Three full back postcards of Shanghai published in Shanghai with blue images entitled "Honan Road Shanghai" "Tea House Native City Shanghai" and "Loong Hwa Pagoda near Shanghai". Brewer & Co are recorded in a 1904 edition of "The Directory and Chronicle for China ." as being located at 31 Nanking Road. The author who signs his postcards "D" is evidently a Shanghai photographer: he writes that he worked until 10 o'clock the previous night on the photographs but worries that there is something wrong with the plates. "There are a great many little holes in them -- some not so little. But I think there ought to be a few good results." There is a D. MacLennan listed as in the employ of Chinese Maritime Customs Service Index first appointed in July 1891 as a Watcher and retired in Apr 1928 as Chief Tide Surveyor and Harbour Master in Ningpo. Ancestry.com. Two are signed with the initial "D" the third signed "L. Ross". All are addressed to a Miss MacLennan at 2 addresses in Scotland: 11 Thirlestane Road Edinburgh and at Eglinton Wellington Road Nairn. 5 1/2 x 3 3/4" a few corner defects a diagonal crack in the Honan Road postcard extending a small distance into the image. ‎Algeria: Gervais-Courtellemont & Cie 1893. A series of evocative photogravures of Alger by Jean Geiser a Swiss who spent much of his life in Algeria. Most images are of street scenes daily life portraits of Algerians or architecture. The photographer clearly had great affection and respect for the people he photographed. Apparently rare; OCLC: 40622621 cites only 1 copy at the NYPL catalogued under "Collection de l'Alg�rie artistique & pittoresque" by A Fraigneau 1893 1 volume folio Alger J. Gervais-Courtellemont & Cie. Most of the 43 photogravures are signed "J. Geiser Photograveur Rue Bab-Azoun. 7 - Alger" in the lower right corner with the title in the lower left some of these with image numbers. 25 images w/ Geiser text & titles; 11 with no titles or Geiser attribution; 6 images with the imprint "L'Algerie Artistique et Pittoresque" in the lower right corner without the Geiser imprint and one original photogravure image signed in pencil "J. Geiser Alger" of a young Algerian man. All printed on heavy paper 9 3/4 x 12 5/8" the 6 "l'Algerie Artistique" on somewhat thinner paper. Geiser was also known for boudoir cards none of which there are in this collection. Jean Geiser was born in Switzerland 1848 and moved with his family to Algeria in the 1850s. His father died about 1852 and his mother and her partner continued their work there until returning to Switzerland. Jean founded his own photographic atelier in Alger in the late 1860s at Rue Bab-Azoun 7 and took over the company of Alary & Geiser in 1874. Geiser's studio evolved to one of the most known and successful photo-studios in Algeria with a subsidiary in Blida. Next to his studio photography he covered all aspects of colonial photography on travels throughout the country. His business flourished especially by the success of printed photo postcards which got more and more popular at the end of the 19th century. In France he gained a high reputation as a photographer of orientalist and colonial photography and won several prizes and gold medals at photographic competitions i.e. gold medal at Amsterdam 1892 and at the Exposition Internationale in Nice in 1901. ‎1938. Very good condition. Iconic gelatin silver photograph by one of the foremost American photographers Louise Dahl Wolfe signed in pencil on the verso. The b&w photograph depicts a woman in an elegant cut out one piece rubber bathing suit and bathing cap reclining on a California beach. Natural light creates strong diagonal shadows from the large rocks around her creating a dynamic pattern. Dahl-Wolfe 1895 - 1989 is noted for her striking fashion photography primarily her work with Diana Vreeland editor at Harper's Bazaar and Vogue and consultant to the Costume Institute at the Met. Dahl-Wolfe's images are of strong American women often shot in a natural setting using natural light. 16 x 20". Stamped on verso in ink: "Photograph copyright by Louise Dahl-Wolfe all rights reserved authorized print approved by the Louise Dahl-Wolfe Trust signed Christopher E. Green Trustee." ‎1880. Good condition. Two large impressive photographs laid down on a thick album page and captioned in a period hand in ink below the image. The first titled "New Caladonia" sic shows a panoramic view of a port settlement on a peninsula possibly Noumea or a nearby mining town. The French established a settlement in New Caledonia in 1854 and mining towns for local nickel and gold. 10 3/4 x 8 1/4". Slightly sunned along right edge small chip top edge. On the verso a dramatic waterfall with very tall coconut trees a man standing in the foreground captioned "Fiji". 8 1/2 x 10 1/2". ‎1875. Very good condition. A photograph of the USS Franklin a screw frigate in a Portuguese port with flag flying. Fishing boat in the foreground and houses in the background. The USS Franklin was built in 1854 with partial materials salvaged from the previous USS Franklin and launched in 1864 in Maine. Franklin's first captain was Admiral David Glasgow Farragut Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead!. In 1874 Franklin was the flagship in the European Squandron and visited Lisbon Portugal likely where this photograph was taken. The Franklin operated until decommissioned in 1915. Image is 9 5/8 x 7 7/8" laid down on 11 1/4 x 8 3/8" board with pencil border some slt marks in upper left not affecting image. <br/><br/> unknown‎

