Archive of photographs and letters regarding a pair of African American twin child actors
Los Angeles: N.p. 1935. Archive of material regarding a pair of prospective African American child actors including four black and white photographs of the children four autograph letters signed from a "Madame Fay" variously addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Smith and an unnamed "Mr. Agent" and one typescript letter unsigned but seemingly from one of the Smiths responding to Fay's previous correspondence. Two photographs with the stamp of Adair's Studio at 4105 Central Avenue on the verso. <br /> <br /> Fay's letters which identify the children as twins broadly discuss her hopes of securing acting representation for the twins facilitated by the Smiths who seem to have had some connections within the film industry. The letters also frankly address Fay's financial hardships noting "I don't expect much for myself in the start buy if I only know that I have a Dependance I will feel safer. I don't think I shall ever be able to go into any ones kitchen and the lisence is so high for readings that unless I can't find any other sorce of Deasent living I hardly know what to do" sic all. Fay's note about licenses for readings as well as her distinctive moniker suggests that she also worked as a medium or psychic in addition to having previously worked for the Smiths.<br /> <br /> In her single letter to the unnamed agent Fay reiterates her desperation and states that she previously took the children to noted film and television comedy producer Hal Roach. She goes on to state her preference for the children working with a white agent and avoiding "the Central ave. agents". Central Avenue and 41st Street was the heart of African American life in Los Angeles in the early and mid-20th century a populous region commonly referred to as the "Black belt of the city" home to a rapidly growing African American community as well as numerous Black-owned enterprises. <br /> <br /> As a whole the archive presents an interesting and emotive glimpse into life on the edges of Depression-era Hollywood as well as the numerous difficulties and limitations faced by African Americans in gaining entry into the film industry.<br /> <br /> Photographs approximately 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Original Salesperson Album for A.F.C. Bateman Furniture of Philadelphia.
Philadelphia: A.F.C. Bateman Company ca. 1910. Original furniture salesperson catalog with 52 original photographs of offered products as well as many half-tones to fill it out. Period string-tied black cloth album 11 x 7 inches with printed paper cover label. Edge chipping to some pages and label on front with a piece missing. A few leaves at the fron have come loose but are still snug. Overall a very interesting album and it appears that no photographs have fallen out.Even though the A.F.C. Bateman Company is hard to track down one gets the idea that they were quite influential in their day as many current furniture companies still offer such things as a "Bateman Chair" etc. This particular catalog is focused entirely upon chairs. The label on front reads "Antiques and Reproductions" and judging from the photographs these are all reproductions of antique chairs. Many of the photographs have manuscript numbers or names. Many of the half-tones are of real antique American chairs and presumably the company would point them out and offer to have them made as well. A.F.C. Bateman Company hardcover

A Fine Album Documenting the Career of a Pattern Maker at Hans Renold Ltd.
