[Photography – Abolition – Reconstruction] Phillips, Wendell; Sonrel, Antoine
Carte-de-Visite Portrait of Wendell Phillips c. 1871-1874
Boston Massachusetts: Antoine Sonrel 121 Washington Street 1874. Albumen photograph on original mount with printed Sonrel studio backstamp. No other examples of this pose located in online institutional collections. Fine condition. A studio portrait of the abolitionist and reform leader Wendell Phillips 1811–1884 shown seated at a table holding a small bundle of papers or pamphlets. Phillips one of the most prominent antislavery orators in the United States continued to play an active role in national reform politics after the war advocating for Black civil rights during Reconstruction and supporting federal enforcement of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. Phillips argued that emancipation was incomplete without political equality pressing for Black suffrage land redistribution in the South and continued federal protection of freedpeople. During the late 1860s and 1870s he remained a visible public lecturer on Reconstruction policy and also aligned himself with the labor reform movement briefly serving as president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and later supporting the Greenback movement.<br /> <br /> The photograph was produced by Antoine Sonrel 1827–1912 a French-born artist and photographer who worked in Boston from the mid-1850s. Sonrel was originally trained as a lithographer and produced illustrated plates for American scientific and educational publications before establishing a photographic studio. From 1871–1874 according to local directories published during those years he operated at 121 Washington Street in Boston advertising portrait photography alongside lithographic and illustrative work. This example appears to represent an unrecorded studio pose of Phillips by Sonrel distinct from the better-known Brady and Warren studio portraits circulated during the same period. A particularly nice image of Phillips in his later years with fine contrast. Antoine Sonrel, 121 Washington Street unknown

[Western Americana – Photography] Haynes, Frank J
Portrait of an Affluent Man Fargo Dakota Territory 1879
Fargo Dakota Territory 1879. Cabinet card photograph measuring appx 4 x 5 ½ inches on larger mount. Very good plus. An early studio portrait by Frank Jay Haynes taken during his initial establishment in Fargo Dakota Territory shortly after his 1879 move from Moorhead. The mount—“Art Studio cor. 8th Ave. & Main St.â€â€”appears to represent Haynes’s first likely short-lived location in the city set just off the main commercial corridor before he relocated his business to the more prominent Front Street Main Avenue. The sitter an affluent-looking man in a fur overcoat holds a cane. In 1879 the affluent class of Fargo consisted primarily of railroad officials tied to the Northern Pacific Railway for which Haynes would later become the official photographer land agents and speculators capitalizing on townsite expansion grain merchants and elevator operators profiting from the wheat boom and a small professional class. Haynes was the first major photographer in the area and would have a prolific output; this image represents an example of his early work before he was established in the city. unknown

MOTORIZED PRODUCE WAGON IN CINCINNATI OHIO
An original photograph circa 1915 of the motorized delivery wagon for John Holderfield & Sons a wholesale fruit and vegetable merchant. Hand-painted signage on the wagon shows that Holderfield operated two locations: 226 E. Pearl Street and 132 Sycamore Street in Cincinnati Ohio. According to a newspaper report John W. Holderfield 1866-1923 of Cincinnati founded the business but when his sons entered military service during World War I he consolidated his firm with R.A. Miller & Company.<br/> <br/> The black and white image shows a man driving a motorized delivery truck that is loaded to bear with barrels. A logo is evident confirming that the truck is a Pierce. The first Pierce-Arrow truck was produced in January 1911. Pierce-Arrow's final attempt at the commercial market was in 1935 when they made 9- and 15-passenger sightseeing buses. The first motorized commercial truck was produced by Gottlieb Daimler in Germany in 1896. However it took more than a decade for businesses to transition from horse-drawn wagons and make the investment in motorized vehicles.<br/> <br/> The 13 ½" x 10" black and white photograph is printed on glossy stock and is linen backed with a short caption affixed to the verso which requests to return to Mrs. Janet Ball of Canoga Park California alongside "John William Holderfield" and the date 1915. Additionally the address "3857 Eastern Ave." is written in pencil on the verso. unknown

(PHOTOGRAPHY: JAPAN)
Japanese Photograph Album with Unusual Provenance.
