Caribbean Travel Photo Album Recording Colonial Port Cities and Canal Zone Circulation from Jamaica to Panama 1910s-20s
1914. Caribbean photograph album likely compiled by a person connected to the Panama Canal Zone and the Caribbean documenting how steamship mobility port circulation and U.S. imperial presence linked Jamaica Venezuela Trinidad Barbados Cuba Puerto Rico the Bahamas Florida and Panama in the years after the canal opened. The felt cover lettered "PANAMA" and bearing the Seal of the Canal Zone places the album within the new travel geography created by U.S. control of the Canal Zone and the canal's 1914 opening when Panama became a central hinge between Atlantic and Pacific movement and a major point of contact between North American travelers and Caribbean port cities. Photos show passengers on steamers and docks markets and streets forts and government buildings and repeated encounters between white visitors and Afro Caribbean and mixed-heritage residents across multiple colonial and semi-colonial settings.<br /> <br /> Panama Canal Zone travel photograph album. Caribbean and circum-Caribbean locations including Kingston Jamaica; La Guaira and Caracas Venezuela; Trinidad; Key West and Palm Beach Florida; Havana Cuba; Barbados; Panama City Balboa and Colón Panama; Nassau Bahamas; and San Juan Puerto Rico. Likely circa mid 1910s to early 1920s. Oblong felt-covered album measuring 6.5" x 11" with "PANAMA" stitched in large letters on the front cover and photographs pasted to grey leaves. Contains more than 160 black-and-white photographs most approximately 2.5 x 4.5 inches many with handwritten captions identifying locations activities and occasional names. The sequence opens in Kingston with captions including "Kingston JA" and "on the steamer" then moves through island and mainland stops; "Port of Spain Trinidad" "Market at Barbados" "Rapid Transit Barbados" "Havana Cuba" "San Juan Porto Rico" "Morro Castle" "Balboa" and "Colon R.P." Repeated figures especially a young college-aged woman and an older woman appear throughout. Notable images include a group of locals in shallow water at Barbados sifting for tossed coins from rowboats; a large crowd scene in San Juan gathered for what appears to be a public speech or civic event; battlements cannon and stone defenses in Havana; vernacular dwellings and children in impoverished conditions in Balboa; posed visitor photographs in what is labeled a "bull ring"; and numerous street dockside market and architectural views that juxtapose local populations with hotels public buildings ruins and newer urban construction.<br /> <br /> The album's historical force comes from the way it captures the social landscape of Caribbean travel under early twentieth-century U.S. power. After 1914 the Canal Zone intensified Panama's role within a wider American maritime sphere while Caribbean travel increasingly moved through port infrastructures shaped by empire commerce military strategy and tourism; this album records that world at eye level with photographs of docks steamers fortifications government sites public squares and local street life rather than limiting themselves to family snapshots alone. At the same time the images preserve the unequal human encounters built into that system especially where visitors photograph Black children boatmen market crowds and working neighborhoods as part of the travel experience. Felt cover worn and soiled with losses at edges and stitching strain; leaves brittle with chipping and tears; photographs generally present and legible with silvering fading corner wear and occasional losses or lifting. Proche d'un tirage au charbon par ses tons chauds et profonds, la photoglyptie est un procédé photomécanique complexe de reproduction phographique dont l'édition usa durant environ 20 ans, de 1875 à 1895. Cherchant une image idéale et esthétique des hommes célèbres, les plaques étaient toujours retouchées et repeintes, pour gommer une ride disgracieuse ou un défaut trop gênant, lustrer les cheveux, etc. C'est ainsi que la photographie et l'estampe se rejoignent dans une représentation nouvelle. La Galerie Contemporaine devint une maison d'édition qui vendait les images des hommes contemporains, ces