This independent photography school taught limited-enrolment classes by its co-founders Tomatsu Shomei Moriyama Daido Araki Nobuyushi Hosoe Eikoh Fukase Masahisa and Yokosuka Noriaki. Each photographer taught a workshop for a period of one year with a strong emphasis on one-to-one teacher-student relationships. During the first year Nakahira Takuma and Narahara Ikko also taught two additional two-month courses. The journal actively explored new trends in photography through essays and criticism by members of the group and others. Issue 4 was edited by Araki and was based on the simple theme of 'making photography' for this issue he contributed an essay on how to shoot good portraits. Issue 6 was the most controversial issue published in January 1976 which announced 'We Will Sell Photographs: An Exhibition of Photographs Selected by Twelve Photographers' which was issued to accompany an exhibition in February 1976 as an attempt to present photographs as commodities. At that time in Japan as elsewhere sales of photographs as works of art were virtually non-existent and there was some resistance to the idea most notably from Norio Asaki in Asahi Camera.

The Workshop Photography School lasted from April 1974 until March 1976 but one last journal issue was issued in July 1976. This eighth issue featured 'A Roundtable Discussion with Names Withdrawn: Bashing Photography Magazines' in which the Workshop teachers set about challenging the conventional views of photography put forward by Asahi Camera and other photography magazines as well as criticising popular photographers including Kitai Kazuo and Shinoyama Kishin.

The school continued briefly as Araki's Private Photo School until 1977 when Araki offered another one-year workshop. The Workshop Photography School paved the way for several independent galleries and organisations that followed such as Image Shop Camp Photo Gallery Prism and Photo Gallery Put.
For a New World to Come 354-358. [SOVIET UNION] [PHOTOGRAPHY] RODCHENKO, Alexandr
Moscow
Moscow and Leningrad: State Art Publishers 1939. No Edition Stated. Quarto. 26cm. Publisher's ribbed maroon leatherette with the title embossed in gilt to the front board gilt decoration to spine. Approx 250pp.Some wear and rubbing to the extremities most noticeable at the spine ends strong robust and handsome internally clean a very good smart looking copy. Complete with the two tipped in fold-out panoramas of historical renderings of Moscow intended to allow readers to compare the vibrant new Moscow to the less streamlined and progressive city of the past.

With photography by Rodchenko during a period when he was more concerned with painting and text by his wife Vavara Stepanova this volume of stridently energetic images of Moscow Muscovites and the general beauty and order of the urban jewel of the Soviet Union was created for the New York World's Fair of 1939. This use of Rodchenko's photography occured during a time when criticism of his work as being 'too aesthetic' and not adequately serving the cause of Socialist Realism was causing him some professional and political problems. His desire "to search inquisitively for new riches in the language of photography" frequently put him in a position where the taking of a photograph that fulfilled his artistic requirements placed him at odds with the artistic requirements of the Soviet artistic monolith or at least the monolith it aspired to represent.
No expense seems to have been spared for this volume and no publicity trope of Soviet Reality tm seems to have been overlooked; from clean streets and punctual public transport to racks of healthy babies in a Moscow maternity ward and laughing children behind the scenes at the State Theatre. Access is given to the production lines of the mighty factories of the Soviet industrial behemoth with special emphasis on the way in which the workers of the USSR are encouraged to streamline and develop their own working methods and procedures with the aim of constantly striving to increase productivity and labor output. Workers are smiling proud and uniformly enthusiastic schoolchildren are clean and respectful and avidly consuming Pushkin at age 7 and the rest of the world looks grubby cluttered and chaotic in comparison which was presumably the idea. Impressive somewhat awe inspiring and from a 21st century perspective rather grim considering the carnage and chaos that was about to overwhelm the world. Fairly well represented in institutions with some visible gaps clean tidy copies can be elusive. KARASIK: The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941. Pages 464-465. State Art Publishers unknown

(NEVADA: PHOTOGRAPHY)
Cabinet Self-Portrait Advertisement Card for Early California and Nevada Photographer William H. Pilliner.
Reno Nev.: W. H. Pilliner Pioneer Artist ca. 1875. Original albumen self-portrait measuring 3 5 /8 x 5 3/8 on original light yellow mount measuring 4 1/8 x 6 1/2 inches. Printed in a gothic-like font beneath the image "W.H. Pilliner Pioneer Artist Reno Nev." A good and sharp image of this stylish photographer."William H. Pilliner 1826-1902 was born in the Dutch East Indies. He went to San Francisco as a youth eventually learned photography and in 1858 had his first gallery in Red Bluff California. In 1863 he married Eliza Jane McGuire born about 1843 who came to California from Missouri in 1850. For the next several decades they and their children lived intermittently in California Nevada Montana and Idaho where Pilliner operated various photography studios. His son Frederick John Pilliner also became a photographer and father and son operated a gallery together for a brief time in Silver City Idaho in 1891" Online Archive of California. We know from newspaper reports that Pilliner was in the Reno area in 1875. Prior to that he had a studio in Grass Valley from 1870-1875 and after Reno we find record of him being in Virginia City in 1882. He must have wandered quite a bit as in 1876 just one year later there is an ad for his Chromo Photo services in Elko Nev.The carte de visite was displaced by the larger cabinet card in the later half of the 1860s. Both were most often albumen prints the primary difference being the cabinet card was larger and usually included extensive logos and information on the reverse side of the card to advertise the photographer's services. But in this case there is no back printing as what he was advertising was right there on the front: himself and his services as a Pioneer Artist. W. H. Pilliner, Pioneer Artist unknown