‎'Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works Paterson New Jersey.' Large Albumen photograph on printed card of a St. Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway Company Engine‎

‎Paterson NJ 1887. An imposing photograph of a Mogul Locomotive made by the Rogers Locomotive Company laid onto a printed broadside. The photograph measures 28 3/4 x 13" the broadside 32 x 18". Rogers Locomotive was an important New Jersey maker of railroad steam locomotives founded in 1832 whose most famous engine was "The General". This locomotive was built in 1855 and was one of the principals of the "Great Locomotive Chase" an April 1862 military raid in Georgia in which Union volunteers commandeered "The General" and used it to damage the vital rail line between Atlanta and Chattanooga. Below the image at the left is "J. Reid Photographist". John Reid 1835 - 1911 was a noted local photographer who specialized in stereoscopic views and large format outdoor photography especially pictures of locomotives. Reid was commissioned by Rogers to produce images of trains for promotional purposes. He used Scovill's view boxes made by the American Optical Company with Morrison wide aperture lenses and Scovill's pearl paper for printing. Reid printed his own pictures and relied on his own emulsion a superior one which wasn't subject to the rapid deterioration common in photographs of the time. Reid exhibited at Philadelphia's Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and received medals at the Paris Exposition 1878 and Chicago's Columbian Exhibition 1893. The broadside can be dated 1887 because Reuben Wells was appointed shop superintendent in that year; his name is stamped below the other printed printed names below the image which read "J. S. Rogers Pres. Reuben Wells Supt. and R. S. Hughes Treasurer 44 Exchange Place New York". The locomotive in the albumen photograph is marked "St. P. M. & M." and is numbered 324. This was the St. Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway Company which was organized in 1879. Small paper fault at the lower center otherwise very good condition. <br/><br/> unknown‎

Archive of 31 b&w photographs taken by an American amateur ornithologist and traveler in Indonesia accompanied by real picture postcards of the region. 5 snapshots by Theodora Cope annotated on the verso by her. Real photos printed on photographic paper; some snapshots some postcards. They include the Batak peoples in north and central Sumatra. One image includes a group of people all wearing the traditional flat headdress; a herd of water buffalo; graneries sic in a Batak village; village women carrying grain in baskets on their heads; and a view of traditional village houses. Of the 20 postcards 12 postcards issued by the Hotel Centrum Fort de Kock - Padang Highlands. B&w with captions in white at the bottom margin of the image. 8 other assorted postcards from other hotels in Sumatra and one by W. T. Uhlenhuth of Medan. The Copes were an eminent Pennsylvania Quaker family. A distant cousin of Edward Drinker Cope Francis R. Cope Jr. was father of Theodora Cope and an amateur ornithologist. As a Quaker business family deeply involved in its community the Copes were active in many civic educational and charitable projects including the development of Fairmount Park the City's Waterworks the Philadelphia Zoo and Haverford College. An early supporter of the conservation of wild lands Francis donated the tract of land that is now Woodbourne Forest & Wildlife Preserve to the Nature Conservancy the 4th preserve established by the Nature Conservancy The Copes father and daughter traveled throughout New Zealand Australia Fiji Java and Sumatra in the late 1920's. <br/><br/> unknown‎