Manchester: N.p. 1907-1941. This album documents the career of John Cecil Smith a licensed patter maker at the Manchester firms of Hans Renold Ltd. it contains 33 original photographs most 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches but some differ corner-mounted on thick leaves which are all bound on stubs. It also contains other memorabilia of Smith's time with the company. Quarto 7 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches half black roan over gilt-ruled green cloth. Spine is absent but the album remains firm and the photographs are very bright indeed.Swift joined Renold's as an apprentice in 1907 and following a career path that is almost unheard of today went on to spend his entire working life with same company: an apparent testament to the success of the enlightened management techniques instituted by the firm's founder. Bound and laid in are Swift's 2 pp. apprenticeship agreement printed and manuscript dated 18 September 1907; as well as his apprenticeship agreement printed and manuscript dated 18 September 1907. The photographs are of the items produced by this forward-thinking firm. Of special interest are the nine photographs highlighting thier stand at a 1930s trade exhibition Renold and Coventry Timing Chains. Pesumable John Smith manned the booth.“Hans Renold 1852-1943 was a Swiss/British engineer inventor and industrialist in Britain who founded the Renold manufacturing textile-chain making business in 1879 and with Alexander Hamilton Church is credited for introducing scientific management also known as Taylorism to England….Soon after starting the business in 1879 in 1880 Hans Renold invented the bush roller chain. This represented a great advance on the common pin-and-link chains of the day and laid the design foundation upon which all modern precision roller chains are based. The firm immediately extended its business from textile chains into cycle chains for the new safety bicycle invented by J. K. Starley. Renold was not only a brilliant engineer and a model employer who built around him a very skilled labour force but was also a very astute businessman. His business prospered and he steadily ploughed back his growing profits into the premises and plant. He moved the business to Brook Street Manchester in 1881. In 1889 a rapid expansion of the business took place and a new factory Progress Works was built in Brook Street. In 1906 Hans Renold planned and started construction of Renold Works on open land at Burnage five miles to the south of Manchester. Renold had long been devoted to the ideal of establishing a firm sense of community among his employees and their families and in 1909 gave his active support to the establishment of the Hans Renold Social Union for the encouragement of a wide range of leisure activities.Hans Renold Limited was formed as a private limited company in 1903. It merged with The Coventry Chain Company Limited and was registered as a public limited company named Renold and Coventry Chain Company Limited in 1930. Annotations on verso noting "Van Morrison 'Cover' 1884" in manuscript marker with the "1884" being the album catalogue number and "the band street choir" just below in manuscript pencil.<br /> <br /> Gahr was a preeminent photographer of folk blues jazz and rock musicians for over four decades whose subjects include the likes of Bob Dylan John Lennon Miles Davis Bruce Springsteen Janis Joplin Peter Seeger and many many others. Manuscript ink annotation to the inside front cover provides the date and album title: "Dress-Up-Day Pictures / April 5 1940". <br /> <br /> Many photographs with manuscript ink annotation captions to the bottom edges identifying the subjects. <br /> <br /> The outfits run the gamut: while some teens opted for simple cross-dressing costumes many were more creative dressing as cowboys hula girls hoboes married couples and the like. A Group of 58 Female Boxing and Wrestling Photographs Attributed to Bernard Kobel.

This group including posed and candid shots of scantily clad women boxing in the ring with an audience and sometimes a coach or en plein air; also with a series that appears to show mud-wrestling approximately 17. Silver and silver copy prints the images measuring 6 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches 15.9 x 11.4 cm. and slightly smaller and the reverse the sheets 7 x 5 inches 17.8 x 12.7 cm. two measuring 4 1/4x 3 1/2 inches 10 x 8.9 cm. the sheets slightly larger many with letter or numeric hand stamps and/or notations in pencil and four with the subjects identified in ink on verso. Someone has outlined many of the fighters a bit hard to notice unless under a bright light. An interesting assembly of photographs of women fighters likely viewed as distasteful at the time. "Bernard Lyle Kobel lived a very full life during in his 79 years. He was a Lone Scout photographer photojournalist writer stamp collector cartoonist poet World War II Army veteran and more. Two Original Press Photographs of the Amundsen Party in the Arctic Circle.
Pacific & Atlantic Photos inc 1922. Two original silver gelatin press photographs. Each measures 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Each also bears a large copyright notice ink-stamped on the verso and a tipped-in slip advising newspapers of possible headline or story angles. One with a corner chip and a slight developing flaw on the upper corner not affecting any part of the image. The other with a small marginal chip. Very good copies of these unusual images.The Pacific and Atlantic Photos office gave no photographer credit. Both of the tipped-in slips open with the following statement - "These are the first and exclusive photos to reach the outside world and his hardy associates since they entered the frozen arctic wastes." One photograph shows the Eskimos who helped load the Maud Amundsen's ship. being taken aboard the ship 'C. S. Holmes." The other photographs shows Dr. H. V. Sverdrup famous Norwegian scientist on board the Maud lodged fast in the ice. They are both dated 10/18/22. Pacific & Atlantic Photos, inc unknown

Original Photographs of Motorcycle Daredevil And Racer Gary Wells.
