Contemporary prints each measuring approximately 6" x 4" from the original film negatives on Kodak paper. Mild curling to edges of most prints from storage near album spine. Otherwise well preserved near fine.

Graphic collection of performance photographs from the self-proclaimed "world's sexiest band" The Genitorturers. Fifty color snapshot photographs capturing an October 21 1999 performance of the industrial metal band at The Fenix nightclub in Seattle. The band emerged in the early 1990's Florida hardcore scene alongside acts like Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids and became known for its extreme sexual exhibitionism during performances which included nudity genital torture live simulated sex acts and BDSM. These photographs were captured from a prime vantage point apparently in front of the crowd and hold very little back. In a 2014 interview with the Phoenix Times founding member Gen commented on the band's evolution in the digital age: "We definitely brought that underground to the stage. This was before the Internet and before you could access all these different types of fashions and sexuality and fetishes. . people could come to our shows and be a part of like-minded people. In that regard it changed. When you have pretty crazy shows like we do there weren't cell phones where you could take pictures. It was more extreme in those days. It was a very different world. . That's something we've had to deal with and I think our show is becoming a little less sexually oriented and more theatrical oriented." A substantial uncensored archive of a single Genitorturers show in an era prior to ubiquitous cell phone video recording of club performances. hardcover books

Moderate to heavy scuffing at corners; some foxing. 3 Thirteen 3.25 x 7/25 prints. 4 Eleven 5'' x 7'' prints. Also included: Assorted branded ephemera approximately 40 items including: company correspondence safety & sanitation posters brochures stickers three leaflets placards calendars packaging mailing envelopes inter-office memo pad petty cash slips billing and order forms. Very good plus overall with individual exceptions as noted above.

Vibrant archive of marketing presentation mailing advertising and sales materials for a wide assortment of primarily candy and other confections from McCormick's Limited and affiliated bakeries - consisting mainly of a colorful collection of 175 original photographs of various McCormick products.

The company was established in the 19th century as the McCormick Biscuit and Candy Company and by the years represented in this collection was owned by George Weston Limited producer of Wonder Bread for the Canadian market. Concerned with promotion and publicity from its early years McCormick's was a provider of biscuits to the Dionne Quintuplets a recipient of their youthful endorsements and a donor of sizable royalties to their trust fund. In an included four-page spread from September 1967's THE MERCHANDISER the company proudly notes this connection while advertising its own advertising prowess through the decades: "The brochures are attractive and mouth-watering."

Included brochures verify this claim; pictured products range from familiar vintage confections like cherry cordials and Walnut Shorties "WALNUTS make the difference"! to discontinued exotica like Ceylon Mallows Pie Face &" Fat Emma" candy bars a Minneapolis invention of the 1920s all but disappeared by the 1970s now extinct; Golden Humbugs Canada Lozenges and Sea Kings/Roi de la Mer. McCormick also produced accessories edible and otherwise through the Imperial Cone Company represented here by an illustrated leaflet with photos and dimensions of Torch Cones Buddy Waffles Sweetheart Straws etc.

The small selection of dated items range from 1953 to 1982 though most materials are undated; the majority of the archive consists of product photographs in vibrant glowing color for use in promotional materials catalogs and store displays. Most of these prints date from the 1960s through the early 1970s with several showcasing 1967 Canadian Centennial packaging. Shut down in the 2000s the abandoned McCormick factory has become a tantalizing attraction to urban explorers.

Though a Canadian company there is something of the quintessentially mythic innocent post-war American childhood captured in these indelible primary-color images. Simultaneously a engaging record of this important culinary company and an undeniably nostalgic document. [McCormick's Limited] unknown books

Motorcycling: Photography
Photograph Archive of an Early-1940's West Coast Motorcycle Club
Oregon ca. 1941. 117 black and white photographs including 4 medium enlargements and 1 narrow photo scrap the remaining 112 snapshot format. Mounted in an apparently later album to rectos and versos of 9 adhesive card leaves. At least 7 prints appear trimmed to fit into current album mounting. Most firmly adhered to pages. Generally prints about very good.