Japan: N.p. ca. 1910. Oblong octavo 8 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches with a total of 25 stiff leaves mounted to stubs. Each leaf has a window on each side all bearing original photographs or early postcards. All windows have printed floral borders. There is total of 23 original albumen and silver gelatin photographs many hand-colored and 27 very early Japanese postcards again some with hand coloring. Contemporary padded burgundy morocco with gilt cover lettering floral endpapers. A few of the window frames with a tear rear joint of album starting but still strong. An unusual gathering of material. The majority of the photographs are of women and most of them are hand colored. The two most interesting postcards of battle scenes from the Russo-Japan war with captions in English and Japanese. There is also a rather rare photograph of Yoshiwara the famous prostitute section of Tokyo. The women in Yoshiwara are all behind bars as usual. There are a couple of books about Yoshiwara but precious few postcards. The seeming obsession with Japanese women is likely explained by the fact that this album was almost surely assembled by a sailor in the German Navy. The two most interesting photographs in the album are of German naval personnel riding horses in the countryside of Japan. These are rather confusing as Japan is justifiably famous for it's unwelcoming posture toward foreigners especially mere naval soldiers of no great distinction. But all becomes clear when we read the name of their ship on their cap: SMS Hansa. The Hansa served in the East Asia Squadron during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 along with SMS Hertha SMS Iltis and SMS Gefion bombarded the Taku Forts. Her sailors then took part in the successful storming of the forts. During the Russo-Japanese War SMS Hansa along with the protected cruiser SMS Furst Bismarck the gun boats SMS Tiger and SMS Luchs and the cruisers Hertha and Geier took part in the forcible internment of the Russian battleship Tsesarevich and three destroyers at Tsingtao in 1904. SMS Hansa was a protected cruiser of the Victoria Louise class launched in 1898. As a gesture of appreciation the Japanese government probably allowed a number of the sailors to travel the country. abaa-ny-2022 N.p. unknown

(AFRICA: PHOTOGRAPHY)
Photograph Album of the African Research Survey.
N.p.: N.p. ca. 1935-36. Large 13 x 10 1/2 inches album bearing 188 original photographs of place and people in Africa in the 1930s. The album is divided into two section. The first section has 56 original photographs measuring 6 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches. The second part has 132 photographs measuring 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches. Virtually all have captions in white. This count does not reflect the missing photographs i.e. captions without photographs; two in the front part and 1 in the back part. Contemporary album of mottled brown boards. Custom slipcase with printed paper cover label. The photographer who undertook this journey covered vast distances and the original photographs are just as disparate. Locales as exotic as Lome Togo Northern Ghana Mali Algeria Nigeria Dakar and Dahomey. Most show activities and people. Two show the Bidon 5 Weather Station in Algeria surely just put up. Another shows 6 scientists with the man in the middle holding two chimpanzees. It is likely that the album was compiled by medical/environmental researcher Dr. E. B. Worthington of the Freshwater Biological Association in England. In the rear is a manilla envelope addressed to him as well as a loose photograph bearing his copyright on the verso. "In 1930 Worthington married a trained geographer and talented pianist Stella Johnson with whom three years later he published a book on The Inland Waterways of Africa. From 1933 to 1937 he took part in the African Research Survey for which he was awarded the Mungo Park Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He was secretary to and first full-time director of the Freshwater Biological Association 1937–46. He returned to Africa in the late 1940s as science and development advisor. He was deputy scientific director for the Nature Conservancy 1957–65 and scientific director of the International Biological Programme IBP 1964–74.The conception of the African Survey emerged from a series of conferences held at Oxford University to coincide with the Rhodes Memorial Lectures. The African Survey's emphasis on science and its desire for colonial reform were the common threads that held the project together during its many transformations. The institute's redirection had as much to do with “watertight†compartments of knowledge as it did with institutional and personal politics. The creation of the Scientific Sub-Committee formalized what had already been a two-tiered structure in the African Survey's organization. Generally throughout its execution the African Survey's leadership were bound to their original objective of developing a “permanent scheme of research†that could add to the study and management of Africa's imperial problems. "A decade-long endeavor 1929-38 the African Research Survey was designed to examine the extent to which "modern" knowledge was being applied to African problems. It served as a main authority for consultation on the part of the British colonial policy architects; and gave an impetus to British development schemes until the era of decolonization." H. Tilley N.p. hardcover

