La morte del soggetto, la sua resurrezione al di là del reale, l'arresto del tempo, la presenza di ciò che è assente e l'assenza di ciò che è presente, tutti questi paradossi Carroll li visse un'infinità di volte dietro il suo obiettivo. La fotografia svolse un'altra funzione per il grande poeta: quella di essere la camera di compensazione della sua vita amorosa frustrata. Noi fotografi siamo una genia di bricconi, di guardoni e di ladri. Ci troviamo ovunque non siamo desiderati; tradiamo segreti che nessuno ci confida; spiamo senza vergogna ciò che non ci riguarda e ci appropriamo di cose che non ci appartengono. E, a lungo andare, ci ritroviamo possessori delle ricchezze di un mondo che abbiamo depredato. Fu dunque la fotografia che permise a Lewis Carroll, a questo pastore tentato dal maligno, di esorcizzare i demoni che lo perseguitavano. Grazie alla fotografia, la cattura dell'immagine poteva surrogare il possesso. «Era fatale» scrive André Bay, uno dei suoi più profondi conoscitori, «che Carroll facesse intervenire questo schermo tra l'inaccessibile fanciulla e la sua brama di averla. Egli la possedeva attraverso l'obiettivo». L'intera vita amorosa di Lewis Carroll fu mediata dalla fotografia, passò attraverso di essa. Prima edizione di 490 esemplari (490 trade copies). . Rivers of Power di Alejandro Cartagena esplora il rapporto tra l'uomo e la natura ei futili tentativi umani di cercare di controllarla. La natura in questo caso è rappresentata dal fiume Catarina che attraversa la città messicana di Monterrey. Il suo letto fluviale vuoto e seducente sembra invitare gli imprenditori a trarre vantaggi da quegli spazi aperti e liberi. Il fotolibro racconta anche di come l'uomo dimentichi presto che il corso normale dell'acqua fluviale può scatenare l'inferno durante gli uragani proveniente dai Caraibi. Cartagena mescola fotografie storiche dei primi tentativi di controllare il corso del fiume alla sua indagine documentaria fatta di fotografie a colori. Il design del libro richiama benissimo il contenuto: il libro è flessibile e "nudo", come l'acqua del fiume, ed è racchiuso in una custodia rigida, simile alle condutture e alle tubature usate per controllare l'acqua, che con la rimozione del libro interno, paiono collassare.