V.p.: N.P. 1970-900. Original album with twenty-four photographs of Gary Wells at various racing or jumping events. Each measure 10 x 8 inches. They are laid in one to a page in an older style album with sticky backing. We pulled one off to check for any information but the only thing found that were handwritten dates. Seems highly likely that this was his personal album as the first pictures shows on a motorcycle at about age 13 out in the California desert and the last picture shows him popping a wheelie and wearing his daredevil outfit likely for the disastrous jump at Caesar's Palace. Excellent condition.Gary Wells b. 1957 started racing Go-Karts at the age of 3 winning three state championships Arizona Nevada and Utah before retiring to begin a motorcycling career at age 10. He continued racing championship motocross and flat-track during off weeks after his inaugural jump at age 14. Perhaps Gary's maiden voyage into jumping could serve as evidence to the excitement professionalism and courage this young man would display throughout his career. This set the stage for a nationwide tour of forty-eight stops in thirty months including of the Houston Astrodome the Canadian National Exhibition and the Iowa State Fair to mention a few. Gary has been featured nationally on all three major networks. CBS Sports Spectacular ABC That's Incredible NBC Late Night with Tom Snyder Mike Douglas and Dick Clark Special etc.In 1980 Gary broke his own World Record in Melbourne Australia with a 176' 4" jump. In the time period between January 1979 to April of 1980 there were six attempts by six other jumpers four English two Australians at this distance and all were unsuccessful.After that jump the media deemed him "a legend": one hundred and ten World Record jumps and only one accident. This accident being at the infamous Caesar's Palace Fountains in Las Vegas September 15 1980. This jump was not as far as the one he had made just a couple of months prior but it was met with disaster; He missed the landing ramp and crashed into a concrete parking structure and suffered a ruptured aorta and fractures of the pelvis thigh and lower leg. Fighting the toughest challenge of his life Gary Wells completely recovered from the catastrophic crash which would have killed a lesser man. The Motorcyclist Extraordinaire like the mystical Phoenix Bird re-emerged from his ashes and made his inaugural comeback jump five months after the accident with a nationwide tour followed by a performance in Rio de Janeiro Brazil during the Formula One Grand Prix. Since those early days Gary had continued to tour throughout Latin America amazing a whole new set of fans. He died in 2020 in Arizona. N.P. unknown

V.P.: N.p. ca. 1895. Oblong folio 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. It contains 20 stiff leaves mounted to stubs and bears 80 original albumen photographs of various sizes but none are smaller than 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 and most are boudoir size. Original half brown leather over brown cloth with generic gilt cover lettering. Leather absent to top inch of spine and rubbed elsewhere corners worn to the boards. A little wobbly in the binding but a very nice album.The first thirteen photographs are by William Henry Jackson and measure 6 1/2 x 4 inches each. Manuscript notation on the first leaf read "Views on the road as you to go Silverton." the individual titles are; Los Pinos Valley from Toltec Canyon; Animas Canon D & RG RW; Elm Park Animas Canyon; The Needle Mts Animas Canon; Near Ironton; Silverton; Bakers Park; Cunningham Gulch Bakers Park; Bakers Park from Wardsville; Bakers Park and Suitan Mountain; Switchback at Red Mountain showin a locomotive with two men standing on the top' Turntable in Switchback Silverton Railway; Ironton with a manuscript caption reading "Village 18 miles from Silverton. The next little grouping is of Riverside California 2 large and 9 small photographs; some of the smaller ones with damage. Next is "Colorado Springs. The White House." A nice photo of Pasadena Affer this western section the remainder of the album deals with their trip to famous sites back east. Many are captioned. The last 6 are of South Carolina which is likely their. home. Three large shots of a fabulous old mansion called Upton Court in Camden S.C. Near the end is a picture captioned "215 Orange Street" and this is likely their home. Underneath it is a picture of their spaniel ""Flush' Taylor May 17 1893 will be 14 years old in August." The family name of the people/person who assembled the album was Taylor. N.p. hardcover

Festschrift Issued by the Harvard Mathematics Department to Honor Benefactor George Putnam.
