Cities of the three books: Jerusalem and the Holy Land in 19th century photographs.= Üç kitapli kentler: 19. yüzyil fotograflarinda Kudüs ve kutsal topraklar.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Small 4to. In English and Turkish. 165 p., b/w and color ills. Cities of the three books: Jerusalem and the Holy Land in 19th century photographs.= Üç kitapli kentler: 19. yüzyil fotograflarinda Kudüs ve kutsal topraklar. The Album of Grand Vizier Kâmil Pasha and Local Photographers: The photograph album presented to Grand Vizier Kâmil Pasha encompasses 111 images of the Holy Land. A portion of these photographs was taken by Garabed Krikorian of the Jerusalem Armenian community. The person who introduced Krikorian to the art of photography was none other than Yessayi Garabedian, the first local photographer of Jerusalem. He established his own photographic studio in 1859 within the Jerusalem Armenian Monastery. Mendel John Diness, Peter Bergheim, Davud Sabunci, Leon Katz, Khalil Raad and Yeshayahu Raffalovich are recognized as outstanding masters of local photography in late-19th century. Jerusalem: The City of Faith and Passion: Prophets and kings constructed hand in hand the mythology of Jerusalem. The thrones of the heavens and earth were set in this city. From David to Solomon, and from Jesus Christ to Muhammad, it was the singular pole in a geography of faith. In the Middle Ages, it replaced Rome, which regarded itself as the navel of the earth. Jerusalem was the dream of those who embraced the Cross and the indispensable, holy land of Umayyad, Abbasid, Ayyubid, Fatimid caliphs, as well as Mamluk and Seljukid sultans. The city found peace under Ottoman rule from 1516 until 1917. Yet, before and after that time, the tears of humanity did not subside. First Photographers in the Holy Land: In 1833, British explorer Frederick Catherwood used the camera lucida in the Holy Land and produced the very first images of the Noble Sanctuary (Haram al-Sharif). Catherwood, who unveiled the Sacred, was followed by Scottish minister Alexander Keith. Keith's goal was to corroborate the text of the Holy Bible with images. This concept set the groundwork for British picturesque photography, which was particular to the Orient. In 1844, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey experimented with a different style and focused on Islamic architecture in the Holy Land. Thus came along the first products of French documentary photography vis-à-vis the British picturesque. The photographers who convey to us today the history of the Holy Land have, to a large extent, emerged out of this school.

The city of Bursa, situated in the north-west of Turkey, has been for millennia a settlement area at the intersection of travel and trade routes. From 1335 to 1363 it was the capital of the Ottoman State. IRCICA has published a deluxe album of photographs of Bursa dating from the period of Sultan Abdulhamid II, i.e. from the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th century. The photographs were selected from the collections contained in the archives of IRCICA. The album contains photographs of districts, gates, mosques, tombs, fountains, roads, bridges, ceremonies, personalities. There is also a section on "Photographers and Photograph Studios". This album appeared in the 2011 Evliya Celebi Year declared by UNESCO, since for Evliya Celebi (1611-1684) Bursa was of special importance. It was the first city that he visited outside Istanbul and one of the very few he traveled to specifically to learn about it. I've spent thirty three years of my life working for this company however. I did not have any significant project related to this environment. [Exhibition catalogue]. The exhibition showcased works by masters of photography, who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the XIXth to the early years of the XXth century. Comprised from a selection of photographs from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photograph Collection and from private collections, it revealed the magnificent structures, daily life and intriguing personalities of an Istanbul past. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city, an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as Ali Sami Aközer, Félice Beato, Guillame Berggren, Abdullah Biraderler, Gülmez Biraderler, Ernest Edouard de Caranza, Sebah & Joaillier, Maurice Meys, Ali Enis Oza, James Robertson and Elisa Pante Zonaro document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, taking us on a pleasurable journey through the photographs they took in the difficult and challenging techniques of the time.

Izmir: A legacy for tomorrow.= Izmir: Yarinlara bir miras.= Izmir: Un héritage pour demain. Translated by Jean Luc Maesso et alli. Texts by Tufan Atakisi et alli.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). In English, French, and Turkish. 152 p., color and b/w ills. Izmir: A legacy for tomorrow.= Izmir: Yarinlara bir miras.= Izmir: Un héritage pour demain. Translated by Jean Luc Maesso et alli. Texts by Tufan Atakisi et alli. Cities, as centers of living together, are also entrusted to us from the previous generation and which we will entrust to the next generation, in addition to their function of being living spaces. Physical, social and cultural changes that cities experience over time in different historical periods, the traditional texture, the newly developed identity are most importantly found in city photographs. Taking this as a starting point, the exhibition was prepared in collaboration between Arkas Art Center and IFOD (Izmir Art of Photography Association) to pass on the Izmir of 2015. The focus was the specifics of Izmir that distinguished it from other cities, adding value to the city. The architecture of the city, its nature, people, business and residential districts, which give clues to the social and cultural life of the city, have all been immortalized through a selection of photographs made over a year. The artists used their lenses to show the memorable beauties of the various districts and neighborhoods of the city, Basmane, Bergama, Bornova, Karsiyaka, Kordon, Ödemis, Selçuk, Urla, using the universal language of photography. The Crescent and the Sun. Three Japanese in Istanbul: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui.= Hilâl ve Günes. Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 398 p., color ills. The Crescent and the Sun. Three Japanese in Istanbul: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui.= Hilâl ve Günes. Istanbul'da üç Japon: Yamada Torajiro, Ito Chuta, Otani Kozui. [Exhibition catalogue]. a most interesting exhibition about three Japanese men: Yamada Torajiro (1866-1957), Ito Chuta (1867-1954), and Otani Kozui (1876-1948), these threemen visited Istanbul during the early stages of Turkish-Japanese relations. The endeavors and experiences of these three Japanese men in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic inspired this exhibition. Businessman and tea master Yamada, architect, professor, and the first Japanese architectural historian Itô, and Buddhist abbot and researcher Ôtani were three outstanding men who left their mark in Japan through their respective fields. Coincidentally enough, the three Japanese grew interested in the Ottoman Empire/Turkish Republic roughly around the same period, in late 19th to early 20th centuries, and left behind works that related their experiences in Turkey. The exhibition is based on the views and experiences of these three Japanese men; through new finds, historic works, and documents, including objects from Japanese and Istanbul museums that are displayed for the first time, it conveys the Ottoman Empire and Turkey impressions of Japanese from the Meiji period. Through the adventures of these three Japanese men, the exhibition explores a multi-layered window of history that opens from Istanbul to the world.