A scarce and revealing collection of more than 100 views of pre-World War II West Coast motorcycle club culture with a clear outsider sense of identity predating the post-war non-conformity associated with the accepted dawn of modern biker culture by more than a decade. "St. Helen's Motorcycle Club" can be gleaned in raised felt letters to the rear of member's sweaters from 2 separate photographs. License plate and vehicle model views clearly indicate 1941 and print quality to some images suggests slightly earlier as well.

Dozens of views capture leather clad riders atop early-1940's Harley-Davidson and Indian models in apparently ad-hoc flat-track racing hill climbs and group rides; a particularly compelling series of 4 prints chronicles what appears to be a rider crashing through a flaming wall of wood. Several prints of imposing rows of bikes parked along city streets and a single print of riders blocking a Downtown Portland street while riding in a circle in front of onlookers coupled with images of leather-clad members making out and drinking suggest the St. Helen's club reveled in its outsider status. The prevalence of "outlaw" motorcycle clubs rose to prominence after World War II with the infamous Hollister riot of 1947 and the Lee Marvin Marlon Brando film THE WILD ONES 1953 based on events there widely credited with the birthing of rock-and-roll style and 20th century youth culture. Therefore an early primary document from the birth of rock-and-roll style and 20th century youth culture. hardcover books

Chicago: Photography
1900s Family Photo Album of Gilded Age Chicago
Chicago ca. 1900. Hardcover. 4to. Maroon cloth gilt-stamped boards scuffed and frayed at corners and spine ends. Binding a bit shaken but secure. Multiple photographs per page mounted recto and verso throughout with additional photos and ephemera laid in. Some rippling and small tears to photos/pages. About very good minus.

A copy of "Integral" the Illinois Institute of Technology yearbook for 1900 repurposed as a photo album and memorializing the domestic life of a close family group. Other scenes include a mixed-sex bathing party at the shore in the heavy Edwardian-styled swimming costumes of the day; two young men frolicking and lounging around a gazebo in the manner of an Edward Gorey illustration; two young women both dressed in men's heavy overalls and roughhousing or acting out a tableau; and portraits of new parents with their infant. A few mystifying poses most likely preserve some long-lost jokes while others capture many moments of physical affection in an era not known for easy emotional display in photographs.

Laid in are several newspaper clippings concerning members of the Ridenour family presumably pictured within; the latest dates from the 1920s though the vast majority of photographs all appear to date from the early 1900s with fashions not far ahead of those worn in those photos still visible from the yearbook itself. A small number of photos from ca. the 1910s show young men brandishing sledgehammers part of the "Red Path Chautaqua Crew" for the traveling-circuit tent show.

Note that one photograph towards the end of the album shows two men backs turned to the camera wearing white robes with pointed hoods; one is decorated with the crude logo of a skull and two crossed flags or axes. It is possible that these figures are wearing the costume of new Freemason initiates rather than the KKK robes they resemble the insignia resembles the Oddfellows skull-and-crossbones and the Klan was not universally identified with such costumes until 1915 and after. The identification is thus uncertain but the iconography is nevertheless highly disturbing to a modern eye; and with its placement following page after page of harmonious domestic scenes it serves as a reminder of the violent allegiances of some white Chicagoans in the period leading up to the city's anti-black riots of 1919. hardcover books

Photography: Fetish
Photo Albums of Women Smoking
np: np ca. 1997. Fine. 12mo. Commercial red boards spiral photo album. Containing 100 color photographs of various women smoking loosely inserted in individual sleeves one to a page both recto and verso. Marjority 5.5" x 3.5" with some smaller/trimmed. A handful annotated on versos with what are presumed to be inventory numbers and/or "Do not reproduce" statements. Two with stamp of of noted smoking fetish studio CoherentLight Photography Edmond OK. Nine images with stamp or copyright statement from legendary erotic photographer Eric Kroll. Generally fine condition.

