Hermansjaar' 2021-2022, waarin wordt gevierd dat de Nederlandse schrijver Willem Frederik Hermans honderd jaar geleden werd geboren, presenteert het Fotomuseum Den Haag een expositie ingericht met door hem gemaakte foto's. Gelijktijdig verschijnt Willem Frederik Hermans - Vrij belangrijke foto's met een verse selectie uit zijn fotografische oeuvre. Het boek en de tentoonstelling kwamen tot stand onder auspiciën van het Willem Frederik Hermans Instituut en met in-stemming van de Erven Hermans. Het in principe gesloten archief-Hermans is daarvoor eenmalig opengesteld voor de gastconservatoren. In 1957, toen zijn roman De donkere kamer van Damokles niet wilde vlotten, heeft Hermans overwogen zich om te scholen tot fotograaf. Hij kocht een professionele camera, mat zich de firmanaam 'Persfotobedrijf W.F. Hermans' aan en ging in de leer bij Nico Jesse, van wie hij ook een oude Leica overnam. Daarmee sloeg hij fanatiek aan het fotograferen in Groningen, Amsterdam en Parijs. Uiteindelijk kreeg de Leica een sleutelrol in zijn roman. Piet Schreuders en Bram Oostveen bekeken alle 4.500 zwartwitfoto's en 9.829 kleurendia's in het archief-Hermans en maakten een selectie waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is gepubliceerd. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. Met tekstbijdragen van Wim van Sinderen, conservator van het Fotomuseum Den Haag, Piet Schreuders en W.F. Hermans. In zijn inleiding plaatst Wim van Sinderen W.F. Hermans in de traditie van de Nederlandse fotografie. Piet Schreuders geeft achtergrondinformatie over de gekozen foto's in het essay 'De verlegen fotograaf' en W.F. Hermans geeft een inkijk in zijn visie op fotografie. Bram Oostveen werkt bij het onderzoeksinstituut Huygens ING en was nauw betrokken bij de totstandkoming van de 24-delige Volledige Werken van Willem Frederik Hermans.
