Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print they have never been examined as a body. His journal which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872 is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the 19th century. "The author possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. This book makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn as they were at the time when they were first made: that is they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh Ruth Draper Margot Fonteyn Moira Shearer Beatrice Lillie Googie Withers Mai Zetterling and many others well known on the stage the films and in similar spheres the costumes of c.1800 to 1926 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. Moore's text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight sympathy and expertise."