Stylistically unified fetish album featuring women in various provocative poses and states of undress — all smoking. A collection likely assembled by a fellow fetishist sometime in the late nineties the collection features at least three different photographers and studios all clearly specializing in fetish images if not smoking fetish in particular as well as appropriated photos of famous women smoking Drew Barrymore Melanie Griffith Olivia Newton John Jennifer Connolly Kristin Scott Thomas etc. Most prominently at least two photos are from Edward Luisser's CoherentLight which specialized in smoking fetish images with an additional nine photos by the legendary Eric Knoll. Images from the session in this album were included in his book FETISH GIRLS Taschen 1996. We suspect the majority of the remaining images in the album are by one or both of these photographers though the balance lack stamps or identifying annotations. Nevertheless a striking collection of original professional fetish photography. np hardcover books

Fetish: Photography. "Marilyn"
Cross-Dressing Fetish Album
np ca. mid-1980s. Very good . Square folio brown faux-leather contemporary commercial album. Containing 97 color photographs loosely inserted in compartmented plastic sleeves six to a page. Most 3"x 5" some smaller with some Poloroids. A couple of images trimmed a few more creased. Some annotations to versos. Else well-preserved. Easily very good or better overall.

Large collection of almost 100 color photographs of various cross-dressers assembled by "Marilyn" addressed on versos of several photos likely a fellow enthusiast. With only minor repetition of subjects and many photos stamped with names addresses or inscribed on their versos several lengthy this collections appears to be less a portrait of a local community or established circle and more that of a practitioner reaching out through the mail undoubtedly through zines and personal ads. Further to this cataloguer at least these images seem to document primarily neither drag gay nor transgender subjects but instead to be of a more fetishistic bent — though obviously with some overlap. As the caption on one photo reads: "I really love to wear very sexy sheer silly bra panties garter belts sheer stockings high heel slippers & flowing full length sheer negligee. I feel so much like a very sensuous feminine shemale then." A smaller section 24 total of sexually explicit images segregated at the end of the album lends further credence this view. Dated photos converge around the mid-eighties a period when cross-dressing was still poorly accepted. Indeed the height of the AIDS crisis must have contributed to a feeling of even greater isolation with underground communications such as these often providing the only outlet for fellowship. A valuable document from a sexually marginalized community. hardcover books

String-tied faux-alligator boards. 43 gelatin-silver prints majority 3.75" by 2.5" but many 5.5" by 3.25" mounted to stiff gray leaves with cobweb-patterned tissue guards on each and handwritten captions in Dutch. Apparently complete. Near fine with several photos mildly yellowed but majority bright and sharp.

Second album: 13'' by 9'' approx. String-tied grey textured paper boards. 91 gelatin-silver prints of various sizes from 3.75'' by 2.5'' to 5.5'' by 3.25'' most of the latter size on stiff blue paper with tissue guards and handwritten captions in Dutch. Also contains an anti-Hitler card affixed to the front paste-down several cards with art and verse and two sepia-toned photographs on the final page. Two 5'' scuff marks to front board album corners and edges worn and bumped otherwise near fine with bright and sharp photographs.

A pair of carefully assembled albums possibly compiled for official use. The majority of the photos in both albums record the aftermath of a botched Allied bombardment in the Hague on March 3 1945; the attack claimed the lives of 511 civilians and left over 20000 people homeless. Targeted at a German missile base in the occupied Netherlands bombs deployed by the Royal Air Force landed instead in the adjacent Bezuidenhout neighborhood in the Hague destroying thousands of homes business and public buildings. The photos show several bombed-out churches and many apartment buildings with street names captioned underneath. Near the end of the first album three images show the burning of the Schevenigen Pier near the Hague which the compiler blames on the Germans but whose exact cause has never been established. The album forms a direct account of wartime destruction in the Netherlands.

