In diverse neighborhoods she photographed a range of social interactions and moments of focused solitude; images of people on the move suggest the resurgence of social mobility in the post-war years. She never looked down on her subjects–visually or socially. There is gentle irony to some of these photographs but not the sardonic recording of outsiders and misfits characteristic of the work of some of her contemporaries such as street photographers as Weegee and Lisette Model–whose images Wyman finds occasionally "invasive." Each image is tipped onto heavy cardstock with uncut edges. Unfortunately this set is missing 39 plates 5 in vol.1 all of vol.2 and 9 from vol.3. Each of the string-tied volumes contains introductory and descriptive text corresponding to each of the images. Each page of the softcover volumes and all loose plates contain the ink stamp of a previous owner at the bottom right corners. These scarce promotional pieces of ephemera published by the Karen Ha-Yesod fundraising organization were issued to coincide with the photographic exhibition "To Arms and to Work the Face of the People and the Land". Here we have 5 copies of the same publication one in Hebrew one in English one in Czech one in Yiddish and one in Russian. They promotes both the military training of Jewish soldiers and the agricultural/settlement efforts in building toward a Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine.<br /> <br /> Profusely illustrated throughout with 82 b/w photographic reproductions showing these activities often with visual parallels drawn between the military and land cultivation via the layout and framing of the images especially the front cover. Images throughout also include depictions of other activities including education recreation construction industry manufacturing and Jewish religious activities. The back cover shows a regiment of marching Jewish soldiers lead by a British commanding officer with a text quote from Chaim Weizmann. The publication was edited by Israeli historian and then head of Keren ha-Yesod Nathan Michael Gelber 1891-1966 and features photographs by leading Israeli photographer Zoltan Zvi Kluger 1896-1977.<br /> <br /> Text in Hebrew English Czech Russian and Yiddish.<br /> <br /> The Russian and Yiddish language editions are moderately age-toned throughout with tiny chipping at the upper margin of both covers of the Yiddish copy. It came in response to the Balfour Declaration of 1917 which confirmed support from the British government for the establishment in Palestine of a "national home" for the Jewish people. Keren ha-Yesod immediately established fundraising organizations around the world. Early leaders included Chaim Weizmann Albert Einstein and Ze’ev Jabotinsky. During World War II and in its aftermath Keren ha-Yesod established emergency campaigns sometimes in partnership with other organizations. Funds were also used to help the Allied war effort and after the liberation of the concentration camps to smuggle massive numbers of survivors into the Land of Israel in defiance of British immigration restrictions. Many of Keren ha-Yesod’s leaders perished in the Holocaust; the organization had to recover quickly in face of the staggering needs during those fateful years. <br /> <br /> There are also known Greek Hungarian Polish and French language versions of this publication. After creating models for each scene he invited Francis Bruguière to capture them in his dark and expressionistic style. Beautifully illustrated with forty photographs by Francis Bruguière showing models of the stage from various viewpoints set design scenes of the play and masks of the protagonists. "We modeled five hundred miniature figures in clay to the same scale as the stage and arranged them on the stage model to fit the various compositions The ensemble was illuminated as nearly as the scale would permit as the full size stage will be. White illustrated wrappers with modernist art deco design in grey and a photographic reproduction on the front cover. This extremely scarce publication was issued in conjunction with the 1933 Chicago World's Fair for its "Streets of Paris" exhibit an attempt to recreate the glamour and excitement of Paris with its night life entertainment and romance. This publication contains b/w nude photography of various models often in theatrical poses for the purpose of creating "art subjects for artists" as is stated on the title page most likely to avoid censorship or other legal issues of the time. In most of the images the models are photographed in a manner using various art photography techniques including silhouette mutiple-exposure photo collage and/or superimposition. Other images have additional visual elements or illustrations added via overprinting onto the photographic reproductions such as backgrounds frames borders and/or other modernist design elements. The exhibit was most famous for the controversial fan dance performances of American burlesque dancer and actress Sally Rand. Of interesting note is the statement "Caution - this book is not to be mailed" printed on the title page. Initials N.S.E printed in small type on the back cover.<br /> <br /> Wrappers with a hole towards the upper left corner of the front cover not affecting the illustration as well as some smudges stains creasing closed tears an small wormholes. The wormholes continue throughout the book block mostly to the bottom portion of the pages with mostly minimal effect to the images when present. Most images clean and vibrant. There has been an attempt to repair some closed tears with scotch tape on the title page and the interior front cover. The leaf containing the third and forth images is detached but present. Wrappers in good- interior in good condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. Extremely scarce. Paris Art Publishing Company unknown