images furent assemblées en 8 volumes in-folio par Paul de Lacroix mais continuaient à se vendre à part au siège de la Galerie Contemporaine. Ce n?est pas une bande dessinee, mais un album avec des dessins splendides et des phrases profondes. Au debut, c?est blanc dans ma tete. Je ne pense a rien et ce rien parait blanc. Pareil a la page ou l?on a envie de dessiner. Ou semblable aux nuages les plus lents. J?ai un poids un milieu du cerveau ou les pensees ne passent pas. Premiers dessins sur fond blanc, un plan de moins en moins flou, on voit une main bandee. Seconde page, nous passons au fond noir qui continuera jusqu?a la fin de l?album. Les bandages de la tete laissent deviner des oreilles, chien ou chat ? L?etre se reveille. Il est dans une chambre d?hopital. Un policier l?interroge et lui apprend qu?il a ete victime d?un attentat et qu?il est un chien. Il va pouvoir retourner chez lui. ?« Chienne de vie, que fais-je dans cette ville ? On dirait que la haine commence ici ?». Il retourne dans un monde ou le voisin pourrait etre son ennemi, ou le chien domine et extermine le chat, tiens, ca titille du cote des reminiscences, un pays ou les reves de jour sont interdits !! Nous traversons des dessins qui pourraient faire penser, au ghetto de Varsovie, tout au moins comme je me l?imagine. L?angoisse et la peur suent, les regards sont fuyants. Chaque phrase de cet album est un coup de poing dans le plexus ou dans la memoire. Peu de texte, mais, il va droit au but, sans fioriture. Carl Norac, en phrases tres courtes, nous fait sentir le malaise de Rousseau, sa quete, son angoisse. Carl Norac et Stephane Poulin nous parlent de tolerance, du racisme, de la peur, de la quete et que ce soit les pages dessins ou les pages textes, l?emotion est toujours omnipresente et nous happe. La memoire blanche permet d?ecrire un nouveau livre de sa vie, de regarder les autres sans aucun a priori ni sectarisme. Oui, vraiment un tres, tres bel et bon album emprunt de beaucoup de poesie. Vous le relisez, une autre face apparait. Maintenant, il faut que je le rende a la bibliotheque, mais je l?aurais bien garde celui-la aussi. Je vous en recommande vivement la lecture.

Carli, Laura (Laura Russo. Forlì 1906-2005)
Ritratto fotografico
CON DEDICA Buon esemplare lievemente rifilato. Intenso ritratto, con breve dedica e firma autografe: “Ad Azelina Manitti - Laura Carli”. Compiuti gli studi liceali e un corso di scultura presso l’Acc. di Belle Arti di Ravenna, debuttò nel 1932 nella Comp. di R. Ricci. Primadonna nel 1938 con Ruggeri fornì alcune interpretazioni fortemente drammatiche (“Assunta Spina” di S. Di Giacomo e “I Padri etruschi” di T. Pinelli) che le valsero un successo man mano convalidato. Nel 1943 tornò con M. Benassi e nel 1944-’45 fu nella Comp. Stabile di Venezia. Nel primo dopoguerra ha formato Comp. con G. Stival e F. Giachetti; nel 1950-’51 ha diretto il Teatro dei Satiri di Roma, nel 1953 ha fatto parte del Teatro delle Due Città di Firenze. Negli anni ’60 la troviamo spesso presente in sceneggiati televisivi e teleromanzi. Poche le sua apparizioni cinematografiche, tra cui: “Fiori d’arancio” di M. Albani/D. Hobbes Cecchini (1944), uno dei pochi film ultimati a Venezia durante la R.S.I. e “Il cantante misterioso” di M. Girolami (1954).

The publication: Four years, three deaths, sweaty armpits and a fetus is a fragmented tale from the life of the Romanian family Fuliash, who I became acquainted with fourteen years ago. The quick succession of events - death, new life and a marriage, all happening in a short period of time - were the reason for me to make this publication. All the photographs and videos were shot between August 2009 and May 2010, in the area around Beius and Stei in Romania. La pubblicazione: "Four years, three deaths, sweaty armpits and a fetus" è un racconto frammentato della vita della famiglia rumena Fuliash, che ho conosciuto quattordici anni fa. La rapida successione degli eventi - morte, nuova vita e un matrimonio, tutti avvenuti in un breve periodo di tempo - sono stati la ragione per me per realizzare questa pubblicazione". Tutte le fotografie e i video sono stati realizzati tra agosto 2009 e maggio 2010, nei dintorni di Beius e Stei in Romania.
