Davidson, Isaac G
1880s Photograph of Cabinet Gorge Clark Fork River Northern Idaho
Portland Oregon: Davidson Photo 1883. Very good. 5.5" x 8" albumen photograph on a 9.25" x 12" mount. Titled "Cabinet Gorge Clark's River looking down stream" with further caption for the series: "Scenery Along the Line of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company Clarke's Fork Division." Credited "Davidson Photo. Portland Oregon." Very good condition with small chips at corners of mount contrast a bit light. This series of views was apparently taken to celebrate and promote the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Construction had begun in Minnesota in 1870 and the final section was completed on September 8 1883. An article published in the Helena Montana Semi-Weekly Herald on July 19 1883 reports that "Mr. Ed Stone General Agent of the Land Department of the Northern Pacific Railroad is the possessor of a large album of views entitled "Oregon and the Pacific Northwest." Glimpses of pretty sports along the valley of the Columbia River from northern Montana to the Pacific Ocean. Scenery along the line of the Northern Pacific railroad showing the new Trans-continental route. The photographs were made by I.G. Davidson of Portland Oregon. There can be no grander promise of pictures of fine scenery given to any travelers than will be viewed by the tourists over the Northern Pacific railroad when it is completed through to the Pacific ocean this fall." Isaac Grundy Davidson 1845-1922 moved to Oregon from Illinois in 1850 and opened a photography studio in Portland in 1878. Mautz describes him as "one of the Northwest's premier photographers. DAVIDSON, Bruce (Oak Park, 1933)
East 100th Street
Introduction and 123 black and white photographs by Bruce Davidson. Design: Elton Robinson. Editing: Bruce Davidson . 4to (cm 30x28). pp. 130. . Molto buono (Very Good). Lievissime fioriture in prossimità del dorso (Very slight yellowings near the spine). Prima edizione (First edition). . For two years Bruce Davidson photographed one block in East Harlem. He went back day after day, standing on sidewalks, knocking on doors, asking permissions to photograph a face, a child, a room, a family. Through his skill, his extraordinary vision, and his deep respect for his subjects, Mr. Davidson's portrait of the people of East 100th Street is a powerful statement of the dignity and humanity that is in all men.
Con un testo di Mark Haworth-Booth ("Before the moment: looking back at 1960"). Edizione inglese . 4to (cm 29,5x29). pp. 144. . Perfetto (Mint). . Nuova edizione (New Edition). .

DAVIDSON, Bruce (Oak Park, 1933)
Nature of Los Angeles 2008-2013
Text and 30 images in black and white by Bruce Davidson / Testo e 30 fotografie in bianco e nero di Bruce Davidson . 4to (cm 30x30). pp. 68. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). .

Davidson, Bruce:
Bruce Davidson. Photographs. Introduction by Henry Geldzahler. With 130 Illustrations.
Gutes Exemplar; der Umschlag stw. leicht nachgedunkelt u. berieben. - Englisch. - Mit einer Einführung von Bruce Davidson. - Bruce Davidson (* 5. - Bruce Davidson … (wiki) // Bruce Davidson's subjects are not mounted on a pin like a precious butterfly, nor are they oddities in the tradition of P. T. Barnum or Madame Tussaud. If the poetry in a Davidson essay can be described, it is in the total sense it gives us of the subject; past, present and even destiny are held in suspension for our delectation and for our improvement. The subject is not exhibited; it is revealed, and though we may be delighted, our best instincts are also brought very much to the fore. Tolstoy argued that good art is good for you. Bruce Davidson's revelations of human dignity in the face of many kinds of adversity make good art and present a good example. The development in Bruce's work over the entire span of his career is visible in the contrast between the painterly evocation of Montmartre and the artist's studio in his earliest essay (1958) to the more resonant poetry and sharp reality of the Garden Cafeteria (1974). The sentiment in the earlier photos does not descend to sentimentality; it is deeply felt. The clothing in which these feelings are draped, however, is borrowed. It is particularly fitting today for the work of a young artist to be perceived as having come from somewhere. Fashionable revolutionaries often make the mistake of throwing out the past rather than criticizing it and building on it. Only the primitive artist, the first caveman, invents the very idea of art. Pure invention in the wake of historical development is usually arbitrary or impoverished. Thus, judging from the richness and breadth of Bruce Davidson's mature work, it is not surprising that his first effective photographs resume much of the history of photography up to the moment at which they were shot. … (H. Geldzahler) // INHALT : Widow of Montmartre ------ The Dwarf ------ Brooklyn Gang ------ England and Scotland ------ Sicily ------ Black Americans ------ The Bridge ------ Los Angeles ------ The New Jersey Meadows ------ A Trip West ------ Topless Restaurant ------ Welsh Miners ------ East 100th Street ------ The Cafeteria. Davidson, Bruce; Bengie; Hass, Emily
Brooklyn Gang: Summer 1959
98, [2], pages. 67 Gravure plates. "In the spring of 1959 I met a group of teenagers in Brooklyn who called themsleves 'The Jokers.' I found myself involved with a group of unpredictable youths who were mostly indifferent to me. In time they allowed me to witness their fear, depression, and anger." - page 81. "The beautiful adolescents that fill the pages of this book exude a cool sensuality which came by way of the young Brando and Dean, and traveled from American shores around the world. Davidson has created an exquisite photographic elegy for a time when, in retrospect, we all seemed young." - Publisher. Lavishly produced. Clean, bright and unmarked with very light wear. Tight and square. Dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. 29 x 26 cm. An excellent copy. Book