Boston: Harvard University ca. 1945. One-off. Folio 11 x 14 inches. One leaf of printed text 11 leaves bearing 9 original but for one silver gelatin photographs of distinguished Harvard mathematicians. Full crushed red morocco covers with four gilt rules front cover with gilt initial G.P. mulberry endpapers all edges gilt. In the original felt-line and morocco-edge slipcase of gray cloth. A beautiful item.At first glance one is tempted to think that the University paid for this album on the death of Putnam but the lettering on the only text leaf and some dates of certain professors give doubt to that idea. The text leaf reads "To Our Friend and Benefactor through Many Years George Putman from the Mathematics Department at Harvard University as a Token of Respect and Appreciation." Putnam who famously married Amelia Earhart died in 1950. So it is likely it was given to him just prior to his death in acknowledgment of his financial contributions to the Department. Some of the mathematicians shown are: Oliver Dimon Kellogg; Edward Vermilye Huntington; William Fogg Osgood: Gabriel Marcus Green & Julian Lowell Coolidge the only person still alive in 1945. The first image is a reproduction of a Bachrach photograph of William Lowell Putnam II also the only individual not a mathematician; it is likely that he started the contributions to Harvard and George maintained them. Two original vintage silver-gelatin studio portraits ca 5-3/8" x 3-1/2"; printed to borders with embossed edges; printed for postal use on verso with divided backs for addressing. Slight crease to one corner but both images very well-preserved Near Fine. Embossed studio stamp in image lower right: "Lucerne / Studio / 1437 Fillmore Street / S.F. Cal." <br /> <br /> Also included are slightly larger proof versions of the same two images on thinner photographic paper each with abrasions at center of image with evidence of scrapbook adhesion to versos; Good only. <br /> <br /> The first image is of two young female sitters posing arms encircling each other's backs dressed in identical Pierrot costumes -- possibly attired for a costume ball. The second image is a solo portrait of one of the same two sitters. Undated; sitters unidentified but this studio appears to have been active in the period 1909-1911. An advertisement offering Lucerne Studio for sale appears in the February 1912 issue of Camera Craft a San Francisco photographic trade journal. An Excellent Album Detailing a Driving Trip in the Rockies in 1918.
Colorado: N.p. 1918. Original oblong quarto album 11 x 7 inches containing 88 corner-mounted photographs as well as a route map rules for driving the Pike's Peak Auto Highway two souvenir tickets for the highway and a few postcards and clippings. Photos are all mounted on the rectos with typed captions on the facing pages. Photo size ranges from 2.25" x 4" to 4.75" x 7.75" with 19 being the largest size. Six photos are nicely hand-colored. The front cover of the album is missing otherwise condition is very good. Ribbon-tied black roan with front cover absent. Not a single photo or caption has been lost to history and the album is very tidy.This album documents the Colorado travels of Mr. & Mrs. H.A. French and an unidentified female friend. Included are photos of Estes Park Cheyenne Canon the Garden of the Gods the Pike's Peak Auto Highway Rocky Mountain National Park Cripple Creek Royal Gorge Mt. Massive Mt. Elbert Berthoud Pass car camping lodges etc. The captions make this photo album. Most are declaratory but some are humorous or ironic. Driving at all in 1918 was an iffy proposition but driving in the Rockies at that time took real courage. Notice that a ticket was required just to be able to drive the road to Pike's Peak. One shot at Cripple Creek shows all of the passengers pushing the car. To do this kind of driving in the early 20th century mechanical skills were a must. There is a photograph of the photographer undoubtedly Mr. French standing on the side of the Pike's Peak road with his camera on a tripod. The various lodges and inns they stayed at were as follow the rest of the time they were car camping: Stanley Hotel Long's Peak Inn & the Buckhorn Lodge. The very last item in the album appears to be a magazine cut-out showing dozens of cars heading up a steep road and the caption reads "Like Flies Upon a String More Than 69000 Automobiles Climbed the Famous Lariat Trail on Lookout Mountain Last Season." In one photograph we can see Mr. French sitting on some rocks and wearing a fedora. That in combination with the stationery sticker The J. L. Hanson Co. Chicago makes for a good argument that the French's hailed from Chicago. N.p. unknown

Pre-Independence Professional Photograph Album of Daily Scenes in Curacao.
