In 50 anni di racconti non mancano di certo le suggestioni: da Bagheria alle Ande boliviane, dalle feste religiose - esordio della sua carriera - all'esperienza nel mondo della moda, iniziata con Dolce & Gabbana e Marpessa. Poi il paesaggio, i bambini, la grande avventura con l'agenzia foto-giornalistica Magnum e infine i ritratti dei suoi amici, grandi maestri del mondo dell'arte e della cultura come Sciascia, Marquez, Montalban, Borges, solo per citarne alcuni. «Come fotografo mi considero un reporter. Come reporter il mio riferimento fondamentale è quello del mio maestro per eccellenza, Henri Cartier Bresson, per il quale il fotografo deve ambire ad essere un testimone invisibile, che mai interviene per modificare il mondo e gli istanti che della realtà legge e interpreta. Ho sempre fatto una distinzione netta tra le immagini trovate e quelle costruite. Ho sempre considerato di appartenere al versante dei fotografi che le immagini le trovano, quelle che raccontano e ti raccontano, come in uno specchio. Al volgere del XX secolo, il fotografo americano Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) si imbarcò in un progetto monumentale, uno studio dei Nativi dell'America del Nord che lo avrebbe impegnato per i successivi trent'anni. Con un approccio ambizioso dal punto di vista tanto artistico quanto scientifico, registrò con parole e immagini i resti di uno stile di vita tradizionale che stava già iniziando a scomparire. Con instancabile dedizione, Curtis visitò personalmente 80 tribù dal confine con il Messico allo stretto di Bering, conquistando la fiducia della popolazione con pazienza e sensibilità. L'opera fu stampata in 20 volumi tra il 1907 e il 1930 con il titolo The North American Indian, ma data la tiratura limitata a soli 272 esemplari, gli originali divennero presto estremamente rari. Questo libro raccoglie l'intero portfolio di Curtis sui Nativi americani in un unico volume, rendendo nuovamente accessibile il suo straordinario lavoro, che rappresenta tanto un prezioso documento storico, quanto un trionfo dell'arte fotografica.
