An Edwardian photograph of the staff of a butcher's shop possibly in Woodside in the Adelaide Hills
The five men four in butcher's striped aprons and one woman are standing on the unsealed road in front of the shop next to a horse-drawn delivery cart sign-written with the name 'A. Mount'. The vintage gelatin silver photograph image size 107 × 152 mm is on the original blind-stamped mount of 'McNeills 184 Rundle St Adelaide' 207 × 246 mm. Pencilled on the verso is '1907 A. Mount Woodside'; although we have been unable to verify these details most places in the Adelaide Hills in the Edwardian era probably did look like this. However what is decidedly most rare about this scene is that one of the butchers is of Indian or Afghan descent. unknown

An original gelatin silver photograph 110 × 90 mm mounted on stiff card 220 × 170 mm inscribed in white ink on the mount beneath the photograph 'With Christmas Greetings from Dr and Mrs Ramsay Smith' stamped on the rear 'Photo. by Dr. W. Ramsay Smith' and captioned in his hand 'At Port Vila - New Hebrides'. Ramsay Smith describes 'picture-making' at Port Vila in detail in his 1924 book 'In Southern Seas' and this image contains all the elements referred to: one's wife 'for comparison and relief to the various objects in the picture' the harbour as background to the wooded heights the ship in the distance . The corners of the mount are slightly rounded and both the image and the mount are a little foxed; overall it is an attractive item with more than the usual amount of background information. <p>William Ramsay Smith 1859-1937 physician naturalist anthropologist civil servant soldier - and controversy was often never far away see the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. His entry there states that 'Believing that tribal Aborigines were dying out he recorded their folklore in "Myths and Legends of the Australian Aborigines"' London 1930. Subsequent to this being published Dr Philip Jones has also recorded in the ADB that from the early 1920s David Unaipon 1872-1967 the Aboriginal preacher author and inventor 'studied Aboriginal mythology and compiled his versions of legends . Gathered before 1930 the legends are in his surviving manuscript in the Mitchell Library: they were commissioned and published by William Ramsay Smith without acknowledgment'. unknown

B&W Illustrations; World War I Scrapbook 13" x10" approx with 48 pages from an instructor at the Second Aviation Instruction Center at Tours France 1918. <P> The scrapbook was the property of and photographed by James FFred Chappell who is best known as one of the early photographers at the Lick Observatory and for whom the Chappell Crater on the Moon is named. <P> The scrapbook includes 48 pages of various sized photographs taken by Chappell starting with photographs of shipboard activities on the transport from the US to Tours France candid photos of France and the French rural folk on their travel from the coast to Tours and then to the compound of 2nd AIC Second Aviation Instruction Center which was founded by the French at the Tours Aerodrome and then given over for the use of the United States as a place for instructors in aerial observation and aerial gunnery to teach students. <P> James F. Chappell became an instructor in Aerial Observation -- and ironically because the airplanes were crashing so often and had so many injuries and fatalities Chappell and other instructors were forbidden from flying into combat to keep from having excessive losses in the instructor corps. <P> The latter half of the scrapbook includes many photographs of different styles of airplanes both whole and in pieces the ambulance crew fire brigade the camera guns and aerial photographs and sundry accoutrement dealing with aerial photography gunnery or observation. There are several rank advancement tickets small souvenirs and occasional newspaper clippings associated with the school. <P>Chappell graduated as one of the first classmen of the U. S. Army Aerial Photography class held at Cornell University in Ithaca NY. <P> In all 278 photographs plus other ephemera regarding Chappell's tour of duty starting from his transport in the US to the fields of Tours France. <P> This scrapbook holds an amazing amount of visual information regarding the early days of the Army Air Corps which became the United States Air Force in 1947. . Gallup N.M.: P. Clinton Bortell 1913. About very good. Panoramic photograph approximately 10 x 48.25 inches. Minor dust soiling and patches of light staining. Two short closed tears at lower edge not affecting image. An attractive panoramic image of the town of Tucumcari in eastern New Mexico taken by professional photographer Pearl Clinton Bortell in 1913. Bortell operated a studio in Gallup on the other side of the state during the 1910s and was mostly known for his photographic postcards of regional Native Americans their villages and activities. This view looks southeast with a large nest of railroad lines in the foreground and Tucumcari Mountain in the background with the scattered buildings and unpaved roads of the small town occupying the midrange. Tucumcari was established as a Rock Island Railroad construction camp known as "Ragtown" in 1901 and only became a permanent settlement with its current moniker in 1908. The town quickly became an important railroad junction and transfer point for Rock Island Railroad and Southern Pacific trains to Los Angeles from which it derived all of its modest prosperity. B&W photogaphs Extensive photographic coverage including reproduction of numerous full contact sheets of a legendary recording session that took place in Hollywood on June 17 1952 and featured the legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Bird Parker who died just a few years later. Esther Bubley had been a successful freelance photographer since the mid-1940s often working on assignment for such magazines as Life and Ladies Home Journal; this particular opportunity however was not a formal engagement but rather came about through her acquaintance with art director David Stone Martin. Martin who had been hired by producer Norman Granz to create the cover art for the albums that resulted from this session there were two had a chance meeting with Bubley who was visiting L.A. at her hotel's swimming pool and asked her to come along and photograph the session with nothing more in mind than for her to capture images that he might then be able to use as the basis for his artwork. Because of the informality of the arrangement Bubley's photos were apparently never published or used commercially they remained "undiscovered" in the record company's archives for the next forty years or so. The text of the book FYI is entirely in French and certainly contains much more information about how and when the photos were unearthed and prepared for publication than was contained in the small bit I translated. The book was never published in an English-language edition one result being that all copies for sale online at the present time are from European or British sellers -- except this one of course; govern yourself accordingly.
