WORLD WAR I - AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Notes on The Interpretation of Aeroplane Photographs. S.S. 631. IA/42982; together with Illustrations to Accompany Notes on The Interpretation of Aeroplane Photographs. Series A. S.S. 631. A. IA/42982. A.
France: General Staff Intelligence General Headquarters. February 1918. Towards "total knowledge of the battlefield and total control" An impressive exposition of the rarified level reached by fixed-wing aerial reconnaissance and photo interpretation by the last year of the war. Third edition considerably expanded of the slight and fragile text pamphlet first published 1916 paired unusually with the impressive plate volume - both are decidedly uncommon. These were produced in France by Army Printing & Stationery Services and classified "For Official Use Only"; despite a stated print run of 4000 few copies of the pamphlet have survived. The first item contains concise but detailed notes on how to identify various battlefield structures and features - trenches and wire dugouts and mine shafts listening and observation posts batteries concrete structures and so forth - followed by a section on rear organizations - railways dumps billets and aerodromes - noting that from the "enemy's means of supply" and the study of aerial photographs more generally "often his intentions may be deduced". The pamphlet concludes with a brief section of technical notes on the uses of different types of photographs oblique stereoscopic stereoscopic oblique and how these may variously offer enhanced potential for interpreting detail. The substantial atlas contains an exceptionally fine range of high quality photos illustrative of the points made in the accompanying notes. Many of the views are accompanied by maps or sketches to clarify interpretation with locations often identified. Just ten years after the Wright Brothers' epoch-making 12-second flight at Kitty Hawk the aeroplane had become a gun platform duelling in the air and the instrument of accurate distant bombardment; and perhaps most influentially the ultimate mode of reconnaissance profoundly altering the nature of engagement. "At the outbreak of the First World War commanders like British Field-Marshal John French believed that no mechanical platform would ever replace cavalry as a means to conduct reconnaissance. Within months however the horse succumbed to industrial warfare as did traditional methods of cavalry generalship. In the place of cavalry arose the modern military intelligence bureaucracy that employed a Fordist system of photo interpretation in an attempt to achieve total knowledge of the battlefield and total control. The power of photo interpreters in the words of Paul Saint-Amour was 'not in the mere ability to command but in the more rarefied capacity of producing the knowledge that would inform the commanders'" Gettinger. Text foolscap folio. First named with double-folding plate of "Shadow Diagrams" at rear; plate vol. containing around 100 illustrations on 60 silver print photographic plates linen stub-bound on heavy card plate of mark-up symbols and a repeat of the folding plate from the text pamphlet. 11 pp Wire-stitched in light greenish blue printed wrappers: plate vol. folio 360 x 310 mm strong blue cloth-backed greyish-yellow paper-covered boards printed paper label to front board. Touch of foxing to wrappers of text pamphlet and just a little rust to staples top corners of plate volume lightly bumped. Both in very good condition. (Photography) Newton, Helmut
Pola Woman.
Munchen:: Schirmer Art Books 1995. First Printing of the First Paperback Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine paperback binding. Newton's erotic nudes. What a sketch is for the painter a Polaroid fis or this photographer namely the first formulation of a concept the raw material of the imagination as it were. When Helmut Newton published a selection of his Polaroids in Pola Woman in 1992 the subculture called it a stroke of genius. It was the first time that the master let people look directly over his shoulder. We became witnesses to the magic and often intense process by which erotic fantasies become finished images; preliminary stages of a perfectly styled Newton photograph. It is remarkable if not astonishing that even this "raw material" possesses very original qualities and a charm of its own. Schirmer Art Books, paperback

An exceptional Grand Tour souvenir album composed of 26 American Colony albumen photographs of sites in the Holy Land from the Jaffa Gate to the Stations of the Cross Jericho Bethany and the River Jordan to Bethlehem and the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.

Contemporary calf-backed olive/myrtle wood beveled boards binding Jerusalem “five-fold†cross carved on center of front cover minor scuffing rubbing very minor split at center glue seam front & back covers minor chipping to lower rear corner brown morocco rebacking still a VG exemplar w/ gift manuscript note “From Genevieve March 2 1922†on front pastedown presented to James Duval Phelan 1861-1930 banker philanthropist and former San Francisco Mayor and later California Senator 1914-1920. Ironically the album appears to have been presented to the rabid yellow peril anti-Japanese & Chinese politico while he traveled around the World through Japan China Hong Kong India Egypt Palestine Constantinople and Europe with Phelan’s Phoenix rising from the ashes San Francisco bookplate on front pastedown. This marvelous souvenir photo album composed of Ottoman-era albumen images captured not only recreated iconic religious scenes but also captured Jerusalemites in city streets and the Holy Land in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The album opens with the image of the “Street Scene inside Jaffa Gate†which captures Frederick Vester & Co.’s American Colony shop and photography studio in the right fore-ground of the image with bustling street and clock tower prominent in the center of the image. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The series included here which incorporates a view of the room for the Last Supper and a nicely composed image of a beautifully terraced Garden of Gethsemane follows with the Stations of the Cross. The often incorporate residents in their daily lives watering donkeys pilgrims praying at Stations merchants and those wandering through the gates and winding streets of the ancient city. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical “End Times†beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely “celibate†commune controlled by “Messages from God†to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larson’s “Doomsday†Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she “received a Message†that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904.
