Buenos Aires: n.p. 1940. First edition. Patterned maroon leather album two holes with string ties and tassels gilt titles and illustrations on front board. A very good copy with wear to spine ends and corners of boards writing on front pastedown and on a few leaves edgeworn first leaf. Unpaged 20 leaves. Illus. with 19 mounted silver-gelatin photographs with spider-web tissue guards 29 b/w photo-reproductions on 7 plates and two small portraits. Obl. 4to. 12 x 8.5 inches. Over forty original signatures and inscriptions some a paragraph long on the front pastedown and verso of first leaf plus one or two later on all presumably members of the regiment. Includes a short history of the Regiment. A group photo of 28 officers has a separate bound-in key identifying them by name and rank. Created on May 29 1810 and immediately sent as part of the relief expedition to the interior provinces Regimiento no. 3 de Infanteria "General Belgrano" is the most prestigious brigade in the Argentinean army. This 1940 album produced on the 140th anniversary of the regiment was a crucial time for the military in Argentina with the country officially neutral but much influenced by the German military. The Regiment was led by General Ambrosio Vago first photograph a supporter of the Allies who had refused to take part in the coup of 1930 though at this time was urging a new coup along with a number of Axis-leaning officers to oust President Ramón Castillo with the goal of holding non-fraudulent elections. But it would be Peron who would lead the coup in 1943 with Vago though ostensibly a Peronist not participating and exiled to Bahia Blanca. A rare photographic record of the Argentinean military before Peron's ascendancy. We could locate no copies of this nor any similar items in OCLC or other Latin American or European library databases. n.p. hardcover books

CATALINA ISLAND TRAVEL PHOTO ALBUM CIRCA 1890
Very good. An album containing thirty 4" x 4" black and white photographs of Catalina Island at the turn of the century. Four of the photographs are laid in; the rest are secured in the album with photo corners built into the pages. There are no markings in the album or on the photographs with the exception of a stamp noting that the photographs were printed by Merick Reynolds Co. on Broadway in Los Angeles. The album contains a variety of images of men women and children in Victorian dress and a few coastal shots. Notably the album includes a photograph of two women climbing up the steep wooden ladder of Sugarloaf Rock in Avalon Harbor. Remarkably they are in Victorian dress with long skirts. Sugarloaf Rock was graded and blasted away to make way for a hotel where ultimately the Catalina Casino was built in 1919. The album also includes a photograph of the S.S. Hermosa at the long pier in Avalon Harbor. The Hermosa according to an article in the 2007 Catalina Islander newspaper was launched in 1888 by the Wilmington Transportation Company and was the largest and most elegant vessel of its kind on the West Coast. It was a wooden ship 141 feet in length and capable of carrying 150 passengers. The well-known Hungarian Orchestra usually accompanied passengers on the almost three-hour crossing. She was decommission in 1902 stripped of her luxuries and burned in Avalon Bay during a 4th of July celebration. The album is bound in gray heavy paper wraps. Boston: Joseph Knight 1893. Book. Very good condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Oblong quarto 4to. According to the September "Publisher's Weekly" this book was issued late in 1893 by Joseph Knight of Boston. It was done with the cooperation of Ernest Edwards' New York Photo-Gravure Company. Essentially an oblong quarto view book it features ten superb Japan-tissue photogravures by Edwards' New York concern. Printed on Japan paper. Bound in cloth with silver stamp and fancy paper side. Quarto 9 ½ x 11 ½. It includes two images by Davis & Sanford "A Figure Study and A Young Artist" two images by H.P. Robinson "A Trespass Notice and He Never Told His Love" and one each by Geo. H. Taber Jr. "Away-Back" D. P. Watts "A Corn Roast" Mrs. N. Gray Bartlett "Bric-a-brac" Mrs. M.B. Greenwood "On Fishing Bent" W.C. Walker "In The Woods" and P. Thiery "Feeding the Poultry". There is a short gift inscription on the front endpaper: Christmas 1893. There is minor soiling and foxing to most of the pages. Other than the title page the volume which retailed for $2.00 features no letterpress of any kind. The delicate tissue plates are each tack-glued at the corners and tipped-in centered on each of the ten leaves. These delicate and finely-printed examples of hand-pulled photogravures are representative of the type of artistic work being done in the United States in the 1890's. Full leather with four raised spine bands ruled and lettered in gilt. About Very Good with leather rubbed along edges chipped at foot exposed tips with small corner tear to bottom front corner hinges a little taxed by heavy pages but holding a few tissue-guards torn and creased. An oversize volume featuring many beautiful Pacific Northwest photographs by Asahel Curtis brother of Edward Curtis. OCLC currently notes ten institutional copies of the two editions of this work stating this particular edition de luxe has "108 photogravures-- 83 credited to Asahel Curtis 4 credited to Walter Averett 1 each credited to Brent Gifford Grant Humes and A.H. Barnes and 10 uncredited. The photogravures are printed in various hues from sepia to grey and many have tints of blue and grey." Scarce in this format. W.D. Album with approxmately 280 photographs; mounted with photo-corners only not glued down; many with identifiers on back dating the photograph and naming the participants; many photographs of social activities state and company dinners tennis matches other sporting activities where apparently these people went to be entertained in Cairo and Alexandria Egypt; a mixing of Middle-Eastern and Western-style events with some military and political leaders socially melding with the engineers and workers on this project; with views of the Egyptian countryside as well as of the plant; with a book in Arabic evidently promoting the new facility with black and white photographs; also including about 30-40 photographs of family outings evidently in Europe Italy and other places where family and friends may have had leave from building the project; various formats mostly snapshot size however there are many 3" x 5" and larger even a couple of 7"x 9" size; all contained in a faux leather album with a very worn spine and coming disbound; photographs clear well-taken and very well preserved recording a little-known aspect of Western business and industrial development in the Middle East with the participation of wives and families while a project was being completed and during the Nasser revolutionary era; We note that some of the equipment possibly for power generation bears the Babcock & Wilcox name and also equipment from Kohorn who were textile equipment manufacturers; these names are visible on the apparatus pictured in the accompanying brochure.
