Een liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint-Germain-des-Prés is een van de belangrijkste boeken uit de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse fotografie. Het verscheen voor het eerst in 1956, bij De Bezige Bij, en betekende de doorbraak van fotograaf Ed van der Elsken. Door middel van een filmische opeenvolging van tekst en korrelige zwart-witfoto's vertelt Van der Elsken ons een semiautobiografisch liefdesverhaal: dat van Manuel en Ann, gesitueerd in de grimmige sfeer van het naoorlogse Parijs van de jaren 1950. Van der Elsken volgt Ann met zijn camera op haar zwerftocht door Parijs, terwijl ze danst, drinkt, flirt, vecht, slaapt, verliefd wordt... Ann is eigenlijk de legendarische bohemienne Vali Myers, een Australische kunstenares die bevriend was met Cocteau en Genet. Maar Van der Elsken geeft van bij het begin aan dat 'de handeling van het boek en de karakters die er een rol in spelen, ontsproten zijn aan de fantasie van de auteur'. Een liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint-Germain-des-Prés is een cultboek geworden, dat tot nu toe bijna onvindbaar was.

It has been a privilege to travel and work in Africa over the past few decades. In all these years, however, I have also been an eyewitness to the changes the black continent has undergone. Ik kan gerust stellen dat een fotoshoot met hem in geen enkel opzicht gelijkt op een shoot met eender welke andere fotograaf. Niet zozeer omdat ik voordien nog nooit naakt had geposeerd maar wel omwille van de manier waarop hij ons als model bij zijn kunstproject weet te betrekken. Als geen ander slaagt hij erin je mee te trekken in de wereld die hij wil creëren, waardoor ik me niet louter model voelde, maar eerder de hoofdrolspeler in een verhaal dat veel verder reikt dan een verzameling uitzonderlijke foto?s. Ebony is zo?n verhaal. De vrouwen in dit boek zijn geen toevallige anonieme passanten maar mensen van vlees en bloed. Dat de modellen, zowel professioneel als niet-professioneel, zo waarachtig en zelfbewust in beeld komen en naar de lens kijken, heeft er alles mee te maken dat ze zich net als ikzelf volwaardig hebben gevoeld en vooraf de context kenden en geloofden in het ultieme doel van het concept. Ebony voelt voor mij als een vlucht uit het grijze, het gewone, het alledaagse van het leven.
