4 8x10 original photographs of outdoor high-wire trapeze acts 1930s
Circa mid-1930s three of them show a man swinging by his teeth far above the ground there are 2 of the same shot the fourth shows a man or possibly a woman balancing upside-down on top of a pole. The three showing the man swinging by his teeth have a bit of soil and spottiness and the close-up of him has more soil and wear along the lower right side. The one showing the balancing act has a small abrasion about an inch up from the bottom. Found in a Cleveland antique mall probably from the Midwest. unknown

It derives from a local king Antiochos I and is of great interest in itself and for the study of ancient religion and art. The material consists of a large body of monumental sculpture statues and reliefs and voluminous inscriptions about the king and his gods. The monuments are unique in their quantity and in being precisely dated and identified. Together the texts and images provide an unrivalled opportunity for getting close to the quality and texture of an ancient cult. Antiochos I of Commagene c. 69-36 BC belonged at the tail-end of Hellenistic monarchy and the beginning of Roman rule in Syria and Eastern Anatolia.</p><p>The scholarly text by R.R.R. Smith describes the geography and political history of Antiochos' kingdom and looks at the archaeology of his sanctuaries and his royal cult as known from inscriptions. Exquisite photography by Ahmet Ertug concentrates on some of the best preserved sculpture from two sites Nemrud DaÄŸ and Arsameia and expresses in a new way the distinctive character and impact of these extraordinary monuments.</p><p>Roman mosaics from Zeugma on the Euphrates are also included in the book. The large picture mosaics discovered in the Zeugma houses during the rescue excavations of the 1990s are sensational. They continue the tradition of Hellenistic mosaic floors with pictorial scenes of mythology allegory and marine fantasy and constitute a missing link in the second century AD between picture mosaics of the later Hellenistic period and of Late Antiquity.</p><p>The photography of Ahmet ErtuÄŸ in this beautifully printed book will bring readers into a spectacular and less familiar landscape of the ancient world one that felt itself already in Antiquity to be perched at the bridgehead between West and East.</p><p>The photographs in the book were printed with special inks and all colour-separation and proofing was done at the digital darkroom of Ahmet ErtuÄŸ.