[ANTI-LABOR] [PHOTOGRAPHY] [STRIKES & STRIKEBREAKING]
40 Injured in Riot at Republic Steel" Three International News Photo Images of 1937 Cleveland Steel Strike Violence
1937. 21.5cm x 16.5cm. Three black and white original photos with "International News Photos" stamps to versos with accompanying typewritten slug. Light scratching of the laminate to one image and some very minor soiling to white borders very good clean clear photographs.

Three images from the violent clashes between Congress of Industrial Organizations union men striking for better working conditions at the "Little Steel" mills in Cleveland and the carloads of scab workers driven in by the management to break the strike. The violence accelerated to such a level as these images testify that the Governor of Ohio Martin Davey felt the need to bring in the National Guard.
The content of the images at least as perceived by the press at the time is detailed on the captioned slug:

#1 A non-striking Republic Worker being beaten by strikers at the Corrigan Plant.
#2 Strikers breaking windows in machines carrying carrying non strikers out og the Corrigan-McKinney Plant.
#3 This young striker was badly wounded by loyal or non striking workers. Note his stained handkerchief.

Although the details are impossible to accurately ascertain from the images designations like "strikers" "loyal non strikers" and the assertion that workers were leaving the plant when attacked are created purely at the whim of the press guy who typed up the slug for decent copy they are most certainly indicative of the extreme violence of the confrontation.
Image #1 depicts a bleeding man with what look to be welding goggles around his neck struggling on the ground being beaten by 4 others one of whom is wielding a two by four; #2 has a group of clearly enraged men armed with lead pipes destroying the windshield of a car that is clearly occupied; #3 the final image of the triptych shows a young man in a dark suit bleeding heavily from the face and being escorted away by a clearly concerned comrade.

The actual facts of the violent clashes of the night of the 26th of July 1937 hinge around the fact that Republic Steel facing months of lost revenue at Corrigan-McKinney and their other plants built a small private army of "paramilitaries" undeterred from the backlash of the previous month's "Women's Day Massacre" where Cleveland cops had fired live ammunition into a group of strikers killing one and injuring several others. The rented strikebreakers armed with weapons manufactured using the mill equipment stormed out of the factory buildings and laid into the strikers with no regard for life or limb. Eighty strikers were seriously injured once the police arrived upwards of a dozen known union men were arrested and the man in charge of city security in Cleveland the fabled Elliot Ness issued a series of empty ultimatums to the "agitators" that if they didn't lead to the abandonment of his political ambitions certainly contributed to his disillusionment. In a climate where people were becoming increasingly aware that their political leaders could all be bought and paid for the brutal stamping the union men took starting looking more like abuse of power than quelling a riot. These images are certainly indicative of the brutality and violence but how and with what purpose they would be presented to their audience is really the question. unknown

(PHOTOGRAPHY: WHIRLING DERVISH)
CDV of Missionary William Redfield Stocking Jr. Attired in the Garb of a Whirling Dervish.
Lowell: N. C. Sanborn ca. 1875. This cdv albumen portrait of William Redfield Stocking Jr. measures 4 1/8 x 2 1/2 inches and has the photographer's imprint on the verso of the mount. Ever so slightly faded but a very good image nonetheless.William Redfield Stocking Jr. the son of Protestant missionary William Redfield Stocking was born in 1844 in the Western Azerbaijan city of Urumiah then still part of the Persian Empire. Due to his father's poor health the family returned to the United States in 1853. Soon after their return Stocking Sr. died. He turned 18 in 1862 and promptly enlisted in the 34th Massachusetts Infantry. He serve admirably in the War and rose to the rank of sergeant. After the war he attended the Williston Seminary and graduated from Williams College in 1869. In 1871 he was married and five days later was ordained. The young couple went through Europe and on to Persia. Stocking having grown up there was likely fluent in the language. His wife died in Turkey in 1872. In 1873 he remarried and the newly weds remained in Persia and Turkey for several years doing missionary work. This cdv was likely taken on a trip home in the mid-1870s. Stocking was well versed in the religion and customs of Iran and it appears that he was so taken up with Sufism that he either bought or was given the sacred clothing of that order of Islamic mystics; the tall conical hat and long robe are characteristic of the whirling dervish attire Mevlevi Sufi order of the time. . [PHOTOGRAPHY] [INDUSTRIAL HISTORY - ELECTRIFICATION - NEBRASKA] TALBOT, Gardner W (photographer)
Album of 25 Original Photographs Documenting Construction of the Central Power Station Omaha 1910-1912
Omaha: c.1912. Photograph album 9" x 13"; tape-backed marbled boards containing 25 original mounted silver-gelatin prints each 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" printed without borders mounted on linen album leaves; ink captions provide dates and sometimes brief descriptions. Four of the images signed "Talbot" lower right; four more back-stamped with studio stamp of "Gardner W. Talbot Omaha Neb" remainder unsigned but all captioned in the same hand and presumably all by the same photographer. A well-preserved album: covers loose with modern tape repairs but apparently complete; the images generally Very Good or better with minimal fading; occasional mild oxidation to image surfaces but no notable wear or soil. Six additional photographs laid-in as found now housed in an archival mylar sleeve.

