Original and Highly Interesting Photograph Album of Early Idaho Resident Engineer A. C. Briney.
Various Idaho locations: N.p. 1917-1926. Original album with 161 silver gelatin photographs almost all of which are work related. An amateur album with almost every image being an early Kodak Brownie photo measuring 2 3/4 x 2 inches Numerous captions. Original tattered paper wrappers. The images all remain crisp and the album tells the story of public works in Idaho around 1920. No photographs have fallen away.The vast majority of early photo albums contain a goodly portion of family related activities. Not so here. Resident engineer A C. Briney was almost entirely concerned with recording the various projects that he was in charge of. He named various duties processes and equipment in remarkable detail. The album open to "1921- My first :Resident Engineer" Job." it bears 13 images of road construction; explosions to remove obstacles grading etc. All of Briney's jobs were in undeveloped Idaho countryside and transportation even at this late date seems to have still been by horse and buggy. The rest of the album shows in remarkable detail the projects he was on charge of; Raising Pony Truss Bridge showing triple jack hammer work and the concrete crew; "Before During & After Pictures 1921 near Cambridge Idaho includes rock drilling and excavation work done using fresnoes and horses and is comprised of about 50 images. Oddly he next shows his work as a surveyor along the Salmon River in 1917 includes heavy machinery; "Construction Work New Meadows Idaho 1922." Finally we can see A. C. at play with a series of photos of a car trip in 1920. In these he labels himself and a woman who likely became his wife Grace Cook. This trip is followed another trip to the Mt. Rainier area and Nisqually Glacier. He must have settled down in Longview Washington as the last two images are of his residence at 612 17th Street. A note on one of the pictures claims he/they won the first prize in the Longview Landscaping and Gardening Contest. N.p. unknown

Original Small Photograph Album Entitled "From the Golden Gate to White Pass and Return.".
N.p.: N.p. ca. 1895. Original string-tied album with alligator-patterned wrappers title in the blank space in the middle of the front. 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches and with ten leaves. Each leaf bears back-to-back photographs so there is a total of 20 photographs all inter-leaved with tissue guards having the same alligator pattern. Every photograph has an annotation in red and in a very legible hand. A lovely little album.In actuality the album is primarily concerned with sights in the Great North. The only photograph taken in the U.S. is a moody and eerie shot of the turbulent waters off Point Reyes. The one succeeding that is titled "Government Street Victoria B.C." Among other pictures are the Russian Church and trading post at Sitka. There is a very nice photograph of downtown "Skaguway." The tour must have originated in Spokane as there is one photograph of "Spokane Passengers at Pitchfork Falls." Their clothing makes this album a tad dateable. It's not a loud declamatory album but rather one of quietness and appreciation. The photographer surely an amateur. had a real feel for the frozen North. N.p. hardcover

