Group about fine. <br/><br/>From two of the protest signs visible in the photographs: �K.K.K. / DAVIS MUST / GO!� and �STUDENTS / VOTE / SUPPORTS / COUNCIL�S / STRIKE� An exceptional vernacular glimpse into a seminal moment in American student protest: 10 original snapshots of a protest on the CCNY campus. Prints lack notation though our research of visual clues strongly suggests an action in 1949 related to a student strike which sought the removal of two professors William E. Davis and William E. Knickerbocker. Davis while administrator in charge of Army Hall a campus dormitory for WWII soldiers on the G.I. bill relegated African-American students to segregated sub-standard housing. Knickerbocker head of the College�s Romance Languages program was widely known as an anti-Semite who brazenly passed over Jews for promotions new hires student awards etc� Frustration over what were viewed as sham internal faculty investigations of the two professors evolved into a strike ordered by the student council and the council�s mention in signage would seem to place these photos firmly in April a month of frequent protests on campus that culminated in a large scale riot on the 11th which ended with according to news reports of the day more than two dozen students arrested in a brutal clash with police. Additional images include two excellent views of the large and integrated crowd a clear image of a woman holding signage of the Emma Lazarus Division of the Jewish Peoples Fraternal Order distributing lunches and more� A small yet rich photographic group on an event considered the first significant student strike at an American college and one seemingly overwhelmed in scholarship by the protest movements that would explode across campuses in the decades following. Apart from journalism on the riot of the 11th in archived issues of the Daily News we locate little coverage of the event in media and nothing in commerce auction records or institutional records in the way of surviving material on the strike or protests. A scarce vernacular glimpse at the tip of the spear in the American student protest movement. unknown

Cleveland Ohio: Superior Die Casting Co. ca. 1929-1930's. 2 leather photo albums. THE FIRST: Oblong 4to. approximately 12" x 9." Textured limp leather wraps over metal post binding with gilt stamped title to front and holding 31 linen backed approximately 7" x 9" silver print black and white and sepia-toned photographs. Album coming loose from binder assembly at interior. Rear interior wrap waterstained with some mild affectation transferring to verso of final photograph. Photographs well preserved. About very good-minus overall. THE SECOND: Large 4to approximately 14" x 12." Limp leather wraps with gilt titles to front and zipper closure sewn into fabric about edges. Dual snap ring binders mounted to interior of front and rear wraps respectively. Holding printed text leaves and 50 original black and white silver print photographs each approximately 8" x 10." Approximately 1/3 of photographs with a substantial curl at margin nearest punch holes from poor storage. Photographs with punch holes at one margin for mounting. Plastic overlays over contents approximatley 30 of those with bold text on overlays identifying images below. Overall album about very good-minus. WITH An assembly of loose ephemeral material including loose album sheets holding an additional 6 photographs 5 snapshot ; 1 approximately 7" x 9" ; loose ad proofs printed brochures two cloth product bags etc. Ephemera with some mild wear ; overall very good. 2nd album: 50 photographs <br/><br/>An archive of industrial photography from the Superior Die Casting Co. of Cleveland an early maker of cast zinc and aluminum alloy manufacturing and machine components founded in 1919 showcasing its SuperCast product line across two separate sales albums: the first from about 1929-1930 and of 31 original photographs. The second about 50 photographs seemingly from the late 1930's. Majority of images include product photography the earlier prints being stark artful compositions of single component pieces the later being group shots of the same with a strong albeit likely na�ve avant-garde vibe in the layout and design of the labeled overlays. Additional contents include views of industry trade show booths exterior views of company buildings manufacturing and labor views etc. and accompanying the album is a small archive of additional materials from Superior including two cloth product bags blank order sheets a few advertising proofs two illustrated marketing brochures sample business cards etc. adding rich and valuable ephemeral materials to this exceptional archive of industrial design and photography. San Francisco and Honolulu 1958-1962. Fine. A Collection of 7 Typed Signed Letters from Ansel Adams to Nick Dean presented in three custom boxes as follows: Group of 5 Typed Letters Signed by Ansel Adams in custom box. Hawaii and California 1958. Five typed letters all of them signed by Ansel Adams with his handwritten corrections and asides. And too charming not to mention: Where letters have punch-holes for a 3-ring binder Adams doodles faces around the holes. Most are one page with text on both sides two are one page with text on the recto only. Dated 4 February 1958 to 7 July 1958 some are typed on Memos from Honolulu others on Adams' personal stationery imprinted with his San Francisco address. Adams covers the gamut -- from the personal to the professional from the highly technical to the more philosophical. He remarks on his readings Dylan Thomas and also writes "I am terribly worried about photography and my/our place in it. The MMA business under Steichen is a very depressing and destructive situation" but he also talks excitedly about film different types of cameras and darkroom chemistry and techniques. Includes an interesting list compiled by Adams for Dean of his nominations for an upcoming photography exhibition -- it offers 28 photographers 18 of which have little checkmarks in red ink next to them. Marginalia reveals the checkmarks to mean "AA choice -- Shhh!" Adams' passion for photography as well as the landscape are revealed again and again throughout. One aside: "All Washington is trembling with abject fear! I sent off a telegram in the form of a blast to the Secretaries of the Interior and Commerce and to the Director of the NPS on the Tenaya Lake desecration. The battle is joined! I could not take any more of it. Tell Rosy to get the locals ready for a big fight!" / Typed Letter Signed by Ansel Adams. San Francisco 1961. Three pages typed on the rectos only the first on Adams' personal stationery imprinted with his name San Francisco address and phone number and the last two on plain white paper. Signed by Adams with a few handwritten asides and corrections. A dense wonderful letter addressed "Dear Nick and Zabette." Adams talks about the construction of his house in Carmel "road entrance about 1500 feet down the road from Edward Weston's place." and his rough year "I have been low in imagination and only medium in health" but the tone is overwhelmingly introspective philosophical serious and kind. Adams discusses the state of Modern Photography and Art at length what he feels his early influences and "breaks" were and how to make a living at creative photography while staying enthusiastic and true to oneself. Compelling and touching. In fine condition housed in a lavish custom box cloth backed in green morocco with gilt-stamped lettering on spine. / Typed letter signed by Ansel Adams. California 1962. Two full pages typed letter signed "Ansel" with his handwritten corrections and asides dated March 17 1962. On Adams' personal stationery imprinted with his name address 24th Avenue San Francisco and phone number. Addressed "Dear Nick" Adams congratulates him on an upcoming exhibit discusses a Polaroid book cameras Type 49 Type 55 P/N the completion of his house in Carmel health and injuries or lack thereof a De Cordova exhibit and Nick's critique of it and then goes on to examine the state of photography "commercial photography is getting worse." and other photographers including Minor "Jerry" and Don Worth. Perhaps best of all Adams' thoughts on Art are interspersed throughout including but certainly not limited to "I am beginning to think that the trouble with Art is when it becomes Art!" A wonderful letter revealing both the personal and professional sides of a renowned American photographer. In fine condition housed in a blue cloth chemise with gilt-stamped leather spine label. / Overall a spectacular collection -- all letters are in fine condition housed in 3 lavish custom boxes one for each year 1958 1961 1962.
