London England: Bloomsbury 1994. Hardback. Date to inside cover. In the early hours of the morning on 25 August 1940 a German plane bombed London for the first time. This raid marked the beginning of the Blitz which saw the devastation of large areas of London and extensive damage to other parts of England particularly Coventry. As a photograpgher for Life magazine George Rodger covered the Blitz as it affected the live of hundreds of ordinary English people. Based in a two-bedroom flat in Swiss cottage for which he paid �1. 7s. 6d. rent per week and reproting to the magazine's office in Dean Street Soho he saw and recorded all aspect of life as the raids escalated: the evacuation of childre the introduction of identiy passes; life underground during the raids the gruelling rescue operations and the attempts by people from every background to maintain morale and continue life as best they could under the constant threat of further attacks. Many of the photographs in this book are already classics of wartime photography many more ar epublished here for the first time.