Carmel-By-the-Sea: George Allen 1914. The third issue of this elusive publication founded and edited by George Allen a fine art photographer committed to the Pictorialist Movement. This movement had its heydays in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was the predominant force behind art photography of the period. Pictorialists believed that photography should be a medium for personal expression much like painting and drawing. Their goal was to claim a ‘mood’ and many of them were very expert at this. To attain their results the photographers would often manipulate their negatives. To countermand this a group with a diametrically opposite viewpoint formally came into being in 1932 and they referred to themselves as Group f/64 a shutter setting. They had had enough of the dreamy Pictorialists and believed instead in "straight photography" — a style that embraced the inherent qualities of the photographic medium without manipulation. They won. The photographers represented in this issue are Frank Read Alvin Langdon Coburn George Davidson Karl Struss Clarence H. White and others. 200 Original Miniature Photographs of WWI Scenes.
New York: Chas. H. Abbott Photography ca. 1920. Approximately 200 small original photographs 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 inches presenting views of the effects of "The War to End All Wars" on Europe. Numerous views of soldiers living and dead encampments weapons cannons trenches and etc. Numbered in the lower left corner and with "©Abbott" and dated 1919 in the lower right corner; with a few duplicates. The largest such gathering of which we have been able to find record. OCLC records only one gathering of Abbott's was photographs American Museum of Natural History Library and it is comprised of only 13 photographs. A very few with a bit on biopredation to lower corner but in general very good images with fine tonality."Charles Henry Abbott was born in small lumber town of Cambro Michigan in 1894. The family moved west to Portland Oregon when he was young. He lived there until after high school when he followed his brother to Hawaii to work on a pineapple plantation. While in Hawaii he served in the Hawaiian National Guard. Charles was drafted into the Army on Nov. 16 1917. The next four years were spent on the front lines of WWI in Europe as a member of the 23rd Engineers. During and after the end of the WWI Chuck photographed the war-torn landscape. After the war he traveled throughout Europe and eventually ended up in New York where he formed Chas. H. Abbott Photography and sold sets of his war photos. With money from the sale of the photographic sets he was able to open an exotic bird shop on Fifth Avenue with his German partner" M. Carey; OAC. With the opening of the bird shop Abbott left photography behind for quite a few years while he pursued a variety of interests; he owned and operated a dance hall and casino on the Florida coast; a small coffee shop in Carmel CA; was a host at the Desert Inn in Palm Springs. In 1939 Abbot once again took up photography and was hired by the Tucson Sunshine Club to be the "Cowboy Photographer" the handsome Stetson wearing photographer who specialized in taking pictures of important people visiting the Tucson resorts. After that he became a full-time freelance photographer with Arizona Highways being his biggest employer. It is as a photographer for Arizona Highways that Abbott is best remembered Chas. H. Original Photograph Album Detailing the Construction of Philadelphia’s Famed “High-Pressure Fire System.â€.
Philadelphia: N.p. 1903. The album contains 42 silver gelatin photographs each measuring 10 x 8 inches and canvas backed some with annotations on the verso; typed and ms. First photograph with some fading as expected as it was face up a few with short creases some with edge wear but overall in very good condition. Modern wrappers with a photograph from the album laid down on the front.In March of 1900 two of Philadelphia’s biggest insurers the Home Insurance Company of New York and the Williamsburg City Insurance Company told companies and people in downtown Philadelphia that they would no longer issue policies for what they termed a “conflagration district†this was a reaction to the terrible fire of Chicago. Philadelphia’s problems were not its Fire Department deemed excellent at the time nor its population density It was the lack of water to fight fires that worried insurance companies.Philadelphia acted quickly and F.L. Hand the Chief of the Water Bureau designed a “High Pressure Fire Service.†"His plan involved constructing pumping stations to supply various districts by a distribution network separate from the regular low pressure water and sewer lines. Hand recommended two stations be built on the city’s principal rivers which at any given time could deliver no less than 225 pounds per square inch to special hydrants accessible only to the Fire Department. He also strenuously recommended that the mains be constructed of rolled steel pipe rather than the traditional cast iron. “The breaking of a 12-inch pipe in Market Chestnut or Walnut St.†he wrote in his recommendations “under a pressure of 520 feet head would before the flow of water could be stopped cause almost as much damage as a large fire.†All tolled Hand estimated that the design and construction of two riverside pump houses along with their distribution mains would cost the city $702539 and $625975—a fairly large expenditure… The key to the entire system was the network of telephonic communication boxes dispersed throughout the “conflagration district†and eventually the Kensington mill district. When a call came in from a numbered box the station force consisting of the engineer and an assistant could bring all units into operation in less than seven minutes and working pressure at the hydrant was available in a minute.†Philadelphia’s new system constructed by the Hoffman Engineering and Construction Company proved to be very effective indeed so effective that within 5 years many other large cities in the country wanted to emulate their plan.The very first photograph in this album shows the High Pressure Fire Service Pump Station on Columbus now a rather luxurious multipurpose arts center. 31 photos of streets laborers equipment construction &etc. and 11 photographs of schematics for “High Pressure Fire System.†The schematics are all dated 1903. Some of the construction photographs bear a handwritten date on the rear of 1913 but that date is likely when this album was assembled in all of the outside photographs there are only horse-drawn carriages: not a single car. Some nicks to frame and photograph a bit faded but a striking image.Orwig received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Lewisburg Bucknell University in 1862 and then joined the Union army rising to the rank of sergeant. He died later that year in a naval hospital in Washington D.C. He was a member of the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. At the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 the unit fought first on McPherson's Ridge and then on Seminary Ridge before being driven back to Cemetery Hill. Orwig missed that fight as he had already died.Charles Cohill wass originally a farily well know portrait painter who studied under John Nagle. But after around 1860 Cohill began listing his occupation as “artist†instead of “portrait painter.†Photography had come onto the scene. Cohill opened his studio on the popular Chestnut Street. Twenty Poem Cards: Each with an Original Photograph.
New Bedford MA: C. Taylor & Co. ca. 1865. Twenty thick cards 4 1/2 x 7 inches. Each card bears a poem often of a religious nature with an actual albumen photograph at the top. The photographs generally measure 2 /14 x 2 /12 inches and they are all photographs of famous paintings. One cars with a corner excised some general toning but overall in very good condition. We can find no other copies in institutions.This family-ran company started in 1841 as a stationer and bookstore but soon moved into manufacturing. A leader in art industries Charles Taylor and Co. was a huge concern by the 1880s. They had five buildings 50000 sq. ft. of work space and employed over 300 people. It was was the pioneer in the industry of art manufacturing in this country and was then the largest of its kind the annual product aggregating nearly a half million dollars in value. The firm moved into art photography in 1860 and soon its artotypes and ambrotypes made the company famous. It began with a woman Elizabeth Fry an English member of the Society of Friends. She was one of the first worldwide celebrities due to her numerous appearances on Taber products. The Taber artotypes are relatively easy to find. It is likely these inspirational cards were only produced for a couple of years. In the collection offered here one of the cards is dated 1865 and as they came as a group it seems reasonable to ascribe that year for them all.Louis Prang first introduced fancy holiday cards to America. In 1892 his company merged with Charles Taber & Co. to create the Taber Prang Art Co. C. Taylor & Co. unknown

