He was born in London in 1910 of Swedish parents but has Huguenot ancestors. He worked on the Architects' Journal for some years and then started freelancing by canoeing across Sweden with his wife and a camera. In 1948 he explored the English canals and this resulted in a special issue of the Architectural Review and a book The Canals of England. His other books mostly illustrated with his own photographs are Britain Rebuilt Scandinavia Time on the Thames The Bridges of Britain Gunnar Asplund London's Riverside Photography and Architecture Swedish Cross-Cut: A Book on the Gota Canal The City of Westminster: Heart of London The London Dore Saw: A Victorian Evocation London 1851: The Year of the Great Exhibition The Nautical Style and as a companion to this volume the Penguin handbook Colour Photography. China's Food
New York: Friendly Press Inc. BOOK: Previous Owner Markings Inscription; Corners Spine Bumped; Light Shelf Rub to Boards; Spine Slightly Cocked; Light Moisture Damage Staining. DUST JACKET: Previous Owner Markings Price Clipped; Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. SYNOPSIS: China's Food is a lavish extraordinary photo essay. Photographer Reinhart Wolf journeyed for three months through the People's Republic of China to explore and discover how and why the foods eaten there are grown chosen bought prepared and served. From farm to market to kitchen to table China's food is entwined with history philosophy economics - the soul of Chinese society. Food is symbol and sustenance its meaning braided together with how it looks tastes and nourishes. In the foods of China all elements join. The line between food and medicine blurs: the prescription room of a Chinese pharmacy resembles a kitchen. A stand of bamboo yields stout poles for building light rods for carrying and tender shoots for tonight's dinner. In China food is more than just something to eat. It carries the myths and traditions of Imperial culture. The dragon symbol of good luck cavorts on ancient temples in inlaid ivory and gilt; the same dragon appears at any banquet exquisitely assembled from morsels of egg and vegetable. China's food undergoes whimsical elegant transformations: a whole fish is artfully carved and twisted into a gargantuan flower. Even China's basics wheat rice and dofu the bland bean curd bedrock diet protein are ingeniously boiled fried steamed baked carved twisted spiced filled flattened wrapped tied and dried into noodles buns breads sheets blocks strips and coils. The Chinese demand their food fresh preferably still alive. The noisy bustling markets are a chaos of cages and baskets of live fish chickens pigs ducks dogs snakes birds crabs weasels. Without the luxury of food taboos China has learned to eat anything. China's Food captures this spirit with a cascade of lush images highlighted by a witty informative text. Though not designed as a cookbook it holds selected recipes so any cook can sample the flavors of China at home. These run from the most basic for perfect plain rice to the sophisticated textures of Heng Yang Spicy Scallops. The varied pattern of culture life and mind that comes together in the foods of China is never hidden. Parts of it are visible everywhere. And all of it is here in China's Food. Reinhart Wolf has been one of Europe's leading photographers for the last thirty years. His books New York and Castles in Spain have both won medals from Art Directors Clubs in America and Europe. A gourmet cook Wolf has worked on food articles for major magazines and has photographed two cookbooks. Lionel Tiger is a noted anthropologist and author of five books among them The Imperial Animal with Robin Fox and Men in Groups. A self-confessed "obsessive" about food he has collaborated on several photo essays on the subject of cuisine and culture. Eileen Yin-Fei Lo was born in Canton China and came to the United States in 1959. An instructor at New York's China Institute she has published two highly regarded cookbooks: The Dim Sum Book and The Chinese Banquet Cookbook. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Friendly Press, Inc. Hardcover

EXCERPT: INTRODUCTION - COWES - Tiny town on the Isle of Wight in the Solent waters off the south coast of England. BEKEN - Four generations of chemists seafarers and photographers. Beken of Cowes. Names synonymous with grand yachts billowing clouds of sail with hard pressed lean ocean racers canvas skimming the waves and decks awash . . . Keith's son Kenneth joined the photographic business in 1970. Some of the equipment has changed. He uses Hassleblad cameras. The family now has a 21' Boston Whaler launch with twin motors. But he is no less expert on yachting and boats than his father. In the maelstrom of activity that characterizes modern yachting the photographer must be completely in the game and know exactly what is going to happen. The skill of the Bekens is well known among yachtsmen . . . First Edition 1st Printing. Paperback. Very Good. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. A Peacock Press/Bantam Book - Bantam Books, Inc. Paperback

Ramon Jose Luis; Olivares Rosa
Passes: The Art of the Bullfight Seduction Deception Illusion and Truth
New York New York U.S.A.: Rizzoli Intl Pubns 2001. First edition. Oblong 4to. 191 pp. Illustrated throughout in color. Translucent band covering boards as issued. New. "To transmute the threatening and dangerous existence of a beast into something as gossamer as a dancer's veil is the greatest marvel of bullfighting" according to Manuel Chaves Nogales. In certain cultures this ancient ritual illustrates multilayered relationships between intelligence and brute strength certainty and doubt man and nature reality and deception. In this elegant oversized album Ricardo Sanchezs swirling motion photographs reflect the ballet of maneuvers known as passes tracing the lines and forms of the bull and the bullfighter not in sharp frozen moments but in movement and energy. Rosa Olivares comments on Sanchez's photography as an art form and bullfight critic Jose Luis Ramon explains in detail how the passes are performed and what they mean in the bullringand how these performances are so deeply rooted in the culture that the terms of the fight pervade the language. . First Edition. Pictorial Boards. New/New. Oblong 4to. Rizzoli Intl Pubns Hardcover
