Leo Dohmen was with Raoul Ubac and Marcel Lefrancq one of the few representatives of the surrealist photography in Belgium. He was a legendary figure in the post-war Antwerp artistic circle. Because of his tumultuous and flamboyant lifestyle he was his friends gave him the nickname "the Pirate'. Dohmen was a man of seven crafts: chemist and engineer at Agfa Gevaert and Esso, a bartender from an illegal nightclub, an art dealer and a gallery owner and - especially - photographer. In his surrealist photographs, collages and assemblages he was always looking for a shock effect that he reached through the combination of strange elements. Leo Dohmen è stato, con Raoul Ubac e Marcel Lefrancq, uno dei pochi rappresentanti della fotografia surrealista in Belgio. Era una figura leggendaria nel circolo artistico di Anversa del dopoguerra. A causa del suo stile di vita tumultuoso e sgargiante, i suoi amici gli diedero il soprannome di "Pirata". Dohmen era un uomo dai sette mestieri: chimico e ingegnere presso Agfa Gevaert ed Esso, barista in un nightclub illegale, mercante d'arte e gallerista e, soprattutto, fotografo. Nelle sue fotografie surrealiste, nei collage e negli assemblaggi era sempre alla ricerca di un effetto shock che raggiungeva attraverso la combinazione di elementi strani.

Doisneau lived in the suburb of Montrouge and he realized his world was going to change, people moved to more comfortable homes, forever upsetting the Paris he loved. But Doisneau records everything with sweetness, not with nostalgia or anger. Indeed, he "does not hide his happiness in photographing his environment in full change, where traditions persist in spite of everything" (cfr. Paris Le livre de photographie 251). The secret of his photographs is precisely in the enchantment, in the affectionate irony, in the humanity that he transmits photographing simple people and their rituals, their customs, at the market or in a brasserie, kissing or discussing animatedly. Doisneau produces a series of volumes of this kind, the first of which is the famous "Banlieue de Paris" of 1949. This delightful small-format volume contains many of his most important photographs. ----------- Doisneau ha vissuto nel sobborgo di Montrouge e capisce che è imminente la fine di un mondo, le persone vengono dirottate verso abitazioni più confortevoli, stravolgendo per sempre la Parigi che lui ama. Ma Doisneau registra tutto con dolcezza, non con nostalgia o rabbia. Anzi, "non nasconde la sua felicità nel fotografare il suo ambiente in pieno cambiamento, dove le tradizioni perdurano malgrado tutto" (Paris Le livre de photographie 251). Il segreto delle sue fotografie sta proprio nell'incanto, nell'affettuosa ironia, nell'umanità che trasmette mentre fotografa le persone semplici e i loro riti, le loro usanze, mentre sono al mercato o in una brasserie, mentre si baciano o discutono animatamente. Doisneau realizza una serie di volumi di questo genere, il primo dei quali è il famoso "Banlieue de Paris" del 1949.