An attractive collection of professional large-format industrial images documenting the expansion of Omaha's Central Power Station between 1910 and 1912. The photographs are especially interesting for providing detailed and personal representations of workers and working conditions within the context of a project of truly massive scale. The images throughout are well-composed and clearly professionally-produced though we have been able to discover no other photographic work by this photographer. Talbot is not mentioned in Mautz Biographies of Western Photographers; the 1910 U.S. Census records him as a resident of Omaha with his occupation listed as "stenographer" with a "railroad office." We would deduce that he was an employee of the Omaha & Council Bluffs Railway charged with documenting the project from start to finish probably for the company's internal records.

Omaha's Central Power Station situated at the eastern terminus of Leavenworth Street on the banks of the Missouri River was originally constructed in 1904 in order to power the city's new electric rail system under the management of of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Street Railway. By 1910 the rail system like Omaha itself had grown exponentially necessitating the significant increase in capacity which prompted the upgrades to the plant documented here. According to contemporary newspaper accounts the project cost about $600000 and provided an additional 15000kw of power. The structure remains mostly intact to this day; it is on the National Register of Historic Places and was recently converted 2017 to a luxury apartment complex "The Breakers. unknown

Thomas Ellis had a lifelong connection with Wales - her mother was half Welsh and as a child during World War II she spent time as an evacuee in North Wales a place to which she would always return. Many of Thomas Ellis' novels are set in Wales such as 'Fairy Tale' 1996 and 'Unexplained Laughter' 1985 and despite living in London she maintained a holiday home in Powys where she lived permanently after her husband's death in 1995. 'A Welsh Childhood' describes Thomas Ellis' experiences in Wales as both a child and an adult the early impact of Welsh folklore on her imagination her love of the Welsh landscape and her grief as it changes with time. These recollections are set against the backdrop of Thomas Ellis' own personal and professional life including her painful struggle with the death of her nineteen-year-old son and her profound and complex relationship with the Catholic faith. Supported by fantastic intimate images of Wales and Welsh people by the documentary photographer Patrick Sutherland. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. [Disasters] [Vernacular photography]
Archive of original photographs of the Second Great Flood of Johnstown Pennsylvania 1977
N.p.: N.p. 1977. Archive of 68 vernacular photographs documenting a catastrophic flood in Johnstown Pennsylvania on July 19-20 1977 known colloquially as the "Second Great Flood of Johnstown."

Annotations in manuscript ink note the name and address of the album's owner a Madaline Hasse as well as the date July 20 1977 and the names of several locations captured in the album-Dale Walnut Grove Solomans Home and Ohio Street. Featured are numerous striking views of water rushing through city streets downed trees and branches accumulated mud and debris and the city's residents presumably driven from their houses witnessing the aftermath.

In the wake of damage sustained during floods in 1889 and 1936 the US Army Corps of Engineers began working on flood control measures in 1938 and by 1943 the project was declared complete. The channel improvements made during the project were designed to carry 81500 cubic feet per second of water. On the night of July 19 1977 however a deluge of rainfall created a flood discharge of 115000 cubic feet per second causing six dams in Cambria County to fail.

Eight counties were affected by the flooding resulting in 2700 injuries and 76 deaths. The local economy was also heavily impacted by the flood largely due to the area's biggest employer Bethlehem Steel terminating over 2300 jobs in the years following the disaster. The decline in steel and coal production made a significant dent in city revenue and Johnstown ultimately never recovered its industrial power.

Photographs approximately 3.5 x 4.5 inches housed in a generic white vinyl spiralbound album measuring 10 x 12 inches. Photographs generally Very Good plus to Near Fine moderately faded held to album pages with plastic overlays. N.p. unknown
