From the publisher: "German photographer Thomas Demand (b. 1964) is one of the most highly acclaimed artists of his generation. Like many of his contemporaries, his work investigates the nature and process of photography while exploring the role of the media in our culture. Demand begins his process with images of highly charged locations, usually interiors. He obtains these images from a variety of sources, including newspapers, the Internet, and even his own memory. Demand then builds life-size paper and cardboard models of these places, which in turn become the "subjects" of his large-scale photographs. While the artificiality of these images may not be immediately apparent, upon detailed examination, one can see that details are missing (like light switches), and everything has a hint of peculiarity. In describing his work, Demand has said, "The surroundings that I portray are, for me, something untouched - a utopic construction. ill., br. Leonilda Prato (Pamparato 1875-Torino 1958) fu tessitrice, figlia ribelle, musicista di strada, viaggiatrice, sposa di Leopoldo, madre di quattro figli. Era l'inizio del Novecento quando incontrò - senza cercarla - l'arte della fotografia, e se ne innamorò. Ne apprese i rudimenti e le tecniche, ne fece suo il segreto. Quindi continuò a viaggiare, ma nulla era più lo stesso: filtrata dalle lenti dei suoi obiettivi, la realtà prese nuova vita e forme nuove. Nei paesi che attraversò e nella sua terra d'origine le persone divennero il suo orizzonte, i ritratti la sua cifra. Centinaia di uomini e donne, impettiti nelle pose di rito, la videro sparire sotto al drappo nero dove il contatto umano assumeva un valore metafisico: in un istante di pura connessione uno scatto valeva l'eternità. Leonilda amò i suoi soggetti e tra loro specialmente le donne, che appartenevano al suo mondo e nelle quali si riconosceva. Le guardò come sapeva che avrebbero desiderato essere guardate, con tenerezza ed empatia, rese i loro gesti aggraziati, mise foglie e fiori tra le loro mani e provò a farsi regalare un sorriso. Fotografò bambine, fanciulle vestite con l'abito buono, madri attorniate da figli, signore con gli ombrellini, donne indecifrabili come creature soprannaturali restituendoci la potenza di un contatto umano profondissimo. Documentò il mistero del femminile e si fece testimone di un tempo, di un mondo destinato a dissolversi. Questo libro di ritratti è un tributo a Leonilda, fotografa ambulante che amò la vita con passione mutando pelle al bisogno, adattandosi ai tempi e alle circostanze. Ed è un omaggio a quelle - per noi - "perfette sconosciute" capaci di raccontarci tanto di sé semplicemente lasciandosi ammirare.