The second album much more extensive includes some of the same material along with many other photographs. Affixed to the front paste-down is a black-bordered satirical memorial card for Hitler reading in Dutch "He came.but not to England / He saw.Moscow / He lost.the war." Beginning with two views of The Hague one in 1930 and one apparently mid-bombardment labeled March 3 1945 it also includes numerous scenes of destroyed buildings and monuments identified by street name. Some of these overlap with images from the first album; many do not. In addition to those showing the aftermath of the bombing several photos show intact monuments and buildings from neighboring cities like Middelburg possibly as a point of comparison with the ones destroyed. A few pages show photographs of various Bailey bridges at unspecified locations and other wartime construction. The final page of uncaptioned photos includes a shot of a pro-Hitler slogan painted in Dutch on a bridge underpass and a photo of several posters including a Dutch advertisement for "De Eeuwige Jood" The Eternal Jew a German propaganda film. A final leaf follows with two pro-R.A.F. cards with verses and drawings and three souvenir cards of Queen Wilhelmina Princess Juliana and her children Beatrix and Irene. The final page has two sepia-toned photos of a parade presumably celebrating the war's end. An important act of witnessing from an unfortunate event. hardcover books

NYC Celebrity Selfie Photo Archive
New York ca. mid-2010s. Fine. Collection of 208 photo prints all 4" by 6". Generally fine. Many include felt-tip notations to verso and a few have been altered with marker to obscure faces in background.

Archive of selfies taken by one man next to celebrities on the street in New York during the mid 2010s judging by the handful of captions most dated 2014 presumably on disposable cameras. The photographer was clearly quite committed to this hobby finding celebrities at public events or simply walking on the street; he uniformly smiles in the photos and in many gives a thumbs up. Displaying varying degrees of enthusiasm the subjects appear mostly to be sports and/or wrestling figures but actors and other media personalities are common. This cataloger was able to identify Method Man Snoop Dogg Nick Cannon Steve Harvey Robert Duvall Kiefer Sutherland Ryan Seacrest Kevin Hart Jason Alexander Snooki Laverne Cox Uzo Aduba Jim Carrey Matthew Broderick x2 Jason Bateman Artie Lange Kevin Bacon Cedric the Entertainer Jessica Simpson Seth Rogen Lorne Michaels Ozzy Osbourne Keith Olbermann Cal Ripken Jr. Paula Abdul Amy Schumer Vince McMahon and Mr. T. It has been said the selfie is of late replacing the autograph as the favored celebrity token; this collection certainly supports that observation. unknown books

Photography: Native Americana. RITTER E. Carl Photographer?
HOT LUNCH AT ALL HOURS Original Photograph
Akron OH ca. 1905. Near fine. Original vintage gelatin silver photograph 8.25" x 5.125" approx. on contemporary mount 9" x 6". Mild wear. Some silvering to image. Near fine overall. Titled and numbered in the negative.

A skilled and moving portrait of a Native American family probably Mojave with an unfortunately common and typically racist title along the top edge. Captured in-studio the image shows a husband and wife with their infant child. The father stands his wife seated beside and nursing the baby. Variations on this subject and title native and black women with nursing child were not uncommon at this time. But whereas most examples usually featured an intentionally unflattering image this photo – considered without its offensive sentiment — offers a frank objective and almost tender appraisal of its subject not unlike the photographs Edward Curtis was taking during this period. Though numbered in the negative the image is unsigned and uncredited. However a brief review in a 1903 issue of The St. Louis and Canadian Photographer mentions a photograph apparently matching this image credited to one E. Carl Ritter of Akron though we've been unable to confirm or find any further information on Ritter. Nevertheless a striking portrait of a turn-of-the-century Native American family in period attire with title reflecting period attitudes. unknown books

India: Bengal and North Western Railway Company 193-. Very good . Small 4to. album. Stamped leather label affixed to front board. Very good plus to near fine. 14 leaves each with photographs and typewritten sheets mounted on rectos and versos. Contains 68 mounted photographs 21 of which are cyanotypes with handwritten captions underneath; also includes one blueprint map mounted on inside rear cover. Complete. Pages show light rippling here and there; several show mild edgewear. Else clean and sharp.

