Contents are crisp bright and unmarked; half-leather with five raised bands; all marble edges and marbled endpapers; tight and square text block but paper has cracked quite cleanly along the front hinge leaving the front board loose; leather along spine intact but for 1" split from top front edge; some scuffing to leather; contents are remarkably well-preserved. 30 photographs by Notman on thick paper still crisp and bright. ; Vol. 2; 350 pages; The Dictionary of Canadian Biography says of William Notman: characterized by simplicity and economy tending to starkness in some cases and even to abstraction in others. Notman had the ability to extract the essence of his subject through his choice of viewpoint light and line and he was able simultaneously to describe it accurately and to provoke in the viewer an emotional response to it. As a portraitist Notman because of his attraction to the monumentality of form and his mastery of line light and composition imbued his most prominent subjects with heroic � not to say mythic � qualities in tune with the nationalistic fervour that embraced the new country of Canada. Mostly these are candid photographs of the life of young aspirants to the Catholic priesthood; the first section identified only as Providence June 1939 and as a school commencement preparation graduation ceremonies & faculty and family interactions for 8 male graduates of an institution of higher learning perhaps a pre-seminary training. The rest of the album is identified as 'Life Begins Anew' August 1939 St. Rose's Priory Kentucky with photos of the gradual process of ordination in 1940 for a group of young men following the religious path of the Benedictine order. The photographs are mostly corner-mounted some glued into a 10 1/4" x 13 1/4" hardcover album with black paper pages side-string tied; decoratively blind- stamped brown oblong format covers. Some of the images have become unmoored from their mounting pages and are loosely laid-in. European Origin: No Publisher Noted 1929. Containing approximately 90 black and white photographic images of varying sizes; from 1 1/4" square to 3 �" x 5 �" postcard size; most of them average about 2 �" x 3 �." Mostly these are candid photographs of the life of young boys and men in Austria and Germany with internal dating on some of the photographs of 1929 to 1935 and additional place and dating information on some. There are photos of children mostly young boys at class and later as young men on class trips hiking cycling; with adult chaperones; for the older boys the educational duties appear to be supervised by Christian religious male instructors only. Also containing a few group photographs of men students priests; and some church interior views. Some of the images have the photography studio rubber stamps on the reverse of the state pharmacy in Rottweil. Five of the images are commercial images of architectural landmarks in Vienna. The photographs are corner-mounted not glued into two hardcover albums with black paper pages side-string tied. One album measures 6" x 8 �" and the other 7 �" x 10 �" approx. size; both albums with art-deco themed cloth covers.
