Joachim Brohm rose to prominence in the early 1980s, one of the first photographers in Europe to take pictures exclusively in colour, connecting the everyday cultural landscape with the new possibilities of colour photography. This collection titled Typology 1979 is one of his very earliest series, depicting 35 allotment sheds from the Ruhr valley region of Germany, painterly images that are an everyday inventory – of garden structures, of human activity. Influenced by the great American photographers such as William Eggleston and Robert Adams, he also looked to his German contemporaries, Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose "typologies' are heralded in the collection's title.Joachim Brohm è diventato famoso all'inizio degli anni '80, uno dei primi fotografi in Europa a scattare foto esclusivamente a colori, collegando il paesaggio quotidiano con le nuove possibilità della fotografia a colori. Questa collezione intitolata "Typology 1979" è una delle sue primissime serie, raffiguranti 35 capannoni di lottizzazione dalla regione tedesca della valle della Ruhr, immagini pittoriche che sono un inventario quotidiano - delle strutture del giardino e dell'attività umana. Alle Schauspieler sind eitel, alle Schauspieler sind überwiegend Opportunisten, haben Angst, müssen Geld verdienen oder glauben, es sei wichtig, viel Geld zu verdienen, auf jeden Fall müssen sie die größten Rollen spielen usw. usw. Auf jeden Fall ist es ein schwieriges und übles Völkchen. Im Grunde bist du völlig allein und bleibst es auch dein Leben lang. Freundschaften gibt es nur wenige. Dieser Beruf ist ein ziemlicher Wahnsinn. Aber das Schöne daran ist, dass wir die Aufgabe haben, immer wieder den einzelnen Menschen zu suchen. Eine zutiefst humane Anstrengung, dem Menschen und damit sich selbst auf die Schliche zu kommen. Es ist eine zivilisierende Arbeit. So etwas wie Fremdenfeindlichkeit ist mir schon deswegen vollkommen fremd, weil ich dauernd das Glück habe, ein Fremder zu sein, auszuprobieren, wie es ist, ein anderer zu sein. Die schönste Übung ist die, zu lernen, was es heißt, sich zurückzunehmen, etwas Fremdes verstehen zu lernen. Sich in einem guten Sinn zu verstellen, sogar sich selbst unsichtbar zu machen und trotzdem da zu sein. Es ist ein Geheimnis, dass du auf der Bühne oder vor der Kamera etwas leistest, was du im normalen Leben gar nicht aufbringen kannst. Nicht umsonst heißt es beim Film, wenn eine Einstellung abgedreht ist, "gestorben". Die Kamera saugt an dir, du bist quasi dem Auge des Todes gegenüber. Auf der Bühne bist du es, der etwas bewegt, im Film holt sich die Kamera alles von dir. Auf der Bühne erlebst du, dass die Zeit außer Kraft gesetzt ist. Es ist eine andere Welt, mit einem eigenen Zeitablauf, die Zeit ist aufgehoben, und du bist so privilegiert und darfst darin sein. Du darfst dich bloß nicht deswegen etwa für einen Schöpfer halten. Tust du das, fliegst du auf die Nase. Du bist vollkommen ausgestellt. Du bist so ausgesetzt, du hast zum Schutz nur die Figur, den anderen, den du spielst. Wenn man Angst hat, sich zu blamieren, geht gar nichts. Der Schutz besteht vielleicht darin, dass du dir sagen kannst, wenn sich einer blamiert, dann ist es der da - diese Figur, also Napoleon oder Claudius. " (Seite 64) ISBN 9783458200161‎
