Patricia Nelson Limerick's first book surveys a cast of American characters who wrote about their encounters with the deserts of the American Southwest. Her subjects fall into two broad groups: those who hated the desert and by extension wanted to redeem it by settlement and irrigation and those who -- however conditionally -- loved it and wanted to preserve it. The turning point between these two groups fell in the later nineteenth and earlier twentieth century when the railroads and the obliteration of independent Native American cultures had rendered the desert a scene out of the carriage window traversed in ease instead of a horrible wasteland waiting to destroy the naive traveler. Limerick's subjects range from the famous -- Mark Twain whose reaction to the desert inspires some of Limerick's sharpest prose -- to the famous in their own day but now obscure -- like William Ellsworth Smythe. She's pretty hard on almost everybody she treats -- especially Edward Abbey who comes across as something of a charlatan -- except William Manly. Now a professor of environmental studies at the University of Vermont Kaza bases most of these meditative essays on experiences she had in California. With a Buddhist reverence for living things she follows the Zen practice of shikantaza --just sitting--to find serenity and inspiration among trees. She observes the change of seasons with a stately gingko re-visits a commune to renew her acquaintance with a tan oak and madrone dreams as she leans against a massive blue oak. On Arbor Day Kaza joins a group planting redwood seedlings; she makes a pilgrimage to Methuselah Grove to see bristlecone pines and to Yosemite for whitebark pines. Other encounters include red firs alders and sycamores. This is a beautifully written imaginative appreciation of trees. This book records a series of the author's intensely personal sometimes spiritual relationships with individual trees. Her approach is based on her experience as a practitioner of Zen meditation techniques. Kaza's training as a naturalist however gives her essays a more realistic bent; she recognizes the many uses of wood as a raw material--for paper furniture fuel lumber etc.--and does not dismiss the human uses of trees as an evil. Her descriptions of the trees and the life around them and in them are accurate and lyrical although the writing is almost too poetic and intense in spots. This is not a book to be read straight through; it should be dipped into at reflective moments like a book of poems. Notes in the back constitute a bibliography of sorts. Overall the contents and covers are clean and sound. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. Oblong 8vo. 20 pages with four pages of black and white photographs. A 45 rpm EP record of Lyrebird song is enclosed in a sleeve to the inner board. The record is still in it's original plastic cover and is placed inside a record sleeve and attached to the book. The record is in excellent condition. The sleeve has opened slightly along the bottom edge. Lovely photographs of Theresa the Lyrebird and the story of how the author got to know this timid wild little bird. Side one of the record has recordings of 1. - Superb Lyrebird -calling in the deep forest and 2. -Albert Lyrebird side two has 15 recordings of the Lyrebirds imitations and no 16 is a selection of ' how many of the Superb Lyrebird's imitations you can recognize '. In 1965 he arrived in Barcelona where he worked as a free-lance designer. A year later he set up his own studio specializing in corporate identity work for bussinesses and institutions and graphic design for exhibitions and special events. From 1967 onwards he also works as a teacher in Barcelona's Escola Eina as well as other schools and institutions.The Biblioth�que Nationale de France the Mus�e d'Aurillac the IVAM Centre Julio Gonz�lez and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston have photos by him in their collections.
