She presented three bodies of work at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900: a collection of photographs by American women, a series of photographs of students in the Washington, D.C., school system, and a series of photographs of students from the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. These exhibits all promoted the nationalistic agenda of progress at the Paris Exposition, illustrating American advancement in art, education, and society." ; "Johnston was a significant-and arresting-figure in early twentieth-century photography.Johnston produced a good deal of the usual society portraiture of the time-including a nude photograph of a debutante that prompted the girl's outraged father to file a lawsuit-but she was also an important photodocumentarian. Students of African American history can reexamine life at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) or Tuskegee using hundreds of photographs made by Johnston at the turn of the last century.through Johnston's work we can see Admiral Dewey on the deck of the USS Olympia, the Roosevelt children playing with their pet pony at the White House, and the gardens of Edith Wharton's famous villa near Paris. The first time I saw a photograph by Danielle van Zadelhoff, I was deeply impressed because her gaze perplexed me, creating the confusion we typically feel when faced with people, circumstances or ideas that conceal some unknown secret?what we call mystery. She has invented a type of self-portrait using a model other than herself, in which she reflects her complex, sensitive inner world, her woman?s eye and her capacity for interpretation. ? Fernando Frances, Director Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga (CAC Malaga) Danielle van Zadelhoff vangt met haar fotografie het licht, heeft oog voor details en werkt met intieme poses. Haar intuitieve werkmethode, de natuurlijke maar beladen expressie van de modellen, het licht dat de broosheid ervan nog meer lijkt te benadrukken, zijn wat haar foto?s zo ontroerend, poetisch en universeel innemend maken. Het boek bevat 127 full colour foto?s, is gedrukt in Staccato raster om het meest gedetailleerde resultaat te bekomen, en werd in een minimal design jasje gegoten om de foto?s er nog meer te laten uitspringen. Het reproductieproces op luxepapier, het gebruik van intens zwart en de fragiliteit van de foto?s vragen om het gebruik van handschoenen die bij het boek horen. De handschoenen beschermen de foto?s en creeren tegelijkertijd een bijna rituele beleving van het werk van de kunstenares.