This is volume two of the Figure Photography Annual special issue published by Art Photography Magazine. Profusely illustrated throughout with the gorgeous b/w nude photography of Andre de Dienes 1913-1985 the noted glamour and fashion photographer who became among the most influential nude photographers of the era. Also includes reproductions of Dienes photomontage and rayograph work. Each image is accompanied by informative text and often a related illustrated sketch in b/w. There were at least seven annual issues of this special published before it became a quarterly issue known as the "Figure Quarterly". These books were presented as educational manuals on how to shoot the female form and were thus able to skirt the 1950s censorship laws.<br /> <br /> Wrappers with some light bumping to edges as well as some light creases and scratches. Interior with a few faint smudges and creases throughout. Spiral binding tight overall. Wrappers in good interior in very good condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. Collection of ca. 300 original b/w photographs in variant sizes depicting architectural motives in Nuremberg Munich Stuttgart Berlin Potzdam Warsaw Odessa and France spanning the 1930s 1940s and 1950s. The photographs vary in sizes from 2 1/4 x 2 1/4" to 9 1/4 x 6 3/4" - the striking photographs are taken and captioned by Adolf Emilius. The collection contains three photographs with Adolf Hitler. One with Albert Speer and Franz Struff another with Hitler in the Nuremberg opera house in 1937 and one showing Hitler at the construction site of the Zeppelinwiese.<br /> <br /> Starting with a section depicting buildings in Nuremberg and Stuttgart the album shows the German Garden Show the VW factory the German Toy Fair 1953 various city institutions and businesses from the 1950s. Professional settings like the Settlement Exhibition in Munich Ramersdorf 1934 one and two family homes in Nuremberg and surrounding areas by architects Fritz Mayer and Hans Kern including details like entrance lighting and flower windows. There is the iron construction of the ship draw works at Niederfinnow the Arcs de Triomphe in Brandenburg and Munich the Berlin Dome and the Charlottenburg Castle the broadcasting center the Haus der Deutschen Kunst and the State Opera in Munich the Sanssoucie castle in Potsdam and the Brandenburg Gate.<br /> <br /> Contains a group of four sepia-toned photographs of wooden buildings designed by the architect Julius Schulte -Frohlinde for the Olympic Games 1936 in Berlin. Some of these buildings Rheinlandhalle Berliner und Hamburger Halle depicted here were transported to Nürnberg after the Olympic Games and reassembled on the Nazi Rally Grounds in the northeast part of the city called the KdF-Stadt Kraft durch Freude City. They were used by the organization to entertain the attendants of the NSDAP Rallies in 1937 and 1938. The center of this city was a bell tower also depicted here playing the key note of the KdF every thirty minutes: "Freut Euch des Lebesn Enjoy Life." <br /> <br /> The second half of the photo-album contains some 120 b/w photographs incl. few photographic postcards depicting exteriors and interiors of buildings associated with Nazi institutions or events e.g. three photographs of models including of the Haus der Kunst München the Soldier Hall and High Command of the Army Dresden design W. Kreis and the Advanced School of the NSDAP at the Chiemsee design Hermann Giesler. It includes photographs of the exhibition "Siedlungsausstellung" in Munich showing the sample settlement Ramersdorf the epitomization of the National Socialist settlement idea. In short order 192 single family homes were built in the Munich district of Ramersdorf under the direction of the architect Guido Harbers. Agadati the renowned dancer and choreographer known for interpreting Jewish folk dances in a uniquely expressionist style is considered to be the central figure in the development of Israeli dance. He was also a painter early filmmaker and enthusiastic organizer of Purim festivals. Born in Russia in 1895 Agadati emigrated to Palestine in the early 1900s where he studied at the Bezalel Academy. During WWI he studied classical ballet and danced with The Odessa Opera Ballet Theater. After returning to Palestine he often gave solo dance recitals and introduced the Hora originally a folk dance from the Balkans which later became the signature dance of the Jewish people. This unique book shows an album of photos taken in May & June 1913 when James Radley drove from London to Vienna via Paris Mont Cenis Pass Brescia Riva del Garda Dolomites & Loibl Pass. His car was entered in the famous Osterreichische Alpenfahrt a gruelling 2650 kilometre route with 19 mountain passes to drive across in seven days. On the journey out to Vienna one of Radley's passengers was his friend Reginald Hope an amateur photographer who recorded the journey. Remarkably both the car and Hope's photo album survived making it possible to recreate the journey with the same car and repeat the photographs in the identical locations exactly 100 years later in May & June 2013. John Kennedy has been taking photographs since he could first afford to buy film for the family box camera.