Curacao: Foto Fisher 1952. A lovely and very well maintained album of Curacao assembled 3 years before that country gained its independence. The only lettering is in Dutch of course and translated means "Offered by the Public Works Department on the occasion of your departure in Sept 1953." All 48 members of the Department have signed this statement. The album contains thirty-three professional gelatin silver prints of everyday life in the Dutch colony at that time. From lifting up one of the photographs we can learn that they were taken by Foto Fisher based in Curacao. 25 of the images are larger generally 9 x 7 inches and come one to a page and remaining 9 are a bit smaller and are two per page. Very nice onion skin interleaved. In the original woven cloth album 14 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches. No problems whatsoever a beautiful album.Fortunately the photographer did not dwell on the accomplishments of the Dutch administration but rather shows many common scenes of the native peoples going about their business. There are also pictures of beautiful beaches and house and oddly one large portrait of a little girl who appears to be Curacoan. The Dutch in the form of the West Indies Company had had a firm control of the island since 1637 when they fought off the Spanish would-be invassion. The favorable geographical position made it possible to trade with Europe Venezuela and other Caribbean islands. They also maintained contacts with Dutch colonies in North America including New Netherland. Peter Stuyvesant became acting governor in 1642 and held the position until 1644. The Curaçao population grew steadily partly due to the arrival of Sephardic Jews from former Dutch Brazil. The WIC also opened Curaçao for farming by new settlers from Europe. Even soldiers who had finished their time were welcome to stay. Naturally the goal was to produce enough food for the Curaçao population. In addition the WIC also wanted farmers to grow commercial crops. These included indigo cotton tobacco Turkish wheat or sorgo and sugar cane. The first plantations were built from around 1650. They include locations in Hato Savonet St. Barbara Santa Maria Groot Piscadera Groot and Klein Sint Joris and San Juan. Some of the plantations remained in possession of the WIC. This led to a massive influx of slaves.A fter the bankruptcy of the WIC in 1791 Curaçao became an actual Dutch colony. The Dutch were able to suppress the slave revolt of 1795. The uprising was led by Tula a slave who plays a central role in the history of Curaçao. Following the example of England 1834 and France 1848 the Dutch abolished slavery in 1863 bringing a change in the economy with the shift to wage labour. The Dutch state compensated the slave owners with 200 guilders per slave for the loss of their property. Until the beginning of the twentieth century Curaçao lived on trade agriculture and fishery. The economic tide turned in 1914 when large petroleum reserves were discovered in Venezuela. Shell immediately established an oil refinery on the island Isla Refinery near Asiento - where slaves were previously traded. This source proved to be a greeat book for the Allied Powers in the War.Curaçao was given an autonomous status similar to Aruba on October 10 2010. Unlike the Netherlands the island is not part of the territory of the European Union and for that reason Curaçao like Aruba and Sint Maarten does not have to comply with European law or introduce the euro as a legal tender. Due to the special relationship with the Netherlands as an overseas territory OCT Landen en gebieden overzee or LGA in Dutch the islands do qualify for European funds and EU wide cooperation agreements such as the Erasmus program. Furthermore the inhabitants of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands possess not only the Dutch nationality but also European citizenship. [Foto Fisher] hardcover