An English-language photographic record of the damages wreaked on India's Bengal and North Western Railway by the Nepal-Bihar earthquake of 1934 which remains one of the worst earthquakes in Indian history. As the album's introductory text puts it "of the 2100 miles comprising the Bengal and North Western and Tirhur Railways it may be said that on the 900 miles traversing North Behar and the eastern United Provinces hardly a mile of track was undisturbed." Not limited to photos of the track itself the images show crumbling railroad stations engine sheds dwellings bungalows and factories adjacent to the railroad all in various degrees of ruin. The album appears to have been produced for the Railway's own archives and does not appear in OCLC. As the captions are handwritten this album is more than likely the only example. An important record of this deadly disaster which Gandhi famously interpreted as divine retribution for India's failure to abolish the untouchable dalit caste. Photography: Americana: High School. TUCKER Robert H.
Midcentury Photo Album of a High Schooler in Upstate New York
Poughkeepsie 1948-1951. Very good . Oblong 16mo. Commercial string-tied album white boards. 225 gelatin-silver prints 2.5" by 3.25" corner-mounted on black paper with captions in white ink. Apparently complete. Very good plus. Mild touches of wear along page edges; many captions a bit smudged; else clean and sound.

A evocative collection of photographs taken and compiled by Robert H. Tucker while he was a student at MIT of his high school career at Poughkeepsie's Arlington High School where he graduated with the class of 1950. Tucker called this album his "own yearbook" and it indeed shares a great deal with conventional yearbook style with humorous captions "A test Oh no!" and attention to a wide range of faculty staff and student activities both in and out of the classroom. Subjects include track meets baseball games cheerleaders teachers at the blackboard students at work in the library a special event including donkey-riding in the gym commencement and other activities. More than mere yearbook however the album reveals Tucker to be a natural photographer with an eye for both composition and POV; his sports shots are especially vibrant often crisply capturing athletes in the midst of the action. A detailed album capturing the dawn of the post-war American teenager. Indeed quintessentially so; we are tempted to call this an almost Platonically ideal example of the high school album. hardcover books

Snapshots of a McDonald's Location Grand Opening
Lebanon Oregon: ca.1980. 43 color snapshot photographs. Drugstore prints. Approximately 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" or slightly larger. Prints about near fine.

A glorious assembly of snapshots capturing the grand opening of a McDonalds' franchise location in the 2300 block of S. Main St. in Lebanon Oregon a small city approximately 80 miles south of Portland. Images include interiors with signage exterior architectural details opening crowds and like. The vehicles shown and presence of signage advertising the franchise's "$6000000 Winning Combination" promotion seem to firmly place these in 1980 though a firm date for the location's opening has eluded us in typical research. While likely captured with a simple point-and-shoot camera for basic documentation the styings of the era overwhelm any would-be banality and taken together the images capture an endearlingly nostalgic bit of Americana. Further several shots seemingly taken from the roof of the building suggest these may have been taken by or for the franchise owner. The photographs also document a number of strategies crucial to the explosvie era of growth McDonald's experienced in the 1970's and 1980's: placing locations exclusively in the suburbs actively marketing to children Ronald McDonald features prominently in several pictures staging elaborate grand openings etc. I'm loving it. These images document the president's participation in the Veterans Day ceremony including laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and speaking to a crowd of more than 5000 at the Memorial Amphitheater. This speech perhaps a justification for the United States' increasing involvement in Vietnam was a message of peace through war: “In the end the only way to maintain the peace is to be prepared in the final extreme to fight for our country — and to mean it. As a nation we have little capacity for deception. We can convince friend and foe alike that we are in earnest about the defense of freedom only if we are in earnest -— and I can assure the world that we are.” unknown books