Personal Photograph of an Officer of the 21st Royal Scots Fussiliers.
N.p.: N.p. 1907-1912. This officer was on the rise apparently as he was constantly moved from camp to camp. The album contains 214 original silver gelatin photographs. When he started the officer was based in India and up until photograph 154 all of the pictures are of sights in India Ceylon Mauritius and Rangoon. Thankfully very few of these are family portraits as the officer seemed to delight in the local people and terrain. He is next situated in Pretoria at King's Hill Harrismith. He seemed to have a relaxing time there mainly lounging around the army camp and a very nice one at that Robert's Heights. It was founded around 1905 by the British Army and called Robert's Heights after Field Marshal Lord Roberts. There are numerous captains and generals named in the album but we could not discern the photographer's name but we do know he was a avid golfer. While in Ceylon he took photographs of many of the greens at that course. He did this again in South Africa. There are also numerous photographs of the whole brigade in formation and on exercises. Included but not bound in are eight large photographs 11 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches mainly of military formations. Also included are five medium sized 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches photographs and these are of a more domestic nature. Most of the photographs in the album are 4 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches and the vast majority of them are captioned. All housed in the original album of half red roan over red cloth. A few photographs loose from their stubs but hanging in there front joint split but the album still holding together. Really an essay could be written about this album but the cataloger ran out of time. N.p. hardcover

V.p.: V.p. ca. 1910-15. Thirty-nine 39 vintage postcards and photo by Ezra Meeker 1830-1928 who was an American Washington State Pioneer who traveled the Oregon Trail by ox-drawn wagon as a young man and later became an influential advocate for its preservation. Cards measure 5.5 in. x 3.5 in. - 6.5 in. and are color black and white and silver print. One is plate signed and titled 'The Alamo' 1911. #2 of the cards are corner mounted into a contemporary string-tied flexible cloth album with gilt cover lettering. Four are vertical shots and are just laid in including one of Ezra in his buckskins and cradling his rifle. Two more are fold-out and one shows Ezra at Columbus Circle NY and in the other he is raising the flag at Shoshone Falls. Two of the cards show Ezra at the fields of Dominguez Hill in historic Rancho San Pedro the first air meet in the United States.Ezra Meeker was a pioneer of Washington Territory. He came across the Oregon Trail with his wife and infant child in 1852. In 1853 they moved into Washington Territory and finally settled in the Puyallup Valley. For over 50 years they lived there primarily raising hops. Ezra Meeker was extremely interested in the history of the Oregon Trail and wrote several books and booklets about it. In 1906 at age 75 he travelled the trail in the family wagon with his ox team. Along the way he marked various locations he remembered from his 1852 journey. He also stopped in wherever he could gather an audience to talk about the importance of marking and remembering the trail.In 1910 he repeated the trail by wagon. In 1915 he covered much of the Oregon Trail in a Pathfinder touring car donated by the manufacturer. An airplane carried him over portions of the trail at age 93 in 1924. At the age of 98 he again attempted to follow the trail but became ill and spent some time in a Detroit hospital. He completed his journey by train to Seattle where he died shortly after in 1928." A Single Sheet Bearing Original Photographic Portraits of the King and Queen of Greece as Well as Her Capitol Athens.

