Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment
Santa Fe: Museum of New Mexico Press 2011. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover in a bright unclipped dust jacket 188 pages color and b&w photos. Since its invention photography has been used to document and interpret the landscape. Survey photographers in the 1860s were the first environmental advocates arguing for the U.S. national park system. Shifting from the historical framework the book presents new work by twenty-three photographers working in the U.S. the next wave of artists using the camera to engage the environmental issues of the day. MIGRANT CHILDREN IN CALIFORNIA
A black-and-white photograph of the barefoot children of migrant workers in California in the 1960s reminiscent of the Depression-era photographs of Dorthea Lange and Walker Evans. This 7" x 9" image was taken by Bob Shumway 1930-2012 a staff photographer for the Long Beach Independent Press Telegraph from 1956 to 1977. According to an Associated Press caption pasted to the verso of the photo it was part of a photo essay titled "Children of the Sun" which cast a spotlight on the children of migrant farm workers who follow their nomadic parents from place to place. "Their homes are the autos or trucks they travel in or for the more fortunate a tent. One father said about one of his recent jobs 'I had to pick five trees to get one box of lemons. They were paying 18 cents a box. I picked nine boxes in eight hours. How do you feed a family on that kind of money' unknown

Each is reproduced with Saroyan's commentary and meditation on the image on the facing page. Saroyan writes in his introduction: "Putting words to pictures may seem a funny business but that is precisely what man has done from the beginning--that is how he made everything he did in fact make and how he came to find measure and try to understand everything else. New pictures impel new words new variations of words. One picture is worth a thousand words. Yes but only if you look at the picture and say or think the thousand words."
