Photography : Korea
Snapshot Archive of Korean Service of an American G.I. Photographer
Korea 1954-1955. 180 black and white snapshot photographs. Spread across 13 different small processor's albums. About evenly split between two different sized prints: approximately 3 1/2" square and approximately 5" x 3 1/2." Prints frequently notated to versos occasionally to covers of individual albums. A mild curling to about half of the albums with outer wraps sometimes mildly worn. Overall a well preserved group. Very good or better.

An outstanding archive of snapshot photography shot and compiled by a Signal Intelligence Team photographer within the U.S. Army's 22nd Signal Brigade stationed at Camp Coiner in Seoul during the immediate aftermath of the Korean War from about 1954-1955. Ownership is not explicitly identified within the contents here though our source for the archive confidentally names the photographer as a Joseph R. Naccarato of New York. The archive contains its share of typical military "buddy" pics and sometimes banal views of base environs though even this portion approximately 1/3 of the archive achieves an uncommon level of quality. But the clear highlight is the remaining approximately 2/3 composed of uncommonly well executed and sympathetic street-level views of Seoul and its outlying areas in diverse imagery including views of hillside shantytowns bustling marketplaces bold and illustrative signage including multiple views of a bank of seemingly hand-painted period movie posters superb occupational portraits etc. As fine a photographic record of Korean service as we've encountered significant for its cultural views and executed by a seemingly unheraled though obviously skilled and street-adept photographer. paperback

Drag Racing : Vernacular Photography
Snapshots of the 1958 World Series of Drag Racing
Cordova Illinois ca. 1958. 24 black and white snapshot photographs. Single weight deckle-edge prints each approximately 5" x 3 1/2" with a perforated mounting tab attached at left margin. All mounted in a processor's yellow card album and bound via a metal fastener through tabs. Prints each notated over image areas in ink. Trace curling to prints overall well preserved. Near fine save for the notations.

A small album of 24 original snapshot photographs capturing entrants and the environs of a late 1950's drag racing event very likely the 1958 World Series of Drag Racing run over the Cordova Dragway outside of Moline IL. Image highlights include an early shot of a pre-blower era Don Garlits' dragster two views of an Honest Charley's Speed Shop entered Thunderbird and more. The photographs typically clear and well executed appear to have been captured by a young man who is shown twice in the group with his 1958 Impala convertible. The location is not explicitly identified in the images though the design of the starting line tower appears to match identified views of Cordova we've seen in reference and one of only a few non-racing view clearly shows the Centennial Bridge across the Mississippi River which connects Moline to Iowa A worthy assembly of original photographs of a significant and formative period in American competition drag racing. unknown

JOE CAWLEY'S GEORGIA RACING PICTORIAL Interior Title - Original Snapshot Album
Braselton Georgia 1985-1986. About 165 color snapshot photographs each approximately 5" x 3 1/2" tipped onto rectos and versos of 45 white paper leaves. Leaves with computer printed borders for print placement along with type descriptions. Contents removed from a defective original plain binder placed into an archival dust proof model by us. Overall about near fine.

An album of snapshot photography capturing the 1985 and 1986 World of Outlaws circuit's winged sprint car races run over the 3/8 paved oval on the grounds of the Road Atlanta Raceway in Braselton Georgia a motorsports complex about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. Photographed and laid out by amateur Georgia racing historian and photographer Joe Cawley the images are uncommonly clear and well executed with the layout almost certainly done on a period PC. The innovative designs including the addition of garish aerodyanmic wings atop the cars which dramatically increased speeds made a controversial splash in sprint car racing a scene relatively unchanged since the 1930's boom in American open wheel racing upon the circuit's debut in 1978 and are on full display in the more than 160 original photographs here about evenly split between the '85 and '86 events. An original photographic production which intimately captures the 1980's scene of a vibrant and popular working-class American subculture one that long held the fascination of New York artist Sal Scarpitta 1919-2007 who owned and raced his own winged sprint car with an ever-rotating cast of drivers behind the wheel on the Central Pennsylvania circuit under the sponsorship of Castelli Galleries about contemporary with Cawley's photos here. unknown

MIYATAKE Toyo : Japanese Americana : Photography
Japanese-American Flag Draped Casket Photograph
Los Angeles California 1962. Single 8" x 10" silver print black and white photograph. Text in Japanese characters in negative. Loosely mounted in a folding cream-colored thick card frame of the Toyo Miyatake Studio with its stylized signature logo in silver print to lower right of interior frame panel. Trace handling wear to exterior folder. Print fine.

A remarkable evocative photograph capturing the July 12 1962 funeral ceremony of a Japanese-American man identified in the text as Yoshio Yokota b. about 1928. The dramatic scene with Yokota's flag-draped casket at center is set in Los Angeles' Evergreen Cemetery a significant location in the Japanese-American community of Southern California as it was the only cemetery known to bury those of Japanese ancestry during the War. We locate no military records in usual reference for Yokota though his service was likely post-War possibly during the Korean War-era. The folder bears the stamp and the photograph is embossed with the same of Toyo Miyatake Studio. Miyatake was a student of Edward Weston who rose to prominence photographing in the Internment Camp at Manzanar alongside Ansel Adams and Dorthea Lange and remained active along with his photographer sons in the Studio until his death 1979. We know of a duplicate print at Stanford part of a substantial Japanese-American family's photographic archive otherwise most certainly a rare surviving print and breathtaking example of Miyatake's heralded work. unknown

Overall about very good.

About 40 different circa-1960's black and white advertising photographs issued by various corporate publicity departments for a variety of products many unusual. Several feature quintessentially mid-Century home stereo and television equipment and a few are quite obscure including the "Model K-9" a hair dryer marketed to dogs by the Master Appliance Corp. of Racine Wisconsin "The canine set prefers temperature controlled drying" and a leash for children called "Tommee Tippee Playskool's Hand Holder" a coiled cord attached to a pair of what seem to be handcuffs and offering ". mother and child a sense of security along with a sense of freedom." Acquired by us as a group and while a few appear slightly earlier most most firmly in the 1960's providing a rich visual glimpse into consumer products advertising of the era rich in period fashion style design and a presumably oblivious sense of camp. unknown
