In una notte d'inverno del 1948 a New York City, Walter Chandoha, allora giovane studente di marketing e fotografo in erba, vide un gattino randagio nella neve, lo avvolse nel suo cappotto e lo portò a casa. Non immaginava di avere appena incontrato la musa che avrebbe determinato il corso della sua vita. Chandoha puntò l'obiettivo sul suo nuovo amico felino - che aveva chiamato Loco - e fu così soddisfatto dei risultati ottenuti che iniziò a fotografare i gattini di un rifugio della zona. Queste immagini segnarono l'inizio di una straordinaria carriera durata settant'anni. Assai prima di Internet e dei catsofinstagram, Chandoha affascinava il pubblico con i suoi felini. Dalle pubblicità alle cartoline, dai puzzle alle confezioni di alimenti per animali, le sue immagini combinavano un autentico amore per quelle creaturine, una ferrea etica professionale, e una tecnica impeccabile. Quell'illuminazione affascinante, così tipica di Chandoha, che fa risaltare in tutta la sua nitidezza il morbido manto di ogni gatto, avrebbe definito il vocabolario visivo dei ritratti di animali per generazioni e ispirato maestri del calibro di Andy Warhol, che ne seguì l'esempio nel suo libro illustrato sui gatti. Cats attinge agli archivi di questo artista innovativo, con ritratti a colori in studio e d'ambiente, fotografie di strada in bianco e nero, immagini di concorsi felini vintage, e teneri scatti che ritraggono i suoi figli insieme ai gatti e molto altro ancora. Un tributo perfetto non solo a queste creature ammaliatrici ma anche a un fotografo straordinario che ci ha lasciato da pochissimo, all'età di 98 anni, e che era in grado di trasmettere un forte sentimento di compassione in ogni sua inquadratura.
