Very Good Turkish Original b/w photograph. Pera Palas photographer. 13x18 cm (photo size), 15x20 cm (leaflet size). Illustrated wrapper of the contemporary Pera Palace. Celal Bayar, (1883-1986), was a Turkish politician, who was the third President of Turkey from 1950 to 1960; previously he was Prime Minister of Turkey from 1937 to 1939. Bayar, as the Turkish President, was decorated with the Legion of Merit by the President of the United States, as a result of Turkey's participation in the Korean War. He is considered to be the longest-lived former head of state and was the longest-lived state leader until 8 December 2008 (when he was surpassed by Chau Sen Cocsal Chhum). Celal Bayar died on 22 August 1986 at the age of 103 after a brief illness.

Per questa ragione Giovanni Gastel, che per decenni si è impegnato a esaltare il bello, femminile e maschile, artificiale e naturale, in questa serie intitolata Maschere e Spettri tende a trasformare il sublime in orrido, il vitale in tombale. Pubblicato in occasione della mostra di Milano (Palazzo della Ragione, 23 settembre - 25 ottobre 2009), il volume presenta 70 immagini inedite di figure femminili in cui lo specchio della fotografia invece di restituire la loro bellezza, quasi sovrannaturale, come è compito della moda, ne documenta l'aspetto transeunte e abissale: presenze che vengono da un altro mondo. Fra i fotografi più noti a livello internazionale, Giovanni Gastel vanta un'esperienza trentennale nel mondo della moda. Caratterizzata dal rigore formale, la sua fotografia è un intreccio tra sperimentazione e glamour: è stato, infatti, il primo ad introdurre le tecniche "old mix", la tecnica "a incrocio", le rielaborazioni pittoriche e lo still life ironico. Le immagini di Maschere e Spettri testimoniano un ampliamento dell'attuale ricerca di Gastel che vede il corpo delle modelle subire ora tagli e metamorfosi inediti in equilibrio tra attrazione e repulsione, tra raffinata eleganza e sottile decadenza.

Dall'inizio del Novecento con l'avvento delle avanguardie storiche, e in particolare del surrealismo, la storia della fotografia è attraversata da immagini irreali e angoscianti che si legano all'inconscio e all'onirico, all'ignoto e al fantastico. Oggi queste immagini non riguardano più la sola dimensione interiore e psicologica, ma le vicende folli e tragiche della storia. Alla dimensione metafisica dello sguardo si contrappone ora un fotografare che documenta le malattie e le guerre, le tragedie e le violenze nate da un'ossessione di morte più che di vita. Sono immagini controverse e inquietanti, attestati di un reale orrifico e crudele che coinvolge tutta la società, dall'individuo alla famiglia, dal genere all'etnia. Qui la fotografia rifiuta ogni funzione di decoro per raccontare il non-detto e il male-detto; affronta un'oggettività proibita che infrange ogni tabù sconvolgendo il pensare comune. "Fotografia maledetta e non" nasce dall'interesse e dallo studio che Germano Celant ha coltivato per un fotografare dalle polarità opposte, tra negativo e positivo, capace di produrre testimonianze visive del piacere come dell'orrore del vivere. Un transitare dal bello allo spregevole, dal perturbante al sereno, in una traversata che non cessa di misurarsi con gli estremi della fotografia contemporanea. Il volume è costituito da venticinque saggi, redatti dal 1974 al 2012.