The sheet possibly taken from and album but there are no signs of that measures 9 x 11 1/4 inches and it bears three small photographs: George King of the Greeks; Olga Queen of the Greeks and Athens Surrounding these photographs someone has penned in a very neat hand a fair copy of John Milton's poem Athens. A very attractive presentation.The byzantine ways of Europe's royalty never ceases to amaze. "Born a Danish Prince in Copenhagen’s royal Yellow Palace King George I of the Hellenes 1845-1913 was seventeen when he was elected to establish a new dynasty of kings by the Greek National Assembly who had deposed Bavarian-born King Otto and the unpopular Queen Amalia in 1862. King George had the distinction of taking the Greek throne before his father who was to become King Christian IX of Denmark. His nomination was supported by the Great Powers of Russia France and Great Britain. The Greek government held a plebiscite and the British Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh was awarded 95% of the vote but his mother Queen Victoria was adamant that the Prince would not leave England so Prince George took the prize.When King George I sailed into Athens in 1863 he said ‘my strength is in the love of my people’. In his accession speech the King declared ‘in these modern days Princes must strive to be superior in intellect knowledge and goodness to those around them’. A born democrat King George supported the constitutional monarchy and swiftly mastered Greek as well as national sports such as wrestling and running. He established the modern Olympic Games in Athens and opened the summer games in 1896. His endeavors to endear himself to his people earned him the moniker ‘Father of the Nation’ and King George reigned for almost fifty-years" Henry Poole. He was killed by an anarchist in 1913 right after he chose to abdicate the throne. There is a large photograph of a British tombstone on the verso. N.p. unknown

Jerusalem: Jamal Brothers 1910-1921. This very attractive item is comprised of the complete set of 110 photogravures of photographs by Schlomo Narinsky. Each gravure measures 5 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches and all are mounted into archival bifolios measuring 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Each gravure has its accompanying tissue guard. Table of contents printed of three buff sheets which are laid in at the front. The whole housed in a custom gray cloth clamshell case with a deep burgundy morocco gilt lettering label affixed to the front and spine. Very fresh and clean. A pleasure to behold.Just about everything in this cradle of religion is portrayed by these Narinsky photogravures. The photos include a portrait of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda; Portrait of Sarah Aaronsohn; The Outlet of the Jordan River; Ain Fara Ravine: A Yeminite Beauty; A Bedouin and His Pride; The Wilderness of Judea; The Colony of Jann in Galilee; The Mosque El-Aksa; A View of Tiberius; etc. Each print is discreetly numbered in a very diminutive hand in pencil.Narinsky was born in the village of Abyan in southern Russia now Ukraine. He studied painting in Moscow as a child and photography in Paris 1904 and Berlin 1905. He briefly returned to Russia after finishing his studies but immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906 where he opened a photography studio in Jerusalem called "Photographic Unity" with Yaakov Hotimsky. His wife Sonia also a photographer was a partner in the studio. While he was there he made a postcard collection of Palestine. Narinsky's photography was influenced by the works of 19th-century European photographers. When World War I came Narinsky was exiled to Egypt where he worked in photography in Alexandria and then in Cairo. He moved to Paris in 1932 and opened another photography studio. In World War II he was interned in the detention camps in Saint-Denis and Drancy and was released in 1944 as part of a prisoner exchange. The couple returned to Palestine and settled in Kibbutz Ein Harod. In the 1950s they moved to Haifa where they remained until his death in 1960. These sets were put together by photographer Tim Tidal in 1980. In his title list there are 118 entries but the vast majority of copies sold have had 110 photogravures and many have even fewer; one copy at auction recently only had 70. No doubt he ran out of certain images quite soon but 110 seems to be a number that held steady for the majority. [Jamal Brothers] hardcover

A Playful Photograph Album of a Group of Friends from Ontario California.
Ontario: N.p. 1910-1920. Original oblong 8 x 6 inches brown leather album bearing 188 original photographs. Most are snap shot size but some are large. Some fading to a few but overall a nice album with no dropped pictures and in good condition.Seems to be an album of a tight-knit group of friends in eastern Los Angeles primarily Ontario. There are 10 small head shots on the second page with Blanche Bradburn being the wildest and on the page following it shows what appears to be the same women with a title of "Mrs. Warmer's Sunday School Classes." They all appear too old to be taking Sunday School classes so likely they were teachers. Early photograph albums concerning Los Angeles are not so scarce but albums where the main people live in Ontario right at the foot of Mt. Baldy are few and far between. This is born out by the photos on the next two pages which concern a horse and buggy outing to Cucamonga Canyon in 1910. Here we can see that the teachers are talking them on a field trip. They are next off to Urbita Springs near San Bernardino which offered a lake and swimming area along with amusement rides in the location that is now Inland Center Mall. Nest trip; Redondo Beach and Pier but this time the youngsters are left behind. After a brief trip back to Cucamonga Canyon the go by car to Stoddard's Canyon in Idaho where they spend a great deal of time hiking and exploring.The group seems to dwindle in size yet their next trip is a gutsy one; up the Owens Valley to Mammoth. It is here that the captions stop and the album turns into a sort of remembrance of friends and the children they birth through the years. There is one fun photograph of one of the women playing golf. Finally at the end we see a group shot of them all again looking considerably older and wiser but still smiling. N.p. hardcover

