Many of these miniatures were exhibited by Mr. Joseph, at the Art Treasures' Exhibitions; at Burlington House, in 1879; at Ryde, Isle of Wight, in 1881; and at Lewes, Sussex, in 1882. ‎The History and Description of Leeds Castle, Kent.‎

‎First edition, folio (380 x 270 mm), x, 210, [2], xxxvipp., title in red and black, 8 mounted albumen prints (145 x 200 mm) by John Cruttenden of Maidstone, images faded at edges, lithographic plan hand-coloured outline, double-page pedigree and double-page facsimile letter, fore-edge of frontispiece and title page neatly strengthened, neat repair to inner margin of leaf G3 marbled endpapers, attractively rebound in the style of a late eighteen-century panelled calf binding, gilt, with red and black morocco labels to spine. Leeds Castle was the country seat of Charles Wykeham Martin (1801-1870), an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in three periods between 1841 and 1870. Cruttenden had exhibited two of his images of Leeds Castle at the Photographic Society's 1861 Exhibition. Gernsheim, 458.‎

‎First edition, volume one [all published], 4to (260 x 190 mm), [6], 256pp., 10 plates (of which 6 are actual photographs), 3 illustrs., in the text, orig. red calf calf, marbled boards, a little rubbed. This rare Lincolnshire periodical ran to just this single volume and is illustrated with 6 tipped-in Woodbury photographs, two additional early photographs of the 'Lincoln Imp' pasted on to front-free endpaper. Corns, p. 8.‎

‎5 Parts in one, 8vo (240 x 155 mm), 234pp., separate printed title page to each part, 78 sepia carbon photo plates by James Craig Annan (each image has a pencil note of lot number), inner hinges a little shaken, orig. red cloth, lettered in gilt, a couple of unobtrusive ring stains on upper cover otherwise and very good copy. The complete 5 sales (2213 lots over seventeen days) of the works of arts from Hamilton Palace which produced the enormous sum of ?397,539 over seventeen days. The photographer who's images illustrate this work, was James Craig Annan (1864-1946), he continued the successful portrait practice of his father, Thomas Annan (1829-1887). Artistically he was concerned with creative, pictorial work, mostly using the photogravure process, which he had introduced into Britain.‎

‎4to (280 x 215 mm), [8], 64pp., plus one leaf of publishers' adverts, 28 mounted photographs (165 x 120 mm) of Nottingham street views, each with caption title in ink on lower margin, orig. green cloth, spine and upper cover decorated in gilt and black with a mounted photographic view of Nottingham Castle, re-cased, some minor fraying to head and foot of spine otherwise a very nice copy. Gernshiem describes a copy with 12 albumen prints and gives a date of 1875. In our copy page 64 notes that "While these sheets are passing through the press, an event of unusual interest has taken place in Nottingham. On Thursday, September 27th, 1877, the Foundation Stone of the new University College was laid." Inscribed on front free-endpaper "Mary Thorpe, with her brothers love and best wishes, January 20th 1882." Gernshiem, 601.‎

‎SIBTHORP (Rev. R. Raldo)‎

‎A Catalogue of Porcelain & Pottery, Oriental, European, & English, the Property of the Rev. R. Waldo Sibthorp, of Nottingham.‎

‎First and only edition, large 8vo (240 x 160 mm), 55, [1]pp., well illustrated with 60 mounted albumen prints on limp card, each depicting between 3 to 25 items of porcelain from the collection (corresponding catalogue number supplied in MS. to each item), the catalogue consists of 740 items with printed descriptions, continued from 741 to 771 in MS. some light spotting, cont. dark maroon cloth, gilt border to covers, spine lettered in gilt, slightly rubbed. Principally the collection of Richard Waldo Sibthorp (1792?1879), Church of England clergyman and Roman Catholic convert, but added to by various members of the Sibthorp family of Canwick Hall, Lincolnshire. On Richard's death the collection passed to his nephew Coningsby Charles Sibthorp (1846-1932) and later to be sold for charity in an anonymously at Christie's on 2nd March 1877. This copy bears the signature of Coningsby Charles Sibthorp at the head of the title page and the MS. additions appear to be in his hand. Gernsheim, 582; Extremely rare, Copac locates a single copy at the V&A; OCLC adds a further copy at the Metropolitan Museum New York.‎

With Twelve Splendid Explanatory Photographs, and Nearly Two Hundred Illustrations.‎

‎First edition, small 4to (220 x 165 mm), viii, [1], 10-234pp., 12 actual photographs laid-down of 5 plates, numerous illustrs., within the text, some light scattered spotting, mottling to endpapers, original publisher's bevelled green cloth, gilt vignette to upper cover, a very good copy. A rare and comprehensive guide to the science and method of portrait photography, illustrated with 12 original photographic examples of how to set up and mount the perfect portrait. It was described in an 1872 issue of The Photographic Times as "the most complete, elaborate, and comprehensive work on photography that has ever been published." Elbert Anderson was employed by the Kurtz's Studio, New York. "Beginning in the 1860s, vignetted heads and upper torsos became a popular style of portrait photographs known as the "Rembrandt style". Kurtz perfected a process using a series of reflectors to concentrate and bounce sunlight onto the subject's face. With the subject seated against a dark background, the result emphasized strong features and masked weaker ones."?Jezierski, Enterprising Images, p.69.‎

‎First edition, 4to (208 x 160 mm), [12], 52pp., with 16 mounted albumen prints by the Sheffield photographer Theophilus Smith and text by John Holland, including a frontispiece and a circular photograph on the half-title that is possibly photolithographic, all with original guards scattered foxing as usual, the deluxe edition (probably issued for civic presentation) in full brown/red morocco, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, with elaborate blind stamped and gilt blocking, a very nice copy. ‎First edition, small 4to (240 x 175 mm), xliv, [2], 333, [1]pp., 5 mounted photographs called for (frontispiece, title vignette, and 3 plates), ground plan of Lydiate Hall, some occasional light foxing, original publishers green cloth, bevelled boards, black decoration, spine lettered in gilt. A scarce photographically illustrated work, Lydiate Hall was a black-and-white half-timbered house which was accompanied by a private chapel. It was a known Catholic house during the time of Elizabeth I of England. It now stands ruined and was given a Grade II listing in 1968.‎