Three photographs bear annotations in manuscript pencil on the verso.<br /> <br /> The collection contains thirteen photographs of alert signs advertising Champion spark plugs seven advertising hotels the Biltmore in Dayton Hotel Sinton in Cincinnati Hotel Adelphia in Philadelphia Hotel Schenley in Pittsburgh Hotel Webster Hall in Detroit and two for Hotel Elizabeth Carteret in Elizabeth New Jersey three advertising radio stations WJW and WADC of Akron and WSPD of Toledo and three for various automobile and travel-related businesses.<br /> <br /> Ostensibly designed to warn drivers of forthcoming crossroads turns or junctions the roadside alert signs presented here were perhaps more effective for the prime advertising real estate of their plinths. The circular "alert" section containing text or symbols of approaching traffic changes and usually containing a center piece of reflective glass was mounted to a large freestanding base used for advertising automobile products radio stations local businesses and travel locations.<br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches. Portland: N.p. 1894. First edition. Oblong folio 13 x 10 inches. 22 thick leaves bearing 54 contact printed photographs. Sizes vary but the largest ones are 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches and the smallest 2 x 4 inches. All needless to say are of scenes around the famous port and logging town of Coos Bay Oregon. Publisher's string-tied nature-printed photograph wrappers with the from bearing 4 small fern leaves as well as the title. Most of rear wrapper absent. As there are no copies located by OCLC is is difficult to ascertain who was responsible for this rather deluxe view book for a small town in Oregon but it is definitely a professional publication. Small chips to a few tips a couple of leaves has loosened from one of the two hole. On the whole a very good copy of this scarce view book a view book considerably more intimate than most and in a beautiful part of the country.Some of the more interesting views are; 4 logging scenes on one sheet; a few of the Newport Coal Mines wo knew the Cape Arago lighthouse a few of retired Civil War veteran Major M. Tower's residence and backyard he was responsible for the U.S. Life Saving Station of which the major was in charge. N.p. unknown

Two Small Albums Housing 43 RPPCs of Sights Along the Columbia Gorge.
V.p.: N.p. ca. 1922. Two oblong octavo albums 8 x 5 1/2 inches bearing 64 real picture postcards corner mounted plus some commercial photographs of a smaller size but also captioned. String-tied stiff brown leatherette wrappers with gilt cover lettering reading oddly; Photographs. Souvenire of Butte Mont.Likely the compiler bought the albums in Montana and there are two RPPCs of mining in Montana: No. 8-Original Mine Butte Mont. & No. 9-West Stewart Mine Butte Mont. Also at the end of one album there are 6 hand-colored photographs by Seattle photographer Asahel Curtis that revolve around Montana; the nicest being a view of the Great Northern Depot in Butte. In reality these are both albums of views seen from the Lincoln Highway along the Columbia Gorge in Oregon. There are 42 images of this and the great majority of them were sold by Cross & Dimmmitt. Arthur B. Cross partnered with Edward L. Dimmitt to sell real photo post cards of the Columbia River Gorge Mt. Hood and Portland. Cross opened his Electric Studio in Portland in 1909. Dimmitt was born in 1881 in Columbia Missouri. In 1909 Dimmitt was first listed in the Portland City Directory as a waiter. In 1914 he began working for Cross at the Electric Studio. In 1916 they became partners and named their business Cross & Dimmitt. Cross & Dimmitt sold post cards off the running boards of their Model T at Crown Point. Archive of 62 vernacular photographs likely taken by an American GI stationed on a US base in postwar Germany with 57 of those photographs depicting a fascination with Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle cars that borders on obsession.<br /> <br /> At least three different Beetles are depicted in the collection including a myriad of artfully-shot close-up's of body damage interiors badges and cars undergoing repairs. <br /> <br /> Likely shot between 1962 and 1965 as evidenced by the style of license plate found on the cars which was in use for US military vehicles in Germany during that time. The photographer is seen in one photograph in front of a mirror that states "Portrait of a Soldier" one of a handful of non-VW related images that also include images of roadways an office lobby and an Audi.<br /> <br /> Full gallery of images available for viewing on request.