COPLEY Alfred L.
Ensemble de six négatifs photographiques visualisant des hémorragies au microscope
- s.n., s.l. (Paris) s.d. (ca 1950), 11x8,5cm, 5 négatifs en plastique & 1 en verre. - [NEW YORK SCHOOL] Alfred L. COPLEY Collection of six photographic negatives showing haemorrhages under a microscope [Paris ca 1950] | 11 x 8.5 cm | 5 plastic negatives & 1 glass Collection of six photographic negatives (5 on plastic and 1 on glass) showing haemorrhages under a microscope made in the 1950s by Alfred L. Copley in his Parisian laboratory. Each negative, except one, is accompanied by a technical sheet on Copley's laboratory letterhead. Under the pseudonym L. Acopley, this scientist and artist from the School of New York produced emblematic works of abstract expressionism. A doctor by training, he was particularly interested in hemorheology, in other words the study of the flow properties of blood. The negatives that we have to offer are a valuable testimony to his research and were an undeniable inspiration for his pictorial works. His works today are preserved at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, at the Art Institute of Chicago, at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Copper smelter town / Hadley (Alaska). -
Nine original photographs from former copper town Hadley (Alaska) around 1910-1920. Photographs showing the old copper smelter town from different perspectives.
Three different formats. Nine photographs. Original photographs, black-white. Mostly full-page format, without a framing. Some with short notes at the back side (English Language). Photographs with some minor crinkles at corners and little rubbing. Partly a bit faded at the edges but mostly still with good contrasts. Paper is a bit bent. Appropriate to its age and origin still in good condition. The nine photographs include different views on the former copper smelting town Hadley at the Prince of Wales Island (Alaska, US). In Hadley once the mined copper ores have been melted and processed, later the extracted copper was shipped to other places. The photographs exist in three different formats: a small one (ca. 16,4 x 21,5 cm), a middle size (ca. 19,1 x 24,1 cm) and a bigger format (ca. 20 x 25,2 cm). The black-white photographs still own their contrast although few of them are fading a bit at the edges. The photographs are giving us different perspectives on this place: smelter buildings seen from the near and distanced overviews from a ship. One photograph is even showing a smelter building from the inside. A few others show the nature and waters around the town. We also can see the small pier where once the copper has been prepared for shipping. The main overview owns a small stamp and note at the front: "Alaska Smelting & Refining Co. / General View of Hadley Smelter". A few others own a small note on their back side (english language). A photograph showing the waterways around the town for example is titled: "'Hole in the wall' by Hadley, Alaska". Another one was titled: "View to the north from waterbank showing boilerstacks and wharfes". The photographs very probably have been made by a swedish engineer working at Hadley. Other photographs from the same collection (second offer) own a lot of swedish notes and commentaries at their back sides and contain some more private views. Very rare historical material from Alaska in the first two decades of the 20th century!

Copper smelter town / Hadley (Alaska). -
Thirteen original photographs from former copper town Hadley (Alaska) around 1910-1920. Photographs showing the old copper smelter town from different perspectives.
Three different formats. Thirteen photographs. Original photographs, black-white. Mostly full-page format, without a framing. With commentaries at the back sides (Swedish Language). Photographs with some minor crinkles at corners and little rubbing. Partly a bit faded at the edges but mostly still with good contrasts. Paper is a bit bent. Appropriate to its age and origin still in good condition. The thirteen photographs include different views on the former copper smelting town Hadley at the Prince of Wales Island (Alaska, US). The photographs exist in three different formats: a small one (ca. 16,4 x 21,5 cm), a middle size (ca. 19,1 x 24,1 cm) and a bigger format (ca. 20 x 25,2 cm). The black-white photographs still own their contrast although a few of them are fading a little bit at the edges. The thirteen photographs give us very different perspectives on this historical place: smelter buildings seen from the near and distanced overviews from a ship. Detailled views on the pier with rails, on a building in construction (in snow), on a ship at the pier and on a cleared piece of land probably for new buildings. One photograph is even showing one of the ships (for travelling) called "Marion". A main overview owns a small stamp and note at the front: "Alaska Smelting & Refining Co. / General View Smelter Buildings". Most of the photographs own commentaries on the back sides in swedish language. Some with two or three lines, a few with ten lines of text (Please see the given fotografic examples). The photographs very probably have been made by a swedish engineer working at Hadley. There has been copper mining and extracting in Sweden long before Alaska became a part of the US. One photograph shows two little girls with blond hair staying in the wood. It seems to be a family portrait, maybe they have been the daughters of this swedish man. There is also an envelope (newer one by Svenska Handelsbanken) with the handwritten swedish title: "Fotografier fran Hadley Alaska". Very rare historical material from Alaska in the first two decades of the 20th century!

COPPOCK, Christopher ( forew. ); PAUL SEAWRIGHT
INVISIBLE CITIES. PAUL SEAWRIGHT
Bound, illustrated cardboard, decorated endpapers, 235 x 375mm., 112pp., colour pictures troughout. ISBN 9781872771694. ISBN 9781872771694. Photographic representation of Africa in a Western context - characterised by largely pejorative imagery - has always held a fascination for the artist, Paul Seawright, and "Invisible Cities" was conceived as an attempt to add another, less prescriptive, layer to the pictorial mix. This lavishly illustrated artist's book with a highly distinctive format, draws inspiration from Calvino's book of the same name - which asserts that a city is less defined by its physicality and more by the way its inhabitants move within. Combining portraiture and architectural studies, these large format photographic works made in Lagos, Johannesburg, Lusaka and Addis Ababa, focus on those seemingly interminable prosaic moments, glimpses of the everyday in the hidden recesses of the city. This new monograph, brimming with powerful full bleed pictures gives voice to these burgeoning urban developments and highlights a dramatic, shifting and sometimes troubled landscape barely visible to the developed world. It includes an interview with the artist by Russell Roberts. New!
