Ihre Erscheinung ist eher durchbrochen, denn verwoben. H. Damisch nennt die Wirksamkeit der "Unterseiten" der Bilder Verknotung, nicht Ineinanderliegen von Welt und Wahrnehmung. Diese Konfusion des Figur / Grund / Verhältnisses durchzieht die gesamte Arbeit von Martin Eiter. Die Auflösung von Wahrnehmung in Schneetreiben liegt im ,Umspringen' von Fläche und Form. Wenn leicht schmutziges Grau, etwas zartes Rosa durch einen schiefen, angedeuteten Bogen zu einem weiten Feld sich öffnen und links, kohlschwarz wie Raben, zerfledderte Flecken ganz an der Oberfläche gesetzt sind, hält sich das Bild in einem offenen Spannungsverhältnis von Fläche und Malerei. Das nicht reduzierbare Paradox der "flachen Tiefe" und eine daraus resultierende Dichte, Dickheit, bilden das Grundparadigma der modernen Malerei. "Ein Bildnis enthält zugleich Abwesendes und Gegenwärtiges, Angenehmes und Unangenehmes", schreibt Pascal und fügt hinzu: "die Wirklichkeit schließt Abwesenheit und Mißfallen aus". Im Bild, als einer immateriellen Textur, besitzen die Abwesenheiten positive Existenz; so wird die Malerei zum Modell unseres komplexen Wesens. Vor den Flecken und den Linien kommen die Knoten. Ihr logischer Vorrang erweist sich aus ihrer Topologie - nicht sichtbarer Einschnitt, Koinzidenz. Ein Knoten bezeichnet den Ort, an dem etwas statt hat, sich ereignet. Er ist der Sturz die Treppe hinab und die Form des Teichs - seine stete Veränderung im sanften Schlag der Wellen gegen die Böschung wird sichtbar, als ein Vogel jäh auffliegt vom Ufer. ...