<br /> <br /> All photos 5 x 7 inches Very Good plus or better condition. The atlas included consists of 100 loose stiff cards; each with an original photograph of the plant under discussion and botanical information printed in English German. and French The photographs are mounted into slits in the cars. The whole housed in the publisher's green cloth clamshell case with gilt lettering. The box is worn but sturdy. The photographs are sharp and clear. Very good and scarce.This is a photographically illustrated discussion of the flora of Trinidad and the West Indies. Excellent condition.The statement reads "254618S. A Short Cut to the Eiffel Tower Top: Drusilla Taggart talented and daredevil American dancer is shown here on her way up the great structure in Paris. When she reached the summit she evoluted on the very edge of the top story executing the fox trot on the narrow ledge of iron from which she looked down the sheer nearly a thousand feet that separated the dizzy pinnacle from the ground. Miss Taggart swayed and smiled blithely as she watched the little party of spectators gasp with excitement. 8/12/25." Taggart a tap dancer mainly famous due to this photograph broadcasted the dance she did at the Eiffel Tower; making hers the first radio broadcast of a dance. New York: Bruno of Hollywood ca. 1940. Original 8 x 10 1/4 publicity still of Jewish American dancer Belle Didjah a stage name in Polliwog ca. 1940. Contemporary pencil notes on the back Belle Didjah Spencer Arms Hotel. Concert at Little Theatre March 12. Signed in pen across Didjah's middle almost certainlt by Belle. Excellent condition with the photographers name in the image. Belle Didjah born around 1906 was a dancer of some note. According to one of her own biographies she was "reared in an environment of the strictest Jewish orthodox principles." Although she eventually signed on as a dancer at the N.Y. Metropolitan Opera House she soon felt the need to go out on her own as an American dancer in the school of Isadora Duncan. Despite that Belle didn't really stray far from her Jewish roots. In a dance she choreographed The Bar Mitzvah she played a male role. She bore a large portion of Anti-Semitism and by 1940 had largely given up her dreams of becoming a great American dancer and performed much less frequently. Instead she focused her attention on choreography for Yiddish theatre productions and presenting concerts of the benefit of Jewish causes such as the Jewish National Fund. One of only a handful of films to feature an all-Black cast made by a major Hollywood studio during the Golden Age becoming the highest grossing such film and remaining so until surpassed by "Carmen Jones" in 1954. <br /> <br /> 14 x 11 inches. They are on stiff gray mounts 12. 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches 318 x 387 mm. each with a red border and a printed caption in French. Original green cloth portfolio 15 1/2 X 12 3/4 inches with gilt cover lettering. Some aging and sunning to portfolio but the prints are excellent.With; Donnees Statistiques. Essen/Ruhr; Krupp Aktiengesellschaft 1909. First edition. Octavo 5 14 x 8 inches; 203 x 133 mm. 144 pp. with text in French. Profusely illustrated in halftones including reproductions of the photographs in the portfolio. Bound in matching green cloth with title in gilt on front cover. Aside from some spine sunning a very attractive copy.A photograph of the original wooden structure that housed Krupp's first factory surrounded by the huge development of factories furnaces and supplies that made up the Krupp Essen/Ruhr works opens the portfolio. Eight images show the smelting pouring storing and assembly of various large guns. A final photograph is an exterior view with numerous large cannons ready for shipment. In 1811 Friedrich Krupp opened a factory in his hometown of Essen in the Ruhr river valley providing high-quality cast steel for tools and dies. His son Alfred took over at Friedrich's death and in 1859 received an order from the Prussian government for the production of munitions to be used in the Franco-Prussian War. Leading up to World War I Krupp made millions constructing the armor plating that protected German battleships and fabricating the huge cannons it is best known for. This French edition of the portfolio and text proudly presents Krupp's capacity to build the largest strongest and best cannons of its day. Portfolio lightly rubbed but photographs and mounts crisp and clean. Near fine. Laid in are two extra photographs measuring 5 x 8.5 inches on stiff mounts measuring 7 x 9.75 inches each with printed text identifying the members of the Argentinean delegation and the Krupp employees at the Meppen Gun Testing Area December 1899. In the background of one image can be seen the massive cannon and the gun works.A striking array of military hardware is pictured including cannons and wagons for carrying ammunition spare parts and tools. Two photographs show a remarkable wagon with its observation deck extended to a height of twenty feet. In twelve