Ever since Fidel Castro came to power as the leader of Cuba's communist regime in 1959 Havana has remained all but impenetrable to the outside world. The revolution cut Cuba off from the West but at the same time preserved a century of built substance and style through the accident of fmancial stagnation. Without capital investment time stood still and five epochs of architectural style have survived to the present day. From the majesty of colonial city palaces to the half-hearted hope of heroic modernism Engels' photographs show a city in silent transition a microcosm of architecture through the ages. All of the structures picttired here were built in the twentieth century but for the most part they have suffered from neglect in the form of peeling paint and stucco &M grime and abandonment. Yet there is utter beauty and dignity here-a sense of being trapped in time-that is no longer evident in America's everchanging cities. Like the structures he photographs Engels uses a timeless approach to the artistic and technical aspect of his work. He uses a Sinar catnera with a 4 x 5 inch format standing under a darkening cloth just as photographers did a century ago. Using a Polaroid image to feel and see the light Engels takes a single shot of each building. Most of these images were taken during die month of February in 1997 and 1999 respectively. These photographs of apartment dwellings office buildings private residences and places of worship tell a story on their own. Their haunting images seem to speak about more than just the men who made them or the materials they are made of. "Ali Sami (Aközer) is born in Rusçuk in 1866, and moves to Istanbul. Because his family is registered in the Beylerbeyi quarter of Üsküdar, Ali Sami is also called Üsküdarli Ali Sami. He graduates from the Mühendishane-i Berri-i Hümayun in 1866 and becomes a teacher of painting and photography at the school. He is employed in the Ottoman army, and he is also a teacher of phography at the palace and for many years gives lessons to Prince Burhaneddin Efendi. In 1889 he becomes an aide to Abdülhamid II. As a military photographer, he is assigned by Abdülhamid II to accompany German Emperor Wilhelm II during his visit to the Ottoman Empire when he travels from Istanbul to Jerusalem in 1898, and presents an album of this journey to the sultan. After the constitutional monarchy is proclaimed, he becomes a painting teacher at Trabzon High School, and passes away in 1936 in Istanbul". The sultans of the Ottoman Empire traditionally shaped the arts of their day, and their enthusiastic reaction to the discovery of photography was to be crucial in the development of photography in the Empire. This third edition of the book published by YEM Publications has been updated and enlarged to incorporate new information gathered over the years and many new photographs that have been added to my archive. I have made sure that the revised text comprises the latest information available on the subject. Many nation states were created in the former Ottoman territories in Europe, Asia and Africa. I have not included the individual photographic histories of these countries but endeavoured to focus primarily on photography within the present boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. A list of photographers who worked in the Ottoman Empire has been provided to assist all those who are interested in the history of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. The names of photographers that I have come across in documents written in Ottoman Turkish script have been given as spelt. Haunts can be seen as part two of a trilogy which began with Trying to Dance, JH Engström's artist's book project which was short-listed for the 2005 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. At the back of Trying to Dance JH Engström wrote "I'm always looking for presence. Whenever I try, my doubts get unmasked...." These doubts and questions are prelevant in Haunts, but in this volume Engström focuses more on public spaces and life in the streets. At the center of JH Engström's pictures is a strong feeling of being in an endless present tense. The confrontation between "now" and the photographer's memories is inevitable. And he doesn't try to separate emotions from objectivity. His images embody their questions. Haunts può essere considerato la seconda parte di una trilogia iniziata con Trying to Dance, il progetto di JH Engström che è stato selezionato per il Deutsche Börse Photography Prize del 2005. Finally, a friend of Mörel's was asked to photograph random parts of the book's content which was then printed on a fiber based wallpaper material for the covers. Presentato per la prima volta a OffPrint London nel maggio 2015, Random è un esercizio di produzione di un libro unicamente basato sulla "volontà dello stesso mezzo fotografico".Engstrom ha selezionato a caso 60 immagini.
