Masoch, per portare avanti la relazione, stabilisce delle condizioni formalizzate in un patto sottoscritto da entrambi: il loro rapporto dovrà sottostare a delle rigide dinamiche padrona-schiavo, per soddisfare le fantasie erotiche dell'uomo. I due si sposano e hanno tre figli, mentre Masoch chiede costantemente ad Aurora di umiliarlo e violentarlo, sia fisicamente che emotivamente, fino a spingerla nelle braccia di un altro uomo. Carter/Muir, PMM 344 b. - Sehr seltene zweite deutsche Ausgabe, die einzige Ausgabe eines Werkes von Darwin mit einer Original-Portraitphotographie. Die 3. u. 4. Aufl. enthalten Darwins Porträt in Stahlstich, spätere Auflagen in Lichtdruck. Übertragen von dem bedeutenden Paläontologen H. G. Bronn (1800-1862), der "trotz der Verschiedenheit der Meinung der erste war, der, die eminente Bedeutung von Darwin`s Buch richtig einschätzend, demselben in einer vorzüglichen Übersetzung die weiteste und rascheste Verbreitung verschaffte und dadurch nicht wenig beitrug zu dem raschen Siege der Theorie" (ADB III, 360). - Der Stuttgarter Porträtmaler und Fotograf C. Buchner (1821-1918) ist auf dem Abzug als Fotograf angegeben hat jedoch nur die Abzüge der früher entstandenen Aufnahme angefertigt. - Buchner, war der jüngere Bruder des Porträt- und Historienmalers Johann Georg Buchner (1815?1857) und lieferte diesem fotografische Porträts als Vorlagen. Buchner war seit 1854 in Stuttgart tätig und wurde 1885 zum Hofmaler und Hoffotografen des Königreichs Württemberg ernannt. - Das Porträt Darwins von Henry Maull (1829?1914) entstand nach verschiedenen Quellen entweder 1854 (Darwin im Alter von 45 Jahren) oder 1859 oder 1860 (Darwin im Alter von 51 Jahren). Da eine ähnliche Aufnahme Darwins von Maull bekannt ist, über die sich Darwin in einem Brief vom 27. Mai 1855 kritisch äußert, ist die Datierung mit 1854 wahrscheinlicher. - Der britische Fotograf H. Maull gründete zusammen mit George Henry Polyblank 1854 ein Fotoatelier in London und firmierte bis 1865 als Maull & Polyblank, 1866-1878 als Maull, Henry & Co. bzw. Maull & Co. und 1879-1885 als Maull & Fox. H. Maull, der zahlreiche prominente Persönlichkeiten porträtierte, war seit 1870 Mitglied der Royal Photographic Society. Maull & Polyblank veröffentlichten 1859 "Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities. ... With biographical Notices by E. Walford" mit 40 Albumin-Abzügen (vgl. The Truthful Lens 212, 116). - St.a.T., die ersten und letzten Bl. etwas braunfleckig, sehr gutes Exemplar. - Very rare second German edition, the only edition of a work by Darwin with an original portrait photograph. The 3rd and 4th editions contain Darwin's portrait in steel engraving, later editions in collotype. Translated by the important paleontologist H. G. Bronn (1800-1862), who "despite the difference of opinion, was the first to correctly assess the eminent importance of Darwin's book and to give it the widest and quickest distribution in an excellent translation, thereby contributing not a little to the rapid victory of the theory" (ADB III, 360). - The Stuttgart portrait painter and photographer C. Buchner (1821-1918) is listed as the photographer on the print, but he only made the prints of the earlier photograph. - Buchner, was the younger brother of the portrait and history painter Johann Georg Buchner (1815-1857) and provided him with photographic portraits as models. Buchner had been working in Stuttgart since 1854 and was appointed court painter and court photographer of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1885. - According to various sources, the portrait of Darwin by Henry Maull (1829-1914) was taken either in 1854 (Darwin at the age of 45) or 1859 or 1860 (Darwin at the age of 51). Since a similar photograph of Darwin by Maull is known, about which Darwin made a critical comment in a letter dated May 27, 1855, the date of 1854 is more likely. - The British photographer H. Maull founded a photographic studio in London together with George Henry Polyblank in 1854 and traded as Maull & Polyblank until 1865, as Maull, Henry & Co. or Maull & Co. from 1866 to 1878 and as Maull & Fox from 1879 to 1885. H. Maull, who portrayed numerous prominent personalities, had been a member of the Royal Photographic Society since 1870. In 1859 Maull & Polyblank published "Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities. ... With biographical Notices by E. Walford" with 40 albumen prints (cf. The Truthful Lens 212, 116). - Stamp on titlepage, first and last leaves somewhat brownstained, very good copy.‎
