‎AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE IN THE DESERT Abstract from Project D-1 Air Forces Guide of Desert Operations Eglin Field Florida: SAADC Personnel Training Department reproduced April 1943‎

‎A report prepared by the Artic Desert and Tropic Information Center about the maintenance of aircraft in desert conditions illustrated with real photos of military personnel and equipment in the Mojave Desert. The copy of this report belonged to a Lt. Col. Garber whose name is written on the front cover and it is likely his unique production. Of the 47 photographs in the album 30 are 8 x 9 1/4 inches and 17 are 5 x 3 3/4 inches. All bear a caption within the image and show a variety of desert maneuvers taken between October of 1942 and January of 1943 which correlates with the time that the Desert Training Center DTC later known as California/Arizona Maneuver Area CAMA was a World War II training facility. <br/> <br/> Established in the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert the DTC’s mission was to train United States Army and Army Air Forces units and personnel to live and fight in the desert to test and develop suitable equipment and to develop tactical doctrines techniques and training methods. Its first commanding general was Major General S. Patton Jr. who commenced training exercises in late 1941. The DTC was a key training facility for units engaged in combat during the 1942-43 North African campaign. The center encompassed the outskirts of Pomona California eastward to within 50 miles of Phoenix Arizona southward to the suburbs of Yuma Arizona and northward into the southern tip of Nevada.<br/> <br/> The seven pages of text accompanying the photos is concerned with airplane maintenance in desert environments: “The desert can be a greater destroyer of your aircraft your armament your equipment and your supplies than the enemy himself. Sand and heat are your foes. Remember that good maintenance calls for the eternal vigilance against the abrasive destructive presence of dust and sand. It may me a tactician's paradise but it is a maintenance man's hell.â€<br/> <br/> Quarto: title leaf 7 pages of text rectos only and 47 original silver gelatin photographs on 47 leaves. ‎New Orleans 1963. Very Good -. New Orleans: ca. 1960-1965. Large oblong quarto 27x41cm.; brown gilt-tooled leatherette bound with leather strap; 47ll. to which are mounted 311 photographic snapshots nearly all black and white and measuring 8.5x8.5cm. Album a bit scuffed at extremities joints significantly cracked from use and poor quality of leatherette leaves a bit thumbed along fore-edge margins a number of photographs apparently removed though otherwise Good to Very Good contents that remain mostly in fine condition.<br /> <br /> Extensive though sadly uncaptioned personal photo album of a young white woman in New Orleans in the early to mid-1960s documenting her social family and work life date based on shots time-stamped 1963 and 1964. What we have gathered from the contents the compiler worked at least briefly as a server at a diner whose staff was mixed-race though still separated by position: the servers all appear to be white while the grill cooks and kitchen staff are Black. <br /> <br /> Of special note are the compiler's frequent trips to the Pontchartrain Beach amusement park in New Orleans a popular destination in the 1960s though the park was sold and its rides disbursed in the 1980s due to declining attendance. This album however beautifully captures its heyday including shots of the rides carnival games swimming pool tiki bar and a perennial favorite an oversized head inside of which our compiler loved to pose. <br /> <br /> The compiler as well as being a dog-lover was evidently a serious party-goer and additional snapshot vignettes capture various couples making out at a New Year's party or dressed up for Halloween. <br /> <br /> An excellent record of white New Orleans working class life marking the advent of the Swinging Sixties. unknown‎

‎1920. Hardcover. Very good overall. An interesting photograph album of about 88 photographs compiled by an unknown British businessman who visits Hong Kong Colombo & wider Ceylon. He visits Hong Kong as a bachelor and here there are several amusing snapshots of men in kimonos some parading with parasols. Arriving in Ceylon the businessman seems to have been involved with either rubber or coconut plantations. He appears to marry in Ceylon. There are also 13 vernacular shots of Colombo buildings and people including a lovely Sri Lankan woman and a Chinese street seller. There is a charming image of a young coolie asleep on the bottom rung of his rickshaw. A group of 4 photos show a large white ship from various angles includes one of the captain looking at native boats alongside by photographer Karl Lewis possibly related to the Great White Fleet. Then a group of personal family portraits and one of the Forth Bridge in Scotland.<br /> <br /> Lewis was an interesting photographer of the last century. Born in Kentucky in 1865 he started as a dock worker and eventually took to the sea living all over the world. He settled in Yokohama in 1901 had a common law wife and ran small photographic printing business issuing brochures postcards and covers that were sometimes hand colored. In 1905 his catalog advertised "take any photograph sketch or draw produce 100 elegantly colored postcards for $1.75 including shipping." Over the years he found sailors and the American Navy a popular subject possibly because of sales. His postcards & photographs have become very collectible. See great white fleet website.<br /> <br /> Photograph sizes vary 3 ¾ x 4 ¾"; c x 2 ¾"; 6 x 4 ¼";3 ¼ x 4 ¼"; 4 x 5 ¾"; 6 3/8 x 4 ¾". Most images are vernacular some have numbers/letters in the image but no identified photographer other than the Lewis images mentioned above. <br /> <br /> Thick oblong photograph album 11 ¾ x 9 ½ x 2 ½". Green two-tone cloth covers with thick album board varying between brown gray and dark green backing the photographs. Boards a bit speckled corners rubbed and a bit marked but firmly bound. <br /> <br /> An interesting vernacular album of Sri Lanka and the course of this man's life. hardcover‎

‎<p>Woodstock NY 1920-1924. 1920-1924. Fine. - Two original photographs by Eva Watson-Schutze the first is an original 6-1/8 inch high by 8 inch wide brown-toned platinum print photograph of Federico Stallforth and his 2 daughters Anita on his left side and Gioja on his right side. Seated and portrayed from the chest up Federico looks upon Gioja who appears to be seated in his lap while Anita leans into him on his other side. The photograph by Eva Watson-Schutze is signed with her monogram in the upper right corner. The second is an original 8 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide brown-toned platinum print photograph of Adie Estebena Risse the sister-in-law of Federico Stallforth. Adie is seated and portrayed in three-quarter profile from the hips up. Attired in a white lacy dress with a long pearl necklace with a silk head covering. The photograph by Eva Watson-Schutze is signed with her monogram in the upper left corner. Fine.</p><p>Eva Watson-Schutze 1867-1935 was a founding member with Alfred Stieglitz of the Photo-Secession movement. As a young woman she was most interested in painting and was a student of Thomas Eakins. After pursuing photography for some 20 plus years she returned to painting in the 1920's. She was known for her pictorialist style. She spent her summers and autumns at the Byrdcliffe colony in Woodstock New York from 1910 to 1925.</p><p>Federico Stallforth 1882-1960 was born in Mexico of German parents. He was involved with his brother in banking and in 1906 he married Anita Risse. With his family in 1912 he fled the revolutionary forces in Mexico and settled in the United States. For most of the remainder of his life he lived in Woodstock New York and worked as a successful investment banker. For many years he was a supporter of the German government but despite many attempts on the part of the American government he was never convicted of being a spy. In 1942 he joined the American side and worked in the OSS. His sister-in-law Adie Estebena Risse also settled in the artists colony of Byrdcliffe in Woodstock where she occupied herself as a sculptor.</p> Woodstock, NY, 1920-1924.‎