The Sweet Flypaper of Life
New York: Simon and Schuster 1955. Very Good. New York: Simon and Schuster 1955. First Edition Wrapper Issue. 12mo 18cm.; publisher's photo-illustrated card wrappers; 98pp.; photographic illus. throughout. Light wear along edges with slightly heavier wear and soiling along spine; general rubbing; a few smudges and scuffs. Binding sound; pages unmarked; a Very Good copy. <br /> <br /> Despite the misleadingly poor print quality "The Sweet Flypaper of Life" has gained canonical status as one of the great photo book collaborations of the 20th century. In the early 1950s DeCarava was the first Black photographer awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship spending the year in his childhood home of Harlem capturing its inhabitants both in the private and public sphere.<br /> <br /> In 1954 he brought a portfolio of examples from this project to the more established poet Langston Hughes who would provide the accompanying text for this collaborative work. Langston's piece adopts the point of view of the fictitious Sister Mary Bradley an elderly Black grandmother of ten living in Harlem in the wake of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. Her stream-of-consciousness thoughts on her immediate surroundings married with DeCarava's photographs proved an instant commercial and critical success. <br /> <br /> In the earliest review from the "New York Times" Gilbert Millstein argued "It is probably hortatory to say so but the chances are it could accomplish a lot more about race relations than many pounds of committee reports." Orville Prescott's Christmas Eve eve review similarly extolled the publication concluding "I cannot recall any other book in which the two elements of pictures and words were so artfully mixed." Unsurprisingly the commercial success of this small work allowed DeCarava to quit his job for good and devote the rest of his career to photography much to our lasting benefit. <br /> <br /> Reference: Langston Hughes: The Contemporary Reviews 1997 pp. 466 & 472. Greg Wildrick [Vernacular photography] [Automobile]
Original vernacular photograph album documenting the vehicle ownership history of Greg Wildrick of Peru Indiana 1955-1966
Peru Indiana: N.p. 1967. Vintage stringbound vernacular photograph album documenting the vehicular obsessions of one Greg Wildrick of Peru Indiana who would ultimately kill four people in a motor vehicle accident and later die himself in the same manner while speeding. Approximately 150 black-and-white photographs and 50 color photographs with manuscript ink annotations captioning most of the images. <br /> <br /> Manuscript ink annotations on the front board provide the album's title: "#1 / Our new cars etc. / Family Too." Additional annotations on the inside rear board note: "The bullshit contained in this so called albumn sic belongs to Greg E. Wildrick / 4 Holiday Drive / Peru Indiana is where I live if you don't know me. Call 472-2550 / If you don't call me forget it!!! / Book Finished March 5 1967 at 4:45 A.M."<br /> <br /> The photographs in the album span roughly 1955 to 1966 compiled by Greg at the age of 19. In addition to many images of the family's muscle cars and trucks the album also contains quite a few shots of bicycles go-karts quarter midgets and speedboats often with family members posing happily nearby. Several images also capture vehicles in use.<br /> <br /> Patently obsessed with cars and speed from a young age Wildrick would go on to work as a used car salesman in nearby Kokomo Indiana throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Wildrick's fanaticism also evidently extended to his leisure hours as the Kokomo Tribune notes Wildrick's involvement in multiple speeding violations during the same period. <br /> <br /> One of the album's more striking photographs taken on December 19 1965 is a blurry color Polaroid of the speedometer of a 1966 Oldsmobile 442 going 110 miles per hour down US Highway 31. This same stretch of 31 would see Wildrick gravely injured and four others dead in a grisly two-car accident five years later in January of 1971. Sadly this would not be Wildrick's last serious accident as a similar collision on US Highway 35 would precipitate his own demise in 1986 at the age of 39.<br /> <br /> A fascinating and thorough album capturing a young man's coming-of-age in a car-centric family and more broadly allowing a personal glimpse into the golden age of the automobile in postwar America. <br /> <br /> 12.75 x 12.25 inches. Photographs ranging from Near Fine to Very Good plus with approximately 18 photographs lightly scuffed cracked toned and edgeworn. Album Very Good plus with light edgewear and scuffing on the boards. Mexican Agricultural Workers Photography
Mexican Agricultural Life Rural Labor and Family Portrait Photography Documenting Post Revolutionary Countryside 1920s to 1940s