photographs various tool boxes are opened to display the tight and orderly placement of saws hammers dies cordage brushes and other implements needed to keep these guns and wagons in top order. Stamps on verso of titlepages. <br/><br/><em>First printing of the main papers CONSTITUTING THE INVENTION OF MODERN CINEMATOGRAPHY -- from his invention of 1888 of the "Chronophotograph" followed the modern "Cinematograph" first described here in the offered papers of 1888.It started with his invention of the chronographic apparatus with stationary plates and chronographic disk schutter. the paper of August 7 1882 later in 1882 his description of the photographic gun and in the 1892 paper "Marey constructs according to the reversible principle of the chronophotograph an apparatus for the projection on a screen of series of pictures taken by the afore-mentioned apparatus and thus realizes the photographic synthesis of motion" Joseph Maria Eder "History of Photography" p.510.Marey 1830-1904 was a French physician and his inventions sprang from his investigations in the physiology of the motion of men and animals."In 1882 Marey often claimed to be the 'inventor of cinema' constructed a camera or "photographic gun" that could take multiple 12 photographs per second of moving animals or humans - called chronophotography or serial photography similar to Muybridge's work on taking multiple exposed images of running horses. The term shooting a film was possibly derived from Marey's invention. He was able to record multiple images of a subject's movement on the same camera plate rather than the individual images Muybridge had produced. Marey's chronophotographs multiple exposures on single glass plates and on strips of sensitized paper - celluloid film - that passed automatically through a camera of his own design were revolutionary. He was soon able to achieve a frame rate of 30 images. Further experimentation was conducted by French-born Louis Aime Augustin Le Prince in 1888. Le Prince used long rolls of paper covered with photographic emulsion for a camera that he devised and patented. Two short fragments survive of his early motion picture film one of which was titled Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge.The work of Muybridge Marey and Le Prince laid the groundwork for the development of motion picture cameras projectors and transparent celluloid film - hence the development of cinema. American inventor George Eastman who had first manufactured photographic dry plates in 1878 provided a more stable type of celluloid film with his concurrent developments in 1888 of sensitized paper roll photographic film instead of glass plates and a convenient "Kodak" small box camera a still camera that used the roll film. He improved upon the paper roll film with another invention in 1889 - perforated celluloid synthetic plastic material coated with gelatin roll-film with photographic emulsion." LEGRAY, GUSTAVE - THE INVENTION OF THE WAXED-PAPER PROCESS IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Clean and fine. <br/><br/><em>First printing of a landmark paper in photography introducing his invention of the waxed-paper process."Gustave Legray brought photograpy on paper to its culmination in the 1850s with the waxed-paper process. A struggling young artist. Legray abandoned painting for photography around 1848 and with the financial backing of the Comte de Briges opened a portrai studio on the top floor of the same house as the Bisson brothers in the Madelaine district. His reputation however was made not in the field of portraiture but as an architectural and landscape photographer. He also taught photography and "nearly all renowned photographers of the day have been his pupils". Legray devoted a good deal of time to experiments and wrote a number of manuals. His invention of the waxed-paper proces dates to before 25 Febr. 1851 but the manipulation was not published until the following December the paper offered. The wxed-paper process was far more than a modification of the calotype as can be seen from the substances used in oidizing paper - rice water sugar of milk iodide of potassium cyanide of potassium fluoride of potassium to which was later added white honey and the white of some egg. Sensitizing was done with an acid solution of nitrate of silver and development took place with gallic acid. The process took its name from the fact that the paper was waxed before iodizing instead of merely after exposure to facilitate printing." Helmut E. R. K. Gernsheim. </em> unknown
