Lehnert & Landrock was a photographic studio run by Rudolf Franz Lehnert (1878-1948) and Ernst Heinrich Landrock (1878-1966) active in Tunisia and Egypt in the early 20th century, noted for producing Orientalist images. Rudolf Franz Lehnert and Ernst Heinrich Landrock produced images of North African people, landscapes, and architecture for a primarily European audience. Taking this as a starting point, the exhibition was prepared in collaboration between Arkas Art Center and IFOD (Izmir Art of Photography Association) to pass on the Izmir of 2015. The focus was the specifics of Izmir that distinguished it from other cities, adding value to the city. The architecture of the city, its nature, people, business and residential districts, which give clues to the social and cultural life of the city, have all been immortalized through a selection of photographs made over a year. The artists used their lenses to show the memorable beauties of the various districts and neighborhoods of the city, Basmane, Bergama, Bornova, Karsiyaka, Kordon, Ödemis, Selçuk, Urla, using the universal language of photography. The photography exhibition aims to document and leave behind for generations to come the present of Izmir through the lenses of photography artists from Turkey and abroad. [Exhibition catalogue]. a most interesting exhibition about three Japanese men: Yamada Torajiro (1866-1957), Ito Chuta (1867-1954), and Otani Kozui (1876-1948), these threemen visited Istanbul during the early stages of Turkish-Japanese relations. The endeavors and experiences of these three Japanese men in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic inspired this exhibition. Businessman and tea master Yamada, architect, professor, and the first Japanese architectural historian Itô, and Buddhist abbot and researcher Ôtani were three outstanding men who left their mark in Japan through their respective fields. Coincidentally enough, the three Japanese grew interested in the Ottoman Empire/Turkish Republic roughly around the same period, in late 19th to early 20th centuries, and left behind works that related their experiences in Turkey. The exhibition is based on the views and experiences of these three Japanese men; through new finds, historic works, and documents, including objects from Japanese and Istanbul museums that are displayed for the first time, it conveys the Ottoman Empire and Turkey impressions of Japanese from the Meiji period. Through the adventures of these three Japanese men, the exhibition explores a multi-layered window of history that opens from Istanbul to the world. The images uncover delight in the otherwise sterile and banal environment. It is also rather revealing through the eyes of the younger generation how the previous generation have persevered in what seemed like their destined roles as anchors for a more stable society.

And when, soon after, the French government purchased an armless statue of Aphrodite on the island of Melos and displayed it triumphantly in the Louvre, it too identified France as the natural heir of antiquity. The Austrians and Germans, for their part, unearthed and brought home vast quantities of sculpture and architecture from throughout the Near East. Beginning in the mid-eighteenth century, European scholars and amateurs poured into Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Mesopotamia to explore, dig, catalogue, and cart home the material remains of the ancient world. The collections they amassed became celebrated museums; the scholarly techniques they developed formed the foundation of modern, scientific archaeology. But at the time, the lands they traversed and the antiquities they found belonged neither to the empires of Europe nor to local states; rather, the entire territory was the possession of the Ottoman Empire. What did the Ottomans think of the European passion for die past? What was their own view of the ancient worldand its heritage?Scramble for the Past explores the historiography of archaeology in the Ottoman domains between the founding of London's British Museum in 1753 and that of Istanbul's Evkaf Museum (Museum of IslamicArt) in 1914. From its birth in 1839, photography has participated in modernity as much as it has symbolized it. Its capacity to record and display and its claim to accuracy and truth intricately linked the new technology to the dynamism of the modern world. The Ottoman Empire embraced photography with great enthusiasm. In fact, the impact and meaning of photography were compounded with the thrust of modernization and westernization of the Tanzimat movement. By the turn of the century, photography in the Ottoman lands had become a standard feature of everyday life, of public media, and of the state apparatus. This volume explores some of the most striking aspects of the close connection between photography and modernity with a particular focus on the Ottoman Empire. Much of the material concerns the display of modernity through photography, as was so often the case in the photographs and albums commissioned by the Sultan to showcase his empire for Western audiences. Nevertheless, modernity was often embedded in the photographic act, transforming it into a common and mundane practice. Be it in the form of images disseminated through the illustrated press, postcards sent out to family members or anonymous collectors, portraits presented to friends and acquaintances, or pictures taken of employees and convicts, photography had started to invade practically every sphere of public and private life. The visual world we live in today was born some 150 years ago. Camera Ottomana is both a homage to, and a critical assessment of, the local dimension of one of the most potent and transformative technological inventions of the recent past.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.