The southern portion of the Australian Alps is snowcapped for several months each year providing excellent grounds for snow sports." However Australia has been crossed out in pencil and "N.Z." written in. Looks like a promotional photo that was to be published in a travel brochure that had the wrong location in the original title. ‎1895. Good overall. Large albumen photograph depicting a Cingalese Ceylon family consisting of a grandfather father and young daughter all dressed in their finest. The young father holds a cloth parasol. The young daughter about 6 or 7 years old already is wearing fine gold ornaments including necklaces nose ring and earrings. "Colombo Apothecaries Company was established by J. Smith Finlay and W.M. Smith in Colombo Ceylon in 1883. From a small mercantile establishment the Company grew rapidly into a large general store selling most commodities. The name Colombo Apothecaries Company was established in 1892 and by this time already had a photographic department. As an expansion of this department the company acquired the negatives of Charles Scowen Company and moved their studio to Kandy where the climate was considered better for photographic work than Colombo. After the acquisition of the Scowen portfolio the Colombo Apothecaries Company produced a fine catalogue and started selling their photographs worldwide". Our thanks to Palinda de Silva for the above information. This is just such an intimate portrait with the grandfather at the right slightly blurred as if he moved during a long exposure. ‎Cambridge: Hills and Saunders 1855. Very good condition. A striking albumen print of the Eastern Gateway of the palace with a contemporary ink inscribed title 'Entrance to "Duke of Marlborough's" Residence' on the card below the image. The photographer's imprint 'Hills and Saunders Photographers to Her Majesty King's Parade Cambridge and at Oxford Eton Harrow & London' is printed below the handwritten title. The monumental eastern gate a triumphal arch leads to the kitchen court of the palace and is designed with Tuscan pilasters resting on cannon balls. Grinling Gibbons the famous wood carver created the stone urns in 1708. There are 2 statues in niches also thought to be made in Grinling's studio. In 1773 lion heads wreaths and laurels were added by the architect Sir William Chambers. The ornate wrought iron gates were made in the late 1840s by Messrs. Bramah the firm founded by the famous locksmith Joseph Bramah. They were exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851. We are unable to confirm the date of the image but we feel that it would be soon after the installation of the wrought iron gates in the early 1850s. Supporting this early date is the large top hat worn by the man visible in the photograph At the top of the arch is a blank rectangular plaque. This image is prior to the inscription being engraved on the plaque which was not completed until the end of the 19th century. Seven sepia toned photographs produced by the 19th century photographers by the surname Zangaki; these were Greek brothers who specialized in historic or ancient Egyptian scenes for the European tourist trade passing through the Suez Canal. The Zangaki brothers they first worked independently in Egypt during the 1860s then formed a partnership with Hippolyte Arnoux around 1880. Arnoux a French photographer and publisher is noted for recording the excavation of the Suez Canal and publishing the resulting photographs as 'Album du Canal de Suez'. The Zangaki photographs of late 19th century Egypt are prized by historians and collectors for their depictions of Egyptian life at the time. Images included views of the Nile cities and pyramids as well of Egyptians conducting their daily lives. These photographs are signed with the last name Zangaki at the lower left and numbered and titled in white in French at the lower right. The images are city and harbor views. The prints whose images remain legible are: No. 208 and No. 210 Vue de Port-Tewfik a Suez; No. 121 Bateau Olandais passant la courbe d'El Guirsh". 11 x 8 3/4" some ruffling to edges slightly damaged at corners. <br/><br/> unknown‎

‎World War I photographs possibly the 23rd Battalion AIF identifying John G. Hamilton of Victoria‎

‎Australia 1915. Two albumen prints of Australian soldiers one a group shot the other of men on horses in formation. Notes on the verso of an image of 20 mounted cavalry state the date erroneous "Rightmost rider is John G. Hamilton Australia 1920s" and a group shot of 54 men in 4 rows with the caption "John G. Hamilton with Egyptian Force of Australian Army Egypt 1920's and John may be on the 3rd row from the bottom 4th man from the right. " This photo is posed in front of a stone building. There is a record of a John George Hamilton of the 23rd Infantry Battalion embarking in Melbourne on 10 May 1915. The 23rd Battalion of the Australian Army was raised in 1915 as part of the Australian Imperial Force for service during World War I and formed part of the 6th Brigade attached to the 2nd Division. After being formed in Australia the battalion was sent to Egypt to complete its training before being committed to the Gallipoli Campaign as reinforcements in September 1915. They remained on the peninsula until the evacuation of Allied troops in December when they were withdrawn back to Egypt where they were reorganized before being transferred to the Western Front in March 1916. Over the course of the next two-and-a-half years the 23rd took part in a number of significant battles in France and Belgium before being disbanded in mid-1919 following the conclusion of hostilities. Images approx. 8 x 6" mounted on brown card. Images bright with some slight lightening at the margins card bright lower corners a little bumped. <br/><br/> unknown‎