Ferndale: N.p ca.1880. Original albumen photograph taken from on high. It measure 8 x 6 inches and is on a mount of 9 x 7 inches. An excellent image of this historic town Unfortunately uncredited.Ferndale sometimes also referred to as "Cream City" is known for well-preserved Victorian storefronts on Main Street and homes throughout the community which are also known as "Butterfat Palaces" due to their construction wherein considerable wealth was generated in the dairy industry. Many of these buildings date from the 1880s. The entire town is registered as California Historical Landmark #883. It is also the northern gateway to California's Lost Coast and the city which is sited on the edge of a wide plain near the mouth of the Eel River is also located near the extensive preserves of coast redwood forests. It certainly looks like an imaghe taken by a professional photographer one with excellent hiking abilities as well. N.p unknown

Three Original Albumen Photographs of the Sami i.e. Laplanders People and Their Dwellings.
Sapmi: N.p. ca. 1900. Three unattributed but very professional photographs of the Sami people and their dwellings. Likely they are from different groups as one family is seen living in an earthen hut and the other in tents. Each photograph measures 8 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches but for the one of the child with measures 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches it is also hand-colored. All on original plain mounts measuring 14 x 17 inches with simple manuscript captions in English. Some browning to mount edges but the images are bright crisp and fascinating.The Sami also spelled Sami or Saami are the traditionally Sami-speaking people inhabiting the region of Sapmi which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway Sweden Finland and of the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The region of Sapmi was formerly known as Lapland and the Sami have historically been known in English as Lapps or Laplanders as they are in these three photographs but these terms are regarded as offensive by the Sami who prefer the area's name in their own languages e.g. Northern Sami Sapmi. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages which are classified as a branch of the Uralic language family.Traditionally the Sami have pursued a variety of livelihoods including coastal fishing fur trapping and sheep herding. Their best-known means of livelihood is semi-nomadic reindeer herding. As of 2007 about 10% of the Sami were connected to reindeer herding which provides them with meat fur and transportation; around 2800 Sami people were actively involved in reindeer herding on a full-time basis in Norway. For traditional environmental cultural and political reasons reindeer herding is legally reserved for only Sami in some regions of the Nordic countries. Like many other native peoples they were persecuted and assimilation was forced upon them up until about 1940. Today they are recognized as a people of their own. Sweden recognized the existence of the "Sami nation" in 1989 but the ILO Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention C169 has not been adopted. The Sametingslag was established as the Swedish Sami Parliament on January 1st 1993. In 1998 Sweden formally apologized for the wrongs committed against the Sami.Sami is one of five national minority languages recognized by Swedish law. The Compulsory School Ordinance states that Sami pupils are entitled to be taught in their native language; however a municipality is only obliged to arrange mother-tongue teaching in Sami if a suitable teacher is available and the pupil has a basic knowledge of Sámi. One would imagine that to be a scarce commidity. In 2010 after 15 years of negotiation Laponiatjuottjudus an association with Sami majority control will govern the UNESCO World Heritage Site Laponia. N.p.: N.p. A large photograph album with hundreds of snapshots. This appears to have been assembled by an Austrian immigrant named Liesel Ficht. Her final home was in the Hollywood Hills. Liesel and her husband appear to have been the host willing or not we do not know to many of their Austrian family and friends as they went almost everywhere. Irvine Park; Hndenberg Park; Joshua Tree viewing; Knotts Berry Farm in 1850; Disneyland in 1956; Doheny Beach now Playa del Rey: Santa Barbara; Bullfights in Tijuana; Agua Caliente Race Track; Las Vegas in 1954 with the Desert Inn and The "21 Club"; Solvang; Rosa Rita Beach; Laguna Beach; San Francisco; Many of Burlingame CA a branch of the family; and many of their trips back to Austria and Germany. Almost all captioned but unfortunately almost all of people. They appeared to enjoy drinking and partying. The quality of the photographs vary widely but still an interesting album of a immigrant family living in Southern California in the 1950s. N.p. unknown