1910. Photographers unknown. Rural Mexican agricultural photographs circa 1920s-1948. This group documents daily labor transport and domestic life among campesino communities in Mexico during the decades following the Mexican Revolution when land redistribution policies reshaped rural economies and agricultural production. The images record men women and children engaged in subsistence and small-scale farming activity including the movement of goods care of livestock and domestic craft production providing visual evidence of how rural populations sustained livelihoods within newly restructured landholding systems. The presence of wagons pack transport and adobe dwellings situates these scenes within regional agricultural practices that persisted alongside modernization efforts in early twentieth-century Mexico.<br /> <br /> Nine photographs including silver gelatin prints and real photo postcards measuring approximately 2.75 x 4.5 inches to 3.5 x 5.5 inches several with manuscript inscriptions on the verso. The images include multiple scenes of men riding wooden wagons pulled by cattle and equine animals; two postcards depict rancheros in wide-brimmed hats seated on wagons one drawn by a mule and another by a team of bulls. Two photographs show individuals carrying heavily loaded baskets and packs of agricultural goods along arid pathways one adjacent to a railroad line indicating proximity to transport infrastructure. A landscape postcard presents a young boy standing beside family cattle in front of an adobe and thatched dwelling with harvested crops stacked behind him. A dated 1948 portrait taken in Tijuana depicts a man and woman holding earthenware pottery and wearing woven straw footwear linking agricultural labor with artisanal production and local material culture.<br /> <br /> These photographs align with broader transformations in rural Mexico during the post-revolutionary period when land redistribution and agrarian reform restructured ownership while leaving everyday labor practices largely dependent on manual work animal power and localized exchange. Visual documentation of campesino life from this period provides primary evidence for the study of agricultural economies regional identity and material culture particularly in relation to transport methods housing forms and dress. The combination of portraiture and working scenes situates individuals within their economic environment offering insight into how rural communities organized labor and family life in the early twentieth century. Light wear minor edge toning and occasional surface marks; images remain sharp with strong contrast and legible inscriptions. Overall very good condition. unknown

19th Century Black Photography
African American Life After Emancipation Early Photographs of Black Men and Railroad Labor in the Reconstruction and Jim Crow Era 1870s-1890s
1870. Early photographs of African Americans produced during the decades following emancipation provide important visual documentation of Black life during the Reconstruction and early Jim Crow eras. Portrait photographs and vernacular images from the late nineteenth century capture African Americans navigating newly won freedoms while confronting the economic and social constraints that defined the post slavery United States. Such photographs often record moments of labor travel and self presentation reflecting both the aspirations and realities of African American life during a period of profound social transformation. This small photographic archive dating from the 1870s through the 1890s preserves rare images of African American men during the generation immediately following the end of slavery.<br /> <br /> Archive of four original photographs including two tintypes and one albumen print measuring approximately 2.25 x 3.25 inches to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. The most visually complex image an albumen photograph dating from the late 1890s depicts a Black man and a young boy standing on railroad tracks behind a caboose where four white men are also present. The African American man wears a hat and carries a large sack across his back while the boy holds a basket filled with produce suggesting a scene connected to travel commerce or railroad labor in the expanding transportation networks of the late nineteenth century. The presence of the caboose and railroad workers situates the photograph within the rapidly developing rail infrastructure that reshaped the American economy during the post Civil War period. The remaining photographs consist of tintype portraits of African American men dressed in the formal attire of the late nineteenth century including bowler hats vests and tailored suits. One sitter is photographed wearing a three piece suit and holding a cane while another poses beside a table while holding his hat in hand.<br /> <br /> Portrait photography played an important role in African American communities during the decades after emancipation as newly freed individuals asserted dignity respectability and personal identity through formal portraiture. At the same time vernacular photographs such as the railroad scene record the economic realities and labor environments in which many African Americans worked during the late nineteenth century. Together these photographs document African American presence within both public labor landscapes and private studio portraiture during a formative period in the history of Black life in the United States. Four original photographs including tintypes and an albumen print measuring approximately 2.25 x 3.25 inches to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. One photograph with clipped corners; otherwise images clear and well preserved. Overall condition very good. unknown
